Our guide was incredibly proud to show us this park and on first impressions, it did indeed look very pleasant - well manicured, peaceful and clean. However, our trip came to an abrupt end when we casually went led to the elephants, being kept in a little wooded glade in the park. Granted they were in the shade, and admittedly they appeared to have a mountain of food provided for them BUT they were both SHACKLED by one leg!!! I appreciate that this may be a cultural thing, but my animal loving conscience will rest better knowing that I told my guide I was leaving immediately! Regardless of their intended purpose, or the fact that according to the guide they are released at 6pm each evening (yeah right!), elephants are not in their natural habitat - and therefore can’t be truly happy - when they are expected to stand still all day in the centre of the city!!!! I wouldn’t recommend or go back to this place, regardless of how pretty the park is.

Entry Free

Centrally located this park is suitable for stroll in morning or evening. Walking tracks and benches for resting are available in the park. The entry is adorned by a golden statue of Lord Buddha.

Nothing unique, you may decide to visit this park if visiting any nearby area.

The park is free to enter and the main entrance is opposite the new parliament building. Here you will find the big golden Buddha statue surrounded by palms and trees. The setting is peaceful and pleasant. Walking through the park is made easy with numerous pathways to follow. Towards the back of the park is an outdoor workout space and a few horses which can be photographed. There are no restroom or restaurant facilities available, so plan accordingly!

Fantastic area for chilling, playing, walking...
Possibility for children to rent bikes and a nice play area that also has swings for children in wheelchairs.
Really large area to wander around, a clear favourite with the locals

This is an ideal place to relax your free time. When you enter the park you can see the image of lord Buddha and the image will make your inner peace.
Even at the hot midday you never feel the sun under the shady trees of the park.

We took a walk through the park on a hot humid day, and had a drink at the restaurant in the centre of the park. There is a play area for kids, exercise equipment, and a dedicated bike lane.

The Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) is a public park located in Colombo, next to the National Museum in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest and largest park of the Port of Colombo. Situated in front of the colonial-style Town Hall building, the park is named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu. The park was built during the British rule of Sri Lanka, and was originally named "Victoria Park" after Queen Victoria. The park features include a huge Buddha statue and a series of water fountains. It also includes a mini zoo, a children's play area and a BAC Jet Provost.[1]

The Viharamahadevi Park is the only large-scale public park in Colombo, and is maintained by the Colombo Municipal Council. Located at its western end is the Cenotaph War Memorial, Colombo and the Colombo Public Library. The Vihara Maha Devi Park Open Air Stadium is a venue for concerts and public events.

I was in Colombo for 3 days. I stayed at a hostel along Vauxhall Street at Slave Island and on a late afternoon I decided to walk my way to Gangaramaya Temple. From the temple, I walked across a busy road and coincidentally bumped into this green park.

The park was located opposite the Municipal Town Hall. On my way, I visited the Town Hall and was lucky to be given a free map of Colombo city. I roamed around the park and found the environment calm and serene. There was a children playground, a restaurant, a magnificent Buddhist statue and few sculptures near the front entrance. It was also called Victoria Park in her early days.

Compared to the Botanical Garden in Singapore, this park is not very big but it is the largest park in Colombo city. Heavy traffic jammed the roads and emitted irritating pollutants and the weather was intensely hot when I visit Colombo. I was glad to see this green oasis right in the middle of this bustling city. While there is nothing much to appreciate in the park other than the statues and children playgrounds, the park provides a short respite for travelers in a calm and serene setting.

One side of the park faces the public library and the National Museum while at another corner was the street gallery exhibiting artwork. I was impressed with the colorful and bold art pieces on display.

Further down from the park is the Independence Square. But I missed it because my legs were too tired to walk.

It is an ordinarily park and is free. The Buddha statue is unique but the children play ground and the park itself are just ordinary.

Our tuk tuk driver brought us to the park and it seems that we were introduced to a 'head gardener' who interestingly knew the driver but oddily didn't wear the typical gardeners' attire, as others did.

And so we were walked around and shown great species of trees and landscaping. Don't miss the train tracks....it's discontinued now.....but hey, it gives you a glimpse of how it once was.

There are no Tree Preservation Orders, given that fact some of the trees are hundreds of years old. You will see native trees, Mahogany, cloves.....it really is a great place for the locals to sit and relax in a very tranquil setting, which is effectively is in the heart of the city. It was the local childrens' last day at school and so it was just lovely to watch them playing the way we used to.....a trip down memory lane.

Tour over and the 'head gardener' asked for a tip. We gave him a tip so he could go on his way but then he demanded 5,000 Rupees......yes 5,000 Rupees. He didn't ask once, nor twice but countless times to my husband, then me and then both of us. In fact he got so close to me, I could smell alcohol.....My husband told him to leave us alone; that the tip was sufficient but 5,000 was a joke.

Then coming out of the park, my husband met a guy with a bag slung over his shoulder - it was a cobra that he took out and said 'nice snake' until it bit at him and he put it away. Great park but expect the unexpected!
