When I’m asking my local guide, he said An Đồng Market is much more cheaper than Ben Thanh Market. We hired a grab with 150k taxi fare, quite far. But it is worth to pay as the souvenir here is cheaper. I spent 1900k here. If I bought in other places, it costed at least 2500k. Highly recommended.

We were disappointed with Ben Thanh market - the goods for sale seemed very "same same" and touristy. It was so hot, with narrow walkways, we didn't last long. So doing some research we decided to get a taxi to China town to give this market a go and I'm glad we did! Despite reports online, there is airconditioning being put in the market (up to level 2) which makes a huge difference. The sellers are pretty relaxed and don't hassle you, which I like. I thought the goods for sale were more "genuine" like I saw when I visited Vietnam 10 years ago. We brought colourful bamboo placemats, lovely bamboo salad servers, embroidered ladies purses/clutches, bookmarks etc. We had a lovely lady seller and we were happy with our purchases. There are the usual shoes, clothing etc on the ground floor, and if you sew, lots of material to buy. There are food stalls downstairs but as we were getting on a flight the next day, decided not to chance it. I just bought some nuts - and was done out of some change, the first time this had happened in our 2 week travels in Vietnam (except for HCMH airport taxi drivers who do try to bung on extra charges - just pay the large number on the meter!).

it is a traditional market in district 5, i first visited here in 2017, that time i bought many stuffs, so when i revisited HCM from late Nov to early Dec in 2023, i came here again. there are many stalls here, selling souvenirs, food, drinks, clothes, shoes, snacks, hats, coffee and tea…i bought a lot of coconut biscuits, lotus seeds, cashew, durian cakes here. the price is ok, the owner only gave me small discount when i bought many. anyway, the price is not that expensive if compared to buying in supermarket, actually quite the same, so it is ok.

As a group of 3 westerners we decided to google different places to shop and this was 1 of our options. We jumped into a grab taxi and went there. When we arrived no one was friendly. We looked around and no one would talk to us. We were very confused as we've always found people so friendly and eager to talk. We asked about buying things and all we got was 'no sell one' we didn't understand. So in the end we felt very uncomfortable and decided to leave. Upon leaving I thought... no I'm going to google translate to a security guard why we were treated that way and he informed us that, that market is for wholesale... no sell one, as in they sell in multiples of 10 or more. This place is not for tourists. It all made sense after that.

This appears to be more of a wholesale market specialising in fabric and clothes where the lots are small and the aisles are really narrow (like Ben Thanh market) and blocked by the shopkeepers sitting in the aisles as they have no where else to sit. While stock may be plenty however due to lack of space only very few items can be displayed and with the squeeziness one do not really get to see that much. However if you show some interest or ask, shopkeepers are happy to get more to show you. It is also quite stuffy inside the market but we thought not as bad as Ben Thanh. The difference between An Dong market and Ben Thanh is that there are not that many tourists (actually none that I saw when Iwas there) and hence prices are not inflated like in Ben Thanh where you haggle to get it down. As a matter of fact most prices are rather fixed unless you buy more. On the highest floor you will find clothing and wood craft. The wood craft cum souvenir shops are quite interesting, there are some higher quality wood items there like very nicely carved incense burners, animals in all sizes, beautiful trays, tea sets etc. There are also the usual chopsticks sets, coasters, chopsticks rest etc. I bought some buffalo bone chopstick rests at Ben Thanh Market and they were asking 60 dong each. I haggled it down to 40 dong each and I had to buy 6 and hey, a lady was selling at An Dong Market for 15 dong each (if I get 10) ... no bargaining needed. I later realised that An Dong is really in the Chinatown district so hence the shopkeepers can converse in Mandarin and Cantonese if you prefer those languages.
There is a food court at the lowest floor but it was rather hot when I was there so I didn't try the food. There are also quite a few jewellery / gold shops in and around the market and you can change currency there. They don't advertise so just walk in and ask. The rates were pretty good.
Taxi fare from Ben Thanh to An Dong is approximately 70 dong one way.

