I am very fortunate to have spent time in the Sultanahmet District of Istanbul. There are MANY interesting historic sites to visit as well as wonderful restaurants and shops. The people we met were consistently friendly, warm and welcoming, and we had many interesting and meaningful conversations with locals-not something that occurs everywhere...

Whilst roaming in Sultanahmet Square you'll find many agents approaching you to buy boat trips on Bosphorus, about 20-40 dollar per person, where you'll be taken around the part of channel between Asian and European part of Turkey. Be ready with your cameras! It's a 40 -60 min trip where you get to take photos of several historic places and... More

Everywhere you look in the historic Centre there is some thing new to see, a new memory to make and a new picture for the album. The people are friendly and knowledgeable, they are also proud of their history and the restoration work that is being done on these remarkable buildings. Well worth a couple of days wandering and exploring... More

There is so much history in Istanbul that it's a bit overwhelming. Start with traditional sites like Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, and Hagia Sophia, and expand as you have time. Or, visit again to truly enjoy!

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
