This is a typical local market with lots of produce and protein. Lots of shops selling cheap but not fashionable clothes and a whole floor selling fabrics. We were not interested in anything I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want to buy fabric

Cho Hom is Hanoi's fabric market, and it makes an excellent destination for those on both longer and shorter stays in Hanoi. There are two main reasons people go there: to buy fabric, or and just to be in awe of all the colours, textures and life here. Yes, we are talking hundreds of stalls with fabrics stacked to the roof. It can get hot here so make sure you are well fed and hydrated (although there is a food market on the bottom floor). Ok. It is fun just to roam around through the market, exploring tightly packed passageways with locals going about their business. But, the real angle here is fabric. You can buy almost any fabric here, much more in the general market at Dong Xuan. For those starting out, 1.5 m is about what you need for 1 shirt and 2.5 m is about what you need for a dress. For a basic cotton you should not be paying more than 100,000 dong per metre … and some may be much less, say 50,000 dong. For special fabrics, well the sky is the limit. I avoided paying anything more than 200,000 dong per m for anything because I found it hard to judge quality (and I didn't trust myself). Once your fabrics are in hand you should be able to find your way to a tailor … there aren't so many tailors plying their trade here (distinct from the Hoi An fabric market), but there are some in the streets nearby, and of course all over town, especially in the old quarter.

I was looking for silk to take back to the UK and visited this market south of Hoan Kiem Lake. It was an Aladdin's cave of every fabric you could think of. For any stitcher, it is a must, at wonderful prices.

If you don't want the claustrophobia of the market I suggest you head down Tran Xuan Soan Street, which is on the southern border of Cho Hom and turn right down Phung Khac Khoan Street. The market is great fun but this short street must have all the material you might need. It is lined on both sides with many dozens of small fabric shops. As a bonus there is a beautiful temple two thirds of the way down on the left. It is currently under renovation, March 2017, and this in itself is fascinating. My wife had a great time getting material in this street and the prices are for locals ie not rip off.

Got lost a couple of times looking for this market. This place is well off the beaten path and the address listed on Trip Advisor was wrong, as was Lonely Planet.
If you enjoy sewing and like fabric, you might like this place. The second floor is an overwhelming selection of fabric, everything from rayon to cottons to embroidered and upholstery and wedding lace. On the main level is a farmers market and women's clothing and accessories shopping arcade. I found a couple of nice embroidered blouses for $5 with very little bargaining.

This market is crazy, fabric everywhere. There's not a lot of patchwork cottons or non stretch fabrics, but there's some fantastic jerseys, stretch wools, chiffons, satins, embroidered and sequined material, tulle, fleece - endless!
You will get a lot of weird looks depending on how lost or confused you look, and lots of people calling you over. Definitely know what you're after and be firm, avoid saying maybe and maybe have the words for the style pattern or fabric on paper to show. You might also get a few people following you but it was only because they wanted a photo of a westerner.
I found one stall I visited twice, the ladies had good English and weren't too pushy but found similar things to show me from the stuff I buying. I ended up buying a lot from them, they weren't budging on haggling but I don't haggle very well since it's already so reasonable. I attached the business card of the stall I liked and the silk and satins I picked up (it got damaged by my phone case). I tend to go for crazy stuff that I'm less likely to find else where.
So yeah, careful not to get carried away but you won't break the bank if you do. bring water, a calculator, paper and pen, and a clear idea of what you want. Expect it to be crowded with stalls but for the majority of ladies to be sitting watching or maybe sleeping, some may be enthusiastic but others will ignore you. It can get very hot, and it's easy to get a little lost. Be firm about decisions, a maybe is more frustrating than no.

As the other reviews have commented, this place is a little hard to find, so having the name of the market in Vietnamese to help you with asking for directions will be very useful.
The market has a wet market area, and a vegetable market on the ground floor of the indoor market area. You'll find the fabrics up on the upper level, and it really does look exactly like the user-uploaded pictures appear.
The pathways between the fabric stores are very narrow and cramped. And the vendors generally don't have the best command of English, so be prepared to whip out your calculators to bargain.
However, the best part about this fabric market is that there's pretty much every type of fabric you might want, in every print and design imaginable - from material for suits and dress shirts, to elaborate heritage and modern lace, to glittery & shimmery sequinned fabrics for dance or costume-wear.
The vendors were also happy to sell 1m quantities to us, which meant that I managed to get a good selection of patterns for quilting and smaller crafts.
And unlike in the fabric markets of Ho Chi Minh City, vendors here are open to haggling, especially for larger purchases. Our group took home about 30m of fabric, collectively, in high quality pure cotton and lace, for just under US$150. We felt that it may have been possible to push for even cheaper, but in comparative value to the prices we pay at home for equivalent quality, it was already a steal.
Definitely a must-visit if you're a fabric buff.
Within the indoor market (and surrounding it) are also a myriad of local foods to try, from street vendors selling mouthwatering fruit and delicate, translucent dumplings to more modern cafe, just in case the fabric shopping tires you out (which is a real possibility). :)

Crazy amounts of fabric upstairs, no air conditioning so prepare to sweat.
Downstairs is fruit/veg, shoes, ready made clothes including underwear and swimmers.

The location of this market is wrong on tripadvisor. It is next to 81 Pho Hue, Hanoi, on the crossing with Pho Tran Xuan Soan. Had a hard time finding it, but with the help of locals I got there. The fabric stalls are all tightly cramped, but there is so much choice of all fabric stacked on top of each other. Spent an average of 4 euros per metre for a lot of high quality looking fabric.
Only the experience of slipping through all stalls is already unforgettable.

There is a wet market on the ground floor where you can buy all sorts of fruits & vegetables and some street food. Ground floor is also the place for finished products. We went because I was hoping to find juice silk products instead of buying them in the Old Quarter, alas this is more the place to go but silk fabrics for making your own. Upper floors are all raw goods. But you might enjoy the Pho Hue neighborhood. Much more authentic than touristic Old Quarter.

I would say some begin shutting by 5:45 and certainly by 6 the fabric stalls start closing down. The main level fruits, and vegetables might stay open a little longer.

By chance did they have any stonewashed linens by the yard?
I'm on the hunt for quality linen to make tableware (table cloths, napkins, bread bags, etc.)
