About
This central market is the symbol and soul of Saigon, with over 1,500 booths trading wholesale and retail items ranging from food and apparel to fabric and cosmetics. There are four main gates and 12 entrances—with the main entrance located near the big clock tower. Here, you can spot interesting souvenir picks like embroidered wallets, lacquerware and silk scarves.
If you’re a coffee lover, locals would recommend homegrown brands like Trung Nguyen, Metrang, Wakeup and Mr. Viet Coffee. When hungry, treat yourself to a comforting bowl of pho, a dragon fruit smoothie and Hue cake for dessert.

- Aparna D3 contributionsBen Thanh market shoppingIf you are looking for souvenirs from vietnam..this is the place. You get great collection of shoes, bags some local stuff, accessories, etc. Also if u r looking for good coffee..you can get beans as well as powder..before buying u can also taste the same.. we bought beans and the shopkeeper grinded it in front of us and also packed in customized packets (100gms each). You need to have great bargaining skills.. Tip - always ask for 30-40% of the proposed price. They accept vnd, USD or even cards. But if u want to pay by card they will charge u 3% extra.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 December 2022
- annminkyUnited States1,591 contributionsMarket with cute stuff ! Be prepared to get dizzy like meJust like any other public market in the world, BTC, is a place where you can find most anything, from real things to fake things. If you’re not use to such a place, you may say that the vendors are pushy, aggressive and won’t take no for an answer. They will start by over-pricing an item to see if you take the bait. I say it’s all about bargaining. Ignore them and they will lower the price. Travelers should keep in mind that these vendors behave this way because they want to sell their stuff. It’s part of the culture. I went to this market to see the cute handicrafts they have. I bought several cloth pencil case. My niece bought several cute coin purse to bring back home as souvenirs. I also bought tea. Oh! So good. So much to see! At the end, it made me dizzy to see all the stuff😂 It’s still worth visiting.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2023
- Abovetheclouds2,233 contributionsRude vendors. Highly inflated prices. It does however have a nice atmosphere and some good stalls but difficult to browse.Having travelled through most of Asia, this is one of the worst markets I have been to. This is purely because of the vendors. The vendors are aggressive so be prepared to be hounded to buy anything and everything from the kitchen sink. They highly inflate the prices when they see tourists. When you refuse and bargain with them, the prices are still way overpriced. They are not friendly and only care to sell their items. There are some nice things however like quality souvenirs plus bags and loads more. There are also the usual junk stalls. The market has a nice atmosphere. Go earlier in the day, morning or afternoon. Post C-19 and the market is less active at night. If you see something you like and want to buy it, then remember where the stall is or buy it straight away. It is easy to get lost browsing through the many stalls as a lot look the same or sell similar items. The food area was reasonably clean. If you want cheap local cuisine, food and drinks looked to be OK but we didn't try it. Most of the market is covered so this is a good idea for a rainy day. If you want to buy dried fruit or sweets they told me that they only sell in bulk. I just wanted a small quantity and they refused. I bought one fresh mango where the lady wanted to sell it for more than what I would pay for it in London. I refused and she agreed to a more reasonable price. Most vendors however don't bargain. I saw a scarf I really wanted. I asked the vendor about the price a few times. She kept avoiding the question, instead telling me about the quality, the colours and other information. What she was trying to do was look me up and down, trying to see what I could afford to pay and how many scarves I wanted! I pushed her again and then she asked me what I wanted to pay. I just walked off and then she shouted some high price. You would think they wanted business especially post C-19. A lot of people were browsing but I saw very few buying! Be careful with bags and purses especially when busy. Better to keep small change. Even when walking outside, watch how you go as motorbikes pass by close to the pavement. They are known to snatch bags.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 January 2023
- Jenniffer TangDallas, Texas2 contributionsIt's a fun experience but you have to have a lot of patience. You have got to be a great negotiator when you're here. They sometimes more than triple their prices. We've walked away several times and they'd pull you back in and agree with your counter offer. Some are very rude and I know this first hand since I speak Vietnamese and can understand them (they don't know that). We spent almost a whole day there -- even had lunch and a snack at that market. It's a fun experience but you have to have a lot of patience.Visited December 2022Written 23 January 2023
- Fran-six D6 contributionsCommon marketWe went there to appreciate the diversity. We quickly realized that there are mainly three type of stalls: clothes, nuts, tea, and repeating each other. Same clothes everywhere at the same price. Same stall of tea/coffee next to each other. Overall, the offer of produces is low. It's quite disappointing considering the size. Made limited purchases and got a huge turn-off when we saw rats running between stalls.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2023
- Jonathan C.472 contributionsben thanh marketOne of the oldest surviving structures in the city. Plenty of shops for clothing, souvenirs, gifts. Lots of food spots as well. Closes surprisingly early though, at 9pm the majority of shops were closed.Visited February 2023Written 16 February 2023
- PollyLondon, United Kingdom67 contributionsNice but not twiceWe we’re stopping over in Ho Chi Ming & wanted to go and explore the night market as we were staying in a local hotel. The area and market is super popular with vendors and tourists making it quite a busy and bustling place (hold on to your bags). The main market area is indoors with lots of vendors and stalls selling mostly souvenirs, big bags of nuts and clothing/bags. There are also some small food vendors inside too. Great to see, but probably wouldn’t go again or recommend to a friend 😊Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2023
- Rachel GCork, Ireland11 contributionsGreat place for a bargain but like a confusing maze to navigate around! So many goods on sale here from sportswear to handbags, jewellery to underwear and not forgetting vietnamese crafts and souvenirs! No air con so it does get very warm if doing a lot of shopping. Overall, the quality of the products on sale was very good. Expect to haggle, can get anything from 50-75% less than the original price quoted if you are firm. Give yourself plenty time to shop around.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 February 2023
- cate sMelbourne, Australia109 contributionsGreat items for Sale, but very aggressive & Pushy Sellers.I love visiting markets on my travels & love to browse. Unfortunately, due to the aggressive & pushy nature of the sellers, browsing & having a pleasant walk around Ben Thanh is out of the question. So many great souvenirs & handicrafts for sale ( which I love) , however you lose your train of thought with the constant harassment and end up looking to find the nearest exit to get out of there. It is next level, which is a shame because if they let tourists browse in peace and be able to move from stall to stall in their own time , they would generate more sales. It is still popular and the place to go, however hubby and I spent very little time there and didn't return during our week in Ho Chi Minh.Visited February 2023Written 8 March 2023
- zuluwarriors187973 contributionsOverratedThe market frankly is a tourist trap. Lots of knock-offs that are not really great quality, knick-knacks and souvenirs. The stalls sell the same things, so if you seen one, you seen all. Of course, bargaining is a must. We were quoted very different prices from different stalls. No need to waste any time if you sense you will be fleeced; just move to the next stall. Lots of pushy and touchy stall owners. Though it was during noon time, the heat was bearable. But then again, we are from hot sunny Singapore.Visited March 2023Written 15 March 2023

