This lake in Colombo is a really nice spot, both for the temple on the water and for the lovely ride on swan boats. You can rent one for 30 minuts and pedal on the water among many smily local people. The atmosphere is great and you will get a nice view of the city buildings surrounding the lake.

This is a lake in the city centre in front of the Colombo city centre shopping complex. There is a beautiful Buddhist temple in the middle. The lighting is beautiful in the night.

Beira Lake is one of the most prominent landmarks in Colombo. It's located right at the center of the city and a perfect place that combines beauty and relaxation within the city limits. It is said that the lake used to be much bigger over a century ago, however as of present day, it has been scaled down to about 150 acres as a result of the rapid commercialization. According to the records, the lake has been created by Portuguese to protect their base during 1500s and then evolved to be a landmark during the British ruling and on. As of late, it became famous for a number of recreational activities, such as rowing and yachting. In conclusion, it could be said as a decent place for en evening walk or to relax within the city limits.

What a shame that the city can’t sort out the water. This lake should be cleaned to become a place of beauty in the middle of the city. Somewhere that local people could come and enjoy in their spare time.
We walked all the way round and the paths have trip hazards all over the place, they need repairing desperately. The island in the middle of the lake houses a temple which we did not visit also there is a temple which again only viewed from the pathway.
Tried to find out why the lake is green but couldn’t get a definitive answer from anyone. Worst of all at certain points around the lake the smell which I assumed was sewage was disgusting.

We stopped off at the lake between the temples and took a walk out to the island, which seems to be popular for both young love and tortoises, before having a ride on the swan boats. Nice relaxing break between temples.

The Beira Lake is mainly in and around three roads namely D.R wijewardena Mw, Vauxall Street and T.B Jaya Mw and is in Colombo 2. It finally enters the sea near the old parliament. Its water is green colour due to the algae present which gives an attractive look that goes with the surrounding trees on its banks. It is a cooling place which is made by the trees around it. Be watchful as the temperature rises a little during the afternoons as Colombo is warm and humid. It is very beautiful with the lighting in the night which glitters on water making a splendid sight.
It is a place to do a walk on its periphery with friends and also do a chat or spend time with family members. Chairs are found in many places on the periphery of the lake and you could sit and admire the beauty. The full walking on its periphery takes about 30 minutes. In certain places, you find beautifying structures like statues of Prominent Persons, Roller display, and special artistic Street Lamps and artistic boundary chain with vertical structures etc.
There is a Buddhist temple as centre of the attraction on the lake, which is a sub temple of Gangaraymaya, located 100 meters away, called as the Seema Malakaya; floating on water. It has many Buddha statues and most of them of peaceful posture types as well as some statues of some Hidu deities.
There is a small bridge leading to the small middle of the lake small island and shading is given by a large tree. You can walk to it by the small bridge and spend some time there.
.The tress and some of them of blooming type give shade and add to the beauty of the periphery walk area. Most places are covered by lawns neatly maintained. payed path is seen round the periphery of the lake with certain area paved with locking type concrete stones. There is a pier spotted to give people to get a feeling on Beira lake water atmosphere. There are parking areas in most places around the periphery. Nelum kuluna is seen from here.
Pelicans, crows and some other birds can be spotted. Swan Shaped Pedi-lows and Catamarans are offer for hire at the rate of LKR 150. Sri Lanka army runs a restaurant at a corner of the Beira Lake.

I was a sole traveler and was clicking picture which even the locals do. But as the staff got to know that i am not a local he forced me to pay entrance fees. I said it its not written anywhere but he threatened me to throw me and my phone in the lake. He was standing in front of me not allowing me to go and when i said i will call the police he said i will not let you go until you pay the fees. Since i was a girl and a sole tourist i had no option but to pay him that money and escape from the place. It was very sad that temples loot tourist at Sri Lanka by forcing them and threatening them.
I wanted to put some donation in the box before leaving but this experience just showed the way such sacred places are looting from tourist and this act of extortion from places like temples is not expected at all !!!!

Beira lake had a Buddhist temple inside the lake.
There are entry fees for entering the temple.
And it has a boating service inside the which was not operational due to some technical issues on the third week of November.
We have a bridge which connects the island located on the middle of the lake the bridge is little broken.
Island is surrounded by trees with a nice breeze across good way to escape from the humidity of the city.