Minutes ago we were just at the An Dong Plaza (do refer to my earlier review of this place here), which is just a short walk from here, and we came by here for a visit.
Well, a huge difference between the two. The former is an air-conditioned and modern complex while the latter, more of an old and run down building. But having said that, we quite enjoyed our visit here as it has more to offer.
Covering several storeys, the building is structure very similar to Binh Tay Market (Chinatown), where kitchen and household items and food stalls are located at the basement; jewelry, shoes and bag stalls on the first storey and the rest are mainly clothing stalls from second storey onwards. There are several walking staircases around but you do not wish to walk, you can take the escalator at the back of the building (instead of the main entrance).
Well, like the other markets, stalls are located close to one another along the narrow corridor that separated the two rows of stalls and walking through them is a big challenge as it is very squeezy and sometimes will be blocked by other customers or even the stallholders who sit on stool around. But its quite interesting and fun to see and experience it. But it is quite warm here considering the hot and sunny weather out there with no a/c and poor ventilation, be prepared to sweat and do bring along bottles of water or toy fan to keep yourself cool!
Well, the prices here are surely cheaper than those from An Dong Plaza as they are mainly doing local business than to tourists (in fact, we only saw a handful of foreigners in our almost 2 hours here). I am comparing a "me too" or products of a similar quality and/or brand and most stalls allow some form of bargaining. People here are more friendly than the counterparts in An Dong Plaza too and they can speak good English and even Mandarin and Japanese.
As mentioned earlier, you can also take a break or grab some food/drinks at the basement as there are several food stalls and a wet market here.
Just outside the market are a number of makeshift stalls, selling bags, vegetables, fruits and flowers etc. On the side of the road, there are also food stalls.
We ended buying quite a number of items here, mainly polo and t shirts and bags and was a good bargain!

Ho Chi Minh City is amazing, we flew direct from Singapore which is like coming form the 'Stepford Wives' to the 'Hive'. After checking out Co Ben Than we went to An Dong market. Most of the cloths were too small for a couple of well built Kiwi's but it was worth a look. We purchased a water buffalo horn and some agarwood from a very nice shop on one of the upper floors. You will get lots of hawkers outside, it went a bit like this. Mister, Mister Sun glasses Mister. Mister, Mister new wallet Mister. Mister, Mister, light to set your new wallet on fire Mister. We had to laugh as the hawker got out a lighter and showed us how fire proof the wallet was. Hawkers carry boards with things on them in this area, manly sun glasses wallets and lighters. There is a great stone carving outside the market and the Plaza is close too. We walked for miles around this areas and saw some amazing sites. Check out the street photos.

If you have been to Ben Thanh Market, you will find a striking resemblance between these two markets other than the fact that Ben Thanh Market is much more crowded (this market was empty on a weekday afternoon) and Ben Thanh has many stalls spread out on street level but this market has a few levels of stalls. This is more "local" as compared to Ben Thanh and about 20-30 minutes from city centre depending on the traffic (can be pretty jammed after lunch hour at about 2-3pm!). I heard that the prices here are slightly lower but if you happen to be in the city centre, Ben Thanh will satisfy!

Come here if you want to score a good deals. I made a mistake to go to Den Thanh market before I discovered this place. The "Before-Negotiation" pricing here is lower than "After-Negotiation" price at Den Thanh (and I would usually negotiate 50 - 60% of the initial price). They sell food on the 1st level, clothing on 2nd and 3rd, and souvenirs on the top level of the market. Not too many people speak English so keep that in mind.

4 floors of shopping for ladies clothing. Good quality and prices are wide. From 200 dong to the over price 1 million dong! Just keep everything to 400 dong and below. We do find prices are higher as the floor goes up . It is a crazy way to shop but u do find great buy. Mainly Asian sizes.

Hi there.. How long is the journey to take a taxi from District 1 to An Dong Market & taxi would cost approximately how much??
Written 6 April 2017
For my experience, it took about 20~25mins, not that far except that the traffic jam on the roads can cause some slow down or delay. My taxi fare cost about US $4~$5.
Dont worry, taxi in Vietnam is cheap but make sure you take only the Vinasun (White) or Mah Linh (Green) as these are two more reliable and credible taxi companies.
Do have a nice trip!

Hey hello all!
As i'm going to Ho Chin Minh City and staying at Saigon, An Dong Market is one place I've marked out to go during my trip.
May I know if it offers a variety of male fashion clothing? And also, what can I expect to go there if I aim to go there to shop.
Written 9 November 2016
First of all, note that there is a An Dong Market and An Dong Plaza and they are in close proximity.
An Dong Market, has a basement level that sells dried food stuffs, pastries and the upper floor do sell some textile products. Don't expect high fashion or anything that is contemporary. Price wise is cheap, but as in all Vietnamese shops, bargaining is essential. There are some unique shops too, like those selling local craft.
It is an open multi storey building, so there is no air - conditioning, but it was cool, when I was there in June 16 at about noon. The building is set back from the main road and so, taxi are plentiful. There is a car park at the front of the building and a couple of stalls selling food that looks delicious as well as a fruit seller.
As a personal opinion, don't expect too much and there are better places for male fashion, like the two outlets of Saigon Square or places like Diamond Plaza.
I am sure, you will enjoy Ho Chi Minh city as I do.

Hello,
Does An Dong Market and Plaza, Cholon, Binh Tay Market, Ben Thanh Market open at night? Thanks
Written 14 July 2015
Ben Thanh Market is opened at night, but it is very overpriced so you should negotiate down to about 25% - 40% of the initial price. An Dong Market and Plaza is much cheaper but it is definitely close at night; I do not know the other two places. Hope this helps
