Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thap Rua Tower is also known as Turtle Tower or Tortoise Tower and is situated in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. There is no way of reaching it, but can be seen anywhere around the lake. Look up the legend of Turtle Tower, as it is more interesting than the tower itself.

Thap Rua Tower is also known as Turtle Tower or Tortoise Tower and is situated in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. You can walk around the lake and see Thap Rua Tower from all sides. Looks better at night when illuminated.

While strolling around Hoan Kiem Lake, I looked at the lake from near Hanoi Central Post Office and saw strange structures. When I checked the map, it said "Tower of the Turtles". It seems to be a place with many legends, and it is said to be lit up at night, but I couldn't wait until night to see it from the far side.

Located in the lake and you can't reach it. In the evening it is illuminated. Turtle Tower Hoan Kiem Lake was built in 1886 to bury the remains of the father of Nguyen Ngoc Kim, an intermediary between Vietnam and France during the French colonial period. After the French colonialists were defeated by the Vietnamese army, the tower was renamed Turtle Tower in honor of the hero Le Loi.

Very enjoyable place to visit, nominal entrance fee, something like 90pence. The bridge gets very crowded, hold onto your stuff! Not trying to be a kill joy but someone asked me to take a photo and I stuck out like a sore thumb as everyone else was local. When I said 'of course' and immediately handed my bag to my husband, I'm pretty sure they looked completely gutted, there were a lot of people standing around me at this point and I had the feeling they were pick pockets. Just be aware. I would still not hesitate to go back and I'm a bit of a health and safety freak but it's totally fine, like anywhere if you're switched on. The steps were a bit slippery too. Enjoyed and don't let potential criminals put you off. This is not a reflection on Hanoi, there are pick pockets anywhere and I felt safe in Hanoi at all times, just invest in a suitable bag/belt. There are loads of great cafes around the lake so this is definitely a great place to come.

With Hanoi, Thap Rua is more than a tower. It stood in the same boat with us for hundreds years and watched the happiness and sadness of people here. Luckily, I was born in Hanoi where I deeply felt warm, happy and peace. Turtle tower is the thing that I must see whenever I walk around Sword Lake. It was always there, silent, ancient and beautiful tower. Many photographers have been there but interestingly each one has other view about Thap Rua. They admit that they have never shown the best of Turtle Tower yet. Each time, they had new feelings and experiences. Perhaps, that all things Hanoi People have when they go for a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. With me, whenever I feel stressed, I just need to get that, take a Trang Tien Ice Cream and watch Thap Rua, everything will simply let go.

This review is quite late. The Thap Rua (Tortoise) Tower stands in an islet in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. Although a relatively small tower it is an equally important attraction just like the nearby Huc (Red) Bridge and the Ngoc Son Temple.

You can see the tower clearly when walking around the lake. It’s also lit up during the night so it makes a nice scene when it’s dark.

The tower is in the middle of a large lake and not that easy to see. I didn't see any turtles when I was in Hanoi.