The market traders here are unrelenting. If you so much show any interest in their products they will chase you until you buy. They also will put the price around 3 times higher in the hope you buy it for double the price and think you got a bargain.
My advice for shopping - find the product you want. Get prices from 3 different traders and pick the one who gave you the most fair price and then ask for slightly lower price.
I refused to give anyone my money who asked the 3 times the price even if their final price was the lowest. Its called karma.
and don't stress about an extra dollar. it means more to them than you. But at the same time, don't pay 3 times the price!!!!!

A must-visit for anyone looking for an authentic shopping experience. With a rich history dating back to the early 1900s, the market offers a diverse range of goods, from fresh produce to souvenirs. The atmosphere is vibrant and the prices are very competitive. Whether you're looking for a unique souvenir or just a place to explore, Ben Thanh Market is the perfect place to visit.

It's your standard Southeast Asian market scene – loud, bustling, and always a bit overcrowded. It’s not particularly unique and imo not a must see spot in the city.
The place is a maze, and browsing isn't the easiest, but it's okay if you're up for the chaos. You can find most everything from food and coffee to clothes and souvenirs. Be prepared to bargain hard, otherwise you’re going to get ripped off.

Great food and cafe around that area
There are many shops where you can get gifts and snacks. Do remember to bargain at least 40% less if you love the items.

Ben Thanh market is definitely worth a visit but don’t expect to find anything different or unique. You will however find copies of almost every well known luxury brand. Prices are ‘flexible’ starting from almost double of what they would be willing to accept and it is up to the buyer to negotiate (bargain). If you walk away and they don’t call you back, you know that your offer is too low.
They obviously know that women are bigger buyers than men because the cry to attract attention is always “madame’.
The market is a great experience.

Just want to recommend Binh at shop no. 616. Good quality and reasonably priced. They accidently left out one of the tee shirts and when I questioned it the next, they gave another shirt, no questions. You xant ask for more than that, good people, so support them

These markets are really overwhelming. And sellers harass you badly.
If you're wanting your typical market item, these are the best markets to go to as there is everything under the one roof, however, I Couldn't wait to get out of there!
One of the most hectic experiences of being here!

All the answers above seem reasonable except the older man from Perth who was rude and demeaning. We travelers are all different ages and levels of experience.
If you do not feel comfortable walking about maybe you can hire a local who wants to make some money to do your shopping. You can find through the front desk. Take a picture of Your empty tube or draw a picture. Ask front desk for guidance on price of shopper and product. Make sure you have firm understanding with shopper in advance about money. Good luck.

The only other market we visited was near the pink church and the 7-storey pagoda. Don't know what it was called. Check it on a local map.

Not really, and regardless I believe you'd be better off elsewhere.
Saigon has plenty of shops like this you can find. Ben Tanh market isn't a place I would recommend for this.
Do you open on february 5?

Most likely not. That’s almost like Dec 25th. It will be a ghost town in Ho Chi Minh those days.
