It turns out that horse racing is quite popular in Turkmenistan. The horse racing season ends before it gets too hot, and we saw the last race of the calendar at the end of May. No cost to enter and few tourists to be seen....More

If there's no races on you should be able to talk your way into the stables to have a good look at the famous Turkmen Akhalteke horses. To get to the stables enter the Hippodrome and go to the far right of the stadium. The...More

I think this should be #1 attraction in Ashgabat, and a great place to see the Turkmenistan horse. You can also pay a fee to ride it.

Unless you are absolutely wild about horses there is no reason for you to go to the hippodrome. The very special Turkmen horses look and act like every other horse on earth as far as I can tell.

Like all the new buildings in Ashgabat the Hippodrome is no exception. It is large, impressive and I would have loved to see it in use.

Nice place. Many locals gambling there. But many people were sent to fill it up. Clean, well maintained place. Good way to see Ahal Teke horses.

The day for this is Sunday during racing season, which is at least in the springtime. Thousands of people gather to watch Akhal-Teke horses competing. Most people seem to be there because they have been told to come here, but others are very enthusiastic about...More
