In a beautiful French Colonial villa surrounded by a rambly garden with an intersting veteran car in it, you will find Carol Cassidy amid her beautiful silks. Lao textiles, speaking generally, are truly gorgeous and opulent and to be found throughout the country in markets and specialist shops and galleries. They are all lovely and highly priced. Lao Textiles, the business, provides superlative quality and a marvellous variety. There is a large range available, from large wall hangings and throws in very traditional patterns, through to the most lustrous and beautiful squarves and shawls in a variety of sizes, textures and weaves. They're all expensive. But if you've seen the labourious processes involved in producing these pieces, you will understand why. The weaving work room is on site and you can visit it and see the women working. Or you can just peep in through the window to the rear of the showroom.
In the end I didn't buy silks but I did find some of those handwoven vine totes, which are made by local people and are very strong. I did buy one of those and avoided the high market prices. I liked the fact that I could be assured that they wouldn't be stocking ones of inferior quality and certainly, mine does heavy duty at each vege market visit and seems to be taking the strain. You need cash to buy these, whereas there are card facilities for other items.
Just a couple of things to note; the showroom has a split day and closes for quite a long lunch hour starting at 12 midday, I think it was. So do check the opening times, in order to save you a disappointment. And the second thing is that you need to ring the buzzer at the front door to be let in. The staff are charming and will welcome you warmly.

If you are at all interested in the culture and crafts of Lao, then Lao Textile is a must see.
Carol Cassidy’s factory produces high quality textiles in both modern and traditional designs. The factory is located in a lovely French colonial villa. It is a fascinating treat to see all stages of the process from washing and drying the silks to, weaving the fabrics and then, of course, the beautiful finished products. We were mesmerized watching these skilled workers create such beautiful fabrics.
We were fortunate enough to meet Ms. Cassidy. And, it was a pleasure to hear her talk about not only the weaving and design processes, but the country as a whole.
The visit to Lao Textiles was one of the highlights of our time in Vientiane.

If you have any interest in textiles, silk, weaving or hand made goods you must go to Carol Cassidy's Lao Textiles in Vientiane. It was one of the great highlights of our 2 week trip to Cambodia and Laos. We were very fortunate because Carol was there and gave us a tour. She is so passionate about her work and what she has done here. She loves to share her enthusiasm and knowledge. The studio/atelier/showroom is located in a beautiful old French Colonial house and is set up more as a gallery and work studio than as a shop. You can see the weavers working, the dyed silk drying and the finished wall hangings, scarves and pillows etc. Carol explained in detail how they weave true silk ikat. She has created such beautiful detailed silk designs that it truly is a gallery. I highly recommend going to see this fantastic Gallery. If you are lucky Carol will be there.

In 2008, I visited Southeast Asia when I was 11 years old. Carol Cassidy is my aunt and well known owner of Lao Textiles. Everyone in my family had been to visit her and had always said what an experience it was to be there. I was always eager to travel and was so excited to visit a new and unfamiliar place. Carol's business blew me away and I jumped at the opportunity to do something fun there. The first few days I spent wandering around, secretly stealing the banana bread from the fridge and marveling at the beauty of the silk storage room. I would spend hours looking at each and every bundle of vibrant and perfect silk. Before I left for home I wanted something special to bring with. I sat down at a loom and wove my very own purple and blue scarf. At the end of each day, all of Carol's workers would stand beside me to watch me work. The attention was gratifying and made me feel talented. I wore that scarf everywhere I went and showed everyone I met. I'm 14 now and I will always remember my aunt's business as unique and a part of my childhood.

Carol Cassidy Lao Textile in Ventiane Is the place to go for the most gorgeous, softest hand woven silks. There are a range of textiles for interiors and the woven silk scarves make great lightweight gifts for both men and women. On the main floor you can watch the silk weavers work. Upstairs is a gallery area with rare and exquisite Lao textiles. The gallery staff are quite textile savvy and speak excellent English.

We visited the Carol Cassidy's Lao Textiles in February 2016. It was the best thing we did in Vientiane. She was at the house and gave us a tour that was packed with terrific information about weaving in general and Laotian weaving in particular. I felt that I really learned a lot about both topics! The quality of the silk weavings in her store is unparalleled. The pieces are gorgeous and unbelievably well priced given the high quality of the designs and the weaving. You must go and you must spend at least an hour there to fully appreciate the textiles.

After visiting Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, one of the things I remember most was visiting Lao Textiles in Vientiane. We saw the weavers making the beautiful silk outside and then were able to go inside and buy it. It's not that often that you can see the craftspeople making the products you can buy. It was such a treat. We bought some scarves for gifts and got a wonderful wall hanging for the living room. All in all, a great experience!

This is the place to come to get hand woven traditional Lao textiles. You can see the work going on and talk to the staff - who have a great knowledge of their craft and are passionate about it.
We spent over and hour here each time we visited (first time to look, second time to choose a piece). This is not the tourist stuff you see in the markets, mass produced in China or Thailand, with the pattern dyed onto it. It is fine silk, with each line individually woven into the pattern. Each piece is a work of art and for this reason it is not cheap. But it certainly is worth purchasing a piece and worth supporting the effort to keep this high level of artisan work alive.

I have visited Lao Textiles many times over the past 20 years. Wonderful to see the same happy staff in the same beautiful house with garden in central Vientiane. Each visit is amazing. New designs, new colors. Always fresh. Learn about Lao weaving, Lao design, Lao silk.

This is a unique place where you can find high quality textiles. Also on the back you can check how they make them. We spent long time trying to find our unique piece for home. A lot of choices and gorgeous designs.
