Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The bus is very convenient, costing only 20 som. You can get on and off at any stop. The 2GIS app is very helpful; you must install it. Google Translate is essential. Get an Oi SIM card with unlimited internet. Do not go to Osh Bazaar if you're traveling alone. If you know Russian, you won't have any issues. The city is clean and neat. The Yandex app is also useful for transportation. Be sure to clarify your order when eating out. Avoid encouraging taxi drivers.

Bishkek is vibrant, live and hustling city. Old Russian buildings are sights to see. In evening and night, streets are full of people enjoying with family/friends. Do visit Beautiful parks and open art exhibition. Try fermented wheat/barley drinks commonly sold on streets.

I had no idea what to expect of Bishkek. I read a few travel guides/blogs before entrusting myself to Turkish Airlines (who were better than I've been led to believe) and headed into the unknown. I arrived on Victory Day, and it seemed most of Bishkek's population was in the city centre. My first impression was one of well-mannered chaos, and it was bordering on overwhelming. Too stressed to deal with Taxis etc.. I followed Chuy Avenue back to my hotel (Futuro - check them out on TripAdvisor - superb). 45 mins later, I arrived, having witnessed none of the mildly concerning things I'd read about the city, and feeling much happier. Many people either gave a nod of acknowledgement, or even a "hello". Trust me, I looked/look like a tourist.. I relaxed, and decided to trust my instincts, and headed back out again to see what Bishkek had to offer.

In short, it had the !^$/ing lot. Ala-Too Square is the type of impressive place you'd expect in what was a highly valued outpost of the Soviet Union, and the Russo-Soviet theme is evident throughout the city. The parks and shady green boulevards are a real asset, and a great spot to escape the heat and city fumes, and grab a tea, bite to eat, or in the case of Panfilov park, experience a Russian - style amusement park. A hunt around Bishkek's shops will find all the brands you probably know, there are some supermarkets that will feel instantly familiar to anyone from "The West", and there are small "magazin" for snacks, tobacco products, and water everywhere. And I mean everywhere. Even the tiniest place I've seen in Kyrgyzstan has somewhere where you can buy enough to keep you going. The roads are frankly terrifying, not just due to their dubious condition, but more that the locals can make 5 lanes of traffic on a 2 lane road. Trust your driver; he will be an expert!

The food has been excellent - the Kyrgyz are proud of their meat products, and rightly so. Bishkek also has the usual fast - food brands, without the exception of the 2 big US burger companies. The street food has been particularly good - Shwarma and "Hamburger" (often Mutton/Lamb) is worth recommending.

Transport is cheap, Taxis are everywhere, but they don't know all places - grab a free map from somewhere, mark where you're staying, and show the driver if necessary.

I could waffle on for ages, but the best thing about Bishkek is without a doubt it's people. Not once have I felt unsafe, and looking obviously different from the locals, nearly all I have met have given a greeting, enquired where I'm from, and extended a welcome; often hoping I'm enjoying their city/country. I did. I think you will too.

Bishkek is a great place to explore the city life of Kyrgyzstan. It's fun to pop into a cafe and have a coffee or a few beers and there is a lot going on after 10:00 pm. If you are in Bishkek I would make sure to see Osh bazaar, Ala too Square, and the countless parks in the city!

Bishkek is probably the cheapest city I have ever visited.
Osh bazaar sells virtually everything with most colourful displays.
The main square had superb illumination. Busses rattle and smoke but at just 9p the fares are so inexpensive.

On the face of it Bishkek doesn't have a lot to offer, built on a grid system and relatively young. There are no old historical places, castles or cathedrals to admire. The infrastucture and many of the buildings are badly in need of repair. It is dusty and, like all cities, noisey. And yet...and yet.... there is something about it that appeals and it appeals to many others not just to me. There is a fascinating jumble of cultural influences....Far Eastern, Central Asian, Russian, European, and American. Despite a population of about a million it has a small town atmosphere. It is also surrounded by easily reachable and beautiful mountains. Ah -but to be honest, I don't really know why I like it but, I guess, like anywhere, but more so in Bishkek it's the people that make the city....not the buildings!

Loved this city and it's people who have been through so much. The White House typifies much of this. It is where the current president lives. The people here are gentle and kind, and makes this a must-see destination for Central Asia. Do be aware of pickpockets. But still, it is a quiet, friendly country with lots to see.
