On arrival when coming down the escalator into baggage claim feel free to ignore the porters asking for your baggage claim checks. We used one of these guys and gave a reasonable tip only to be grumbled at with ingratitude. Avoid the duty free shops entirely. Although I found some JW Black at a reasonable price due to a promotion , everything else is grossly overpriced compared to any other airport in Asia. Perfume and cologne are easily TWICE as expensive here. And they don’t take the local currency.
The “R” gates (bus gates ) are awful. Our 1:15 AM flight left from R1 and the whole scene was just chaotic. Agents trying to shout announcements over a continuously playing Buddhist incantations on the loudspeaker, crowded , hot , miserable. And it doesn’t help to see an entire concourse of “normal” gates completely empty.

This is a review for Colombo Airport Transfers, a professional pre-bookable transfer service which we recently used on a holiday to Sri Lanka. (Note many of the reviews below appear to be for the airport or other related services, but this specifically refers to the company Colombo Airport Transfers).
Service was excellent throughout with good pre-trip communication. I was given the Whatsapp number for the local manager and our driver was awaiting us at the airport with a friendly smile. I also booked the return from the hotel to the airport whilst in Sri Lanka having determined the price charged represents good value.
Driver was courteous and safe. Highly recommended.

Serendib Lounge at the Bandaranaike Airport at Colombo is a special place for transit passengers. This is the lounge for business class passengers of Sri Lankan, the flagship airline of Sri Lanka.
Serendib is famous for unparalleled hospitality and customer service. From the moment you enter the place until you leave to your destination, you enjoy the best of Sri Lankan hospitality, at its best.
The Lounge is ergonomically designed with separate silent sleep area, rest rooms, showers, bar and restaurant. While the bar offers a variety of beverages, the dining area boasts mostly Sri Lankan cuisine worth a trial. You will enjoy most of the dishes.
The Lounge also has an Ayurvedic spa where you are offered 20 minutes foot massage, neck massage or face massage, for relaxation. Only the smokers will be disappointed as there is no smokers’ corner in the Lounge.
Though there are no departure announcements, the young Sri Lankan team ensures that no one misses their flights accidentally.
Overall, something good and special.

Went through Bandaranaike Airport twice recently and found it one of the better airports to be in. It was very efficient (even with increased security checks) and friendly and has a super range of shops and eating places. The gift shops in particular are fantastic - most don't take local currency though so keep dollars ready or use your plastic. The large duty free has a huge range of souvenirs at good prices.
It's strange to arrive and see so many fridges and washing machines on sale but I believe that is due to locals who have worked abroad getting big electrical discounts on their return. A weird sight though!

The van we booked was great and on time. The driver was very patient as it took over an hour at the airport to get some SIM cards. He was also a very good and we felt very safe with the way he was driving. Thanks a lot to Ayubowan Tours for a well organized transfer.

Used this company for inbound pickup on our arrival - went relatively smoothly, the driver was waiting but tried to get us to pay for the highway toll when it was in the agreed price. Booked and PREPAID the return service (as was requested) and the driver was a complete no-show. Wasted 20 mins on the hotel concierge phone being lied to by Natalie who said the driver was there, was in reception, but then "surprise" she finally said she couldn't get hold of him as he wasn't answering his phone. Was forced to use hotel car at higher rates to get us to the airport in time as company finally admitted driver was a no-show. Got a refund which was something. Would HIGHLY recommend fellow travellers never use this unreliable and untruthful company in the future - we certainly would not. Very stressful and disappointing experience.

Booked transfer to Ahungalla 4 months in advance. Paid £82. Nobody there, no contact number and website closed down.

We used this company because of some positive reviews. However something must have changed. We arrived at Colombo airport, with no delays and after 30 minutes of waiting and an attempt to call them, which said number not in service we gave up and booked another taxi, from a different company from the airport. We have since attempted to contact them via email and not yet received a response.
NB it is simple to get a taxi from the airport. As you come through customs all of the kiosks to your right provide a reliable and much cheaper, but good service.

We arrived late at night so we used this company to get a prepaid taxi from the airport to Coral Sands at Hikkadua. Paid 8000 SLR all inclusive. The man at the counter, Pasanmal gave his number and said he can arrange tours and airport transfer back.
I called a day before leaving Colombo and arranged for a transfer from the same hotel to the airport for the same price. On the day of, I called up the man, he said the driver on the way, kept saying the same thing. The driver was over FORTY MINUTES LATE so we just found another driver that happened to be in front of our hotel and went by him. We arrived just in time. Airport was a zoo, total chaos, had to go through two security checks before even checking in. Couldn't even tell where the correct counter was to check in for my flight. Advice to leave extra extra early!

Started off well with good communication, wanted copy of passports which was odd and wanted payment before we’d arrived. A big no in my book,
So we used the pay on arrival option and they stated all booked and quoted us.
Arrived in Colombo tired and drained to find the company a no show. Very glad I didn’t give them my money and they were uncontactable when we tried to call. There is PLENTY of reasonable taxi service desks at the arrivals at Colombo airport. And we got a taxi at a cheaper rate than this terrible company.

Hi, I stayed an hour north of the city so not sure. My advice would be if your staying at a hotel pre book with them. The cost of living & taxis and very cheap so its not likely to be more than 10 USD, Thanks Chris

hi good day, i am travelling to srilanka in Feb 2019. my flight arrival time is 01.40 early morning. then i have to go get the train 5 am. once i arrived i will get my luggage around 2.30 am. my question is is any place to sit or layover 2 hours at the Colombo airport? i don't want to go stay at the railway station with my wife and 2 years baby. will anyone able to assist me please? thank you guys.

I was abl3 to use my Bank Vic card without any issues - I also had no issues using my Virgin Velocity card on my way home. Both cards were accepted at ATMs and retail outlets (and I had the same ease of use throughout Sri Lanka). Enjoy your stay in this beautiful country.

There is no company name from the bus I took. They most are independent. Looking for a specific bus or company might cause you long waiting times.
Just go with the flow and grab what's available and agree on price UPFRONT and negotiate for the right price
