This imperial tomb is located a bit outside of Hue so it will take a bit of effort to get there. We took our rented bikes from downtown Hue and had no issue getting here. Others can take taxis or any other form of transport. I assume tour guides come here too but we were on our own. This is the tomb of one of the last emperors - an eccentric who was only on the throne for about 9 years if I recall. But his tomb is utterly breathtaking. You walk up a large number of steps with dragon railings (which is pretty common) but with glass or stone eyes (not common). You arrive at a mezzanine level lined with stone statues of courtesans and horses and even elephants. They are reminiscent of the terra cotta warriors in China. But the actual tomb building interior is the highlight. It's porcelain tiles and gold lief are just stunning. It was truly the most impressive space I've seen in Vietnam and ranks at the top of my list worldwide!! I know that the number of imperial tombs and temples in Hue is overwhelming. If you only do one - do this one!

This was a pleasant stop on our tour of Vietnam. The Imperial Tomb Of Dong Khanh. There are a good few steps to climb. It is very grey looking at the front and waking around. But when you get inside it's colours are beautiful. We were told no photos, but saw people taking some. When we were there in March, there were only six of us walking about.. The inside has walls made of bottle glass painstakenly glued on. Well worth a visit.

This was our second tomb visit on our private tour of historical Hue. Lot’s of steps to climb but well worth the effort as you are rewarded with spectacular views from every terrace. The sights inside the tomb, all the gold and splendour, are quite magnificent, very different from the other two tombs. No gardens as such, unlike the other tombs, but everything here is worth spending time over.

Photographs you may see before your visit do not prepare you for just how impressive this place is.
It really is a gem of a heritage site and definitely worth a visit

Do not miss this Imperial Tomb. Lots of steps but well worth the effort. Looks so bleak, dark and grey from the outside. Amazing statues in the courtyard and great views of the surrounding countryside. Inside is a fabulous decorated tomb, the ceiling is worth the visit on its own. Tomb and surrounding building covered in beautiful mosaics. Would have liked to have stayed longer and learnt more.

Amazing site with lots of stairs but the art at the top was worth it. Built as a tribute to himself, the tomb was amazing. Not to be missed.

Our tour included a lengthy stop at this amazing historical site. Many steps to climb but the rewards are great. Outside and inside this is a marvel behold. Well worth the time spent to get there, I highly recommend spending at least an hour exploring everything.

My family visited this location on a rainy day, but I say it was worth the drizzle. The Imperial rule over Vietnam was not something I had any strong knowledge of, but what I can tell from this is that Dong Khanh was really full of himself. The benefit to that is our ability to appreciate the artistry of this ego monument. The entire mausoleum is only 100 years old, but our guide gave us a humorous insight into the efforts put into trying to make it looker older and more venerable. The interior murals are gorgeous and the actual tomb area is best described, in my opinion, as a colorful fantasy done in marble and ceramics.

The stairs seem to come up a lot in folks' reviews, so I feel I should address that. If you are disabled or elderly or have walking issues - yes, this location will be a challenge for you. However, if you do not fall into those categories, the stairs are not a challenge. It's only like 100 stairs and there are multiple landings in between with things to visit that split it up. My 3 year olds conquered the stairs no problem, if that helps for context.

I particularly enjoyed the statues of different animals and people on the first landing and we had fun taking some humorous pictures with them.

There are clean bathrooms at the location and a little snack shop. Considering that I've heard this place can be packed, rainy days might be a good choice!
