    a new experience
Sow ticket prices vary by location. There are quite a few showtimes. During the performance, live music is played, performers sing. At that time, various dolls move in the water according to the story. This is a new and unprecedented experience.

    Tradition is living
If you visit Vietnam you must visitthe water puppet theater in Hanoi. It is such a great show, the musicians, the music, the actors are really artists in what they are doing. I would go a second time. And I am very happy that this tradition lives on. It is amazing and heart touching!

    A must see
This show is delivered in Vietnamese and I absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was amazing! The show is very cleverly done and it is beautiful to watch. The live instrumental and vocals left me in awe. If you are in Hanoi this is a must.

    Amazing!
During our stay in Hanoi my husband & I had a private guide who organised front row tickets for us at at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. The puppet show was very entertaining and the music and the singers were excellent. Our experience here was further enhanced by a private visit backstage to meet the artists and have a demonstration of how things actually worked. I don't think we truly appreciated the skill involved in putting on such a show until we actually saw behind the scenes.

    Highly recommend
Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is a must when in Hanoi. it's near the lake, the program is very special and interesting. Having the live band and vocal singers on each side of the water stage. You can also rent audio to understand what the play is all about for 50000 each. Highly recommend.

Nothing to write home about but nice to experience for a little culture
This was a lovely event to go to whilst in Hanoi to experience some Vietnamese culture. It’s a basic but popular theatre and a short show which is very cleverly performed with water puppets telling stories of culture. We got a headset to explain the stories but in all honesty that probably wasn’t needed as you can generally make out what’s happening. Nice music and singers very authentic on the side of the water stage throughout. Worth going to in order to say that you have done it and to experience but I wouldn’t say it was a massive hit and something I’ll remember - I think you could easily get bored if it went on any longer but given that it’s about 45 minutes it’s cheap and an experience!

it is a very impressive traditional performance. Actors control puppets on the water stage, singers and musicians perform live on both sides. We advise you to rent an audio guide if you want to understand the content of the performance. It is a summary of the story. It's quite cheap at only 50000 VND or about 2.5 USD for each

    Enjoy The Show!
We enjoyed this well-done, very cute & colorful show, depicting part of Viet Nam's aqua-history. Get your tickets& arrive early & try to find the opportunity to be allowed inside ahead of most of the line because this is a very popular show both for locals & foreigners (prices differ depending upon where you are from). Outside is VERY crowded but, once inside, the audience is quite respectful. It is a good show & the puppets are beautiful. Also, read the paper program for the show to learn the history being depicted & how the puppets are manipulated through & from under the water. The musicians, playing traditional Vietnamese instruments are also very, very good.

We attended tonight and the show was great. We'd probably recommend paying for the audio as we didn't really know what was happening but it was good to watch the puppets. The theatre is very clean and beautiful. Only issue we found was the seats are quite small and squishy so my partner who is 6"1 was pretty uncomfortable. The seating is scattered but we had a fair bit of trouble seeing some of the show due to it being behind the people's heads in front of us. If we did it again we would aim for the front or 2nd row. The music was wonderful and the whole thing is very clever. Would recommend!

Loved the Thang Long puppet show. The singing and story lines was easy to follow and didn’t require a translated version to listen too. We had a little difficult seeing and my son was unable to see over the heads of other audience members. To avoid this I recommend getting a seat in the front of the theatre. Purchase of tickets was easy- I went by two hours before the show and purchased at the theatre. A lot cheaper this way then doing it online or through tour company and you also can select your seats. Enjoy 😊

It was a rainy afternoon and we thought we’d give the water puppet show a look to dry off.

It was very interesting to hear the legends and see the imagery cleverly portrayed with the water puppets. Fire dragons breathed smoke under water and flames from fireworks - the theatre did get quite smoky!

Tales were accompanied by traditional instrumental music and singing. It was a little hard to understand the English translation at some points but overall we enjoyed it and it was good value for money.

We called in on the off-chance of getting 2 tickets for the evening of New Years Day and were lucky! We paid 200k dong (about £6.50 each) for one of the front rows.
There are several shows a day (info on website but couldn’t see a way to book online).
Very easy boxoffice arrangement. Small cafe but we didn’t partake.
Lovely show, we particularly appreciated the music played on traditional instruments.
All the singing/narrative is in Vietnamese but we could understand the stories.
We were very impressed by the technical ability of the puppeteers who come out at the end to take a well-deserved bow.

We visited the puppet theatre with our 2 year old son to attend the 3pm showing.

The show is approx 45 minutes long and has a water puppet feature accompanied by music and singing. It’s not normally my cup of tea, but we all really enjoyed it. Even our 2 year old who started off by saying he was scared and wanted to leave, eventually loved it and walked about it all afternoon and evening!

The standard seats are comfortable and spacious, and the view is generally fine (unless you have someone in front of you trying to video the show - luckily we didn’t, but noticed others that did!).

The price is reasonable, and the theatre is indoors and so not weather dependant.

Would definitely recommend taking the time to see this show during a visit to Hanoi.

I can say I really enjoyed the first 30 minuets of the show but it gets a little repetitive after a while. Since this is something very unique and special for Vietnam I would still recommend going there. The theatre has nice and comfortable seats und is fully air conditioned. So you can rest, recharge and cool down from the heat outside. There are also toilets available. The shows sell out quickly so make sure you arrive on time. The cheaper seats are just as good as the more expensive ones but you have to up some stairs. Very unique experience.

We sat in the second row center and were able to get a few good photos of the amazing water puppet show. We didn't get the audio headphones so I can't comment on that. However, the show is easy to follow so I don't feel it is necessary to pay extra for the English commentary. I would just say go and enjoy! Each vignette is very short. I would suggest having your hotel book you the best possible seats in the theater as soon as you know what evening you want to go. It was nice to be so close!

We were told this was a must see, and it was an enjoyable 3/4 hour. The room was packed and pretty hot and we were in the second row which was uncomfortable for me as I'm fairly tall (wife was just fine). The long rows and entry only from side made seating a bit of a trial and some patience required with lots of standing up and sittingdown unless you are all together in a large group.
The show itself was enjoyable - skilled muisicians, singers and puppeteers. Some of the nuances wnet over our heads and what we thought was a guide was a set of postcards when we were seated - so we winged it :)
Not the hilight of Hanoi - but a nice slice of history/culture.

We visited on a Thursday night. We didn’t book in advance but queued and got a ticked to the next showing. I would recommend buying a ticket about 1.5 hour latest in advance.

The tickets ranged between 100-200 VND
(£4-8) we booked to sit in the middle section for 150 VND. I couldn’t see easily so decide to move to an empty seat further back. I would recommend either sitting right at the front or booking nearer the back.

This was a 50 minute show made up for 17 short folk / traditional stories. We got an audio guide. This help describe each short story and what was happening. I would recommend this to learn about the history / stories however I think it would be just as enjoyable with out.

The live music was also great.

Even if you have reserved tickets you wait in a chaotic line outside the theater before the show to pay and be assigned seats. The live music from the singers and musicians on either side of the water tank was excellent, and the water puppets were fun and unique. However, the story is a little thin for the hour-long runtime, and the audience at our particular performance was incredibly rude, with several members holding up phones in front of our line of sight recording the entire show. I also wish we learned more at the theater about how the puppets were created and operated!
