If you want an authentic carpets and kilims from Turkey, I recommend you go to Motif Collection at Sultanahmet. (It’s very close to Ayasofia.) Don’t worry if you know very little about tribal rugs. The owner Hamit has a vast knowledge about hand-woven carpets and kilims. He is willing to share his knowledge. He explained in detail about each carpet... More

Motif Collection is the most reliable carpet shop in Istanbul. The owner Hamit Balkir is an expert of hand-woven carpets and kilims. My wife and I were goting to other bigger carpet shops and just entered Motif Collection partly for fun. But, after we began to talk with Hamit, we gradually got interested in what he talked about tribal old... More

Istanbul was a city that I had longed for. I also wanted to buy some antique Anatolian kilims in good quality in Turkey. So, I asked my friend who had been to Turkey for many times when I bought air tickets to Turkey. She recommended me Motif Collection. She told me that she has been a customer of the shop... More

Last summer I was in Istanbul for a few days before boarding a cruise. On a previous trip to Turkey more than 20 years ago I purchased a handmade woolen rug from a "school" and I still love and cherish that carpet. On this trip I was hoping to purchase a silk rug. We went to a few stores but... More

On a recent trip to Istanbul, I decided rather last minute to buy a Turkisk carpet. However there is a prevailing sentiment that everyone in the markets and stores is out to scam you. So I spent a few hours in my room reading online how to buy a Turkish carpet and what to look for. I was thrilled by... More

A visit to this small shop turned out a most pleasurable and stress-free experience. I'd highly recommend it to any visitor. The store only specializes in Turkish handmade pieces, selling some at fairly low prices, some at medium. There are many kilims as well. Hamit is a collector and a dedicated man with wonderful manners; he enthusiastically shares his knowledge... More

We recently got back from a trip to Istanbul in which, like many others, we purchased our very first Turkish carpet. Before going out to the shops and bazaars we read the many reviews and advice on the internet about how to purchase an authentic carpet. We tried out a couple of other shops first, then we went to the... More

I highly recommend Motif Collection to people who want to buy tribal carpets or kilims. The owner Hamit Balkir is professional. His knowledge of tribal hand-woven rugs is so wide and profound. The shop isn't so big, but the stuff is large. They're in stock on the attic of the shop and their warehouse in other place near to the... More

We were so fascinated by the exterior of Motif Collection. There were a few beautiful tribal kilims and carpets hanging on the wall at the opposite of the shop. The door and the wall was wooden and painted with lovely colors. When we stopped to take pictures of them, the owner Hamit Balkir came out and called us. He invited... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
