    Experience Vietnamese culture
This is not your typical puppet show. The puppets are controlled by skilled puppeteers who hide behind a bamboo screen and make the puppets dance on the water. The show features colorful scenes from Vietnamese folklore, history and everyday life, accompanied by live music and singing. You'll be amazed by the creativity and craftsmanship of the puppets and the puppeteers. The show is suitable for all ages and lasts about an hour. Don't miss this opportunity to see a traditional art form that has been preserved for centuries.

    Lots of fun :))
We had a wonderful time watching the Thang Long Water Puppet show in Hanoi. It was a captivating performance of traditional legends and historical tales, with colorful puppets, live music and amazing water effects. The puppeteers were very skilled and expressive, and the theater was cozy and comfortable. I highly recommend this show to anyone who wants to experience a unique and ancient art form of Vietnam.

    Unique experience
Great experience. Although the audio guide (I got mine in English) doesn't give a lot of details, it is actually really nice to hear the basis of each story. It does not translate all the words as they sing, but I enjoyed that because then I could take in all the sounds/music without trying to also hear the audio guide. I would recommend doing early in your trip, as it provides some insight into some of the local stories, for example about the turtles at the nearby lake.

    Great experience
Went here with no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised! It was a fantastic experience, something completely unique! We didn't pay extra for the audio guide and still enjoyed it. The musicians and puppeteers are very talented.

    A joyful experience to remember
Great experience, looked around the theatre and children and adults were all just as enthralled. Absolutely fine that it wasn't in English, it was still great fun to watch and work out what was going on. Highly recommend visiting for anyone in Hanoi.

    Fantastic cultural experience
Fantastic colourful and very clever show. The stage (water pool) is quite low down so would recommend a seat near the front. The musicians and narrators are set higher up in each wing. The only thing I has an issue with is that (apparently) you are allowed to take photos and video. I had to ask the person in front of me to put her phone down because it was obscuring my view, and looking around the theatre the there were plenty of other phones raised.

    Fun and interesting experience!
We really enjoyed this. Ticket experience is a little clunky but the show itself is very entertaining with great performers. Unique and fun thing to do near old quarter. (And nice to have sitting break in the a/c!)

    Interesting experience
We really enjoyed the show at this unique Water Puppet Theatre which is centrally situated near Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The skill of the puppeteers is quite remarkable. If you can afford it go for the most expensive seats at the front for the best view.

Agreed that if you have never watched any water puppet show, you should try this out. There are many timings to choose from. If you dont want to queue, you can buy via Klook. Found out it is cheaper to buy at the counter. The counter lady will explain nicely to you where are the good seats. Do rent the translator for a small fee so that you can better enjoy and understand the show which is in Vietnamese. The seats are pretty tight so please have the courtesy to stand up for others to walk past you. I saw a couple simply didnt move at all and the other couples have great difficulty moving in. It will be great if they can rebuild the seats. Many ppl just lift up their phones & start taking photos & videos, blocking the ppl behind. Kind of irritating. Nevertheless, it is highly recommended.

The show is worth seeing but be very careful of the security guard who is extorting tourists of money to use the toilet. He is not always there but mindful!

If you have never seen a water puppet show, then for the small cost you should go. The show is made up of several short traditional stories, which you may not understand fully, but nevertheless it is entertaining. At the time of our visit, it appeared that tickets could only be purchased at the theatre box office and online tickets may not always be accepted - please check before purchase. The show is less than one hour and most seats have a good view.

This is the first time we are watching water puppet show. A unique experience to watch the traditional art form become live. Though the play is in Vietnamese, the story is quite comprehensible and comes live with melodious songs and vibrant music. Even in this digital world, it is wonderful to see the artists continue their traditional culture and maintain the legacy of puppetry to the next generations.
A must watch if you are in Hanoi.

My wife, three sons (10 months, 3 and 6 years old) and I visited the Thang Long Water Puppet Theater spontaneously and luckily we also got tickets. The play was really entertaining for the kids and us. We enjoyed the show and could definitely recommend it.

Amazing puppet show with good folk music and folk art of creating drama with puppets in water. Dragons spitting fire is spectacular. Funny little moments throughout.

A unique experience and highly recommended. You can buy your ticket at the theatre, though I would recommend booking in advance (at least a day in advance). The show was around an hour and was very entertaining. As well as admiring the puppeteers skills you can enjoy a local traditional Vietnamese orchestra. I would highly recommend going to the theatres web site before you go so that you understand what each act is about. Information can be found at the bottom of the page "Booking Tickets". Here is the current list of acts:

1. Tễu – The iconic character of Water Puppetry
Chú Tễu ("chú" means uncle, man, boy or Mr. in Vietnamese) is a recurrent and the most notable character in water puppetry. Tễu means "laugh" in ancient Vietnamese. He is a jester who provides witty comments on political and social realities, especially officials' corruption. His appearance is of a smiling boy who often wears nothing but a simple loincloth, sometimes accompanied by a simple open vest.

2. Dragon dance, phoenix dance
The Dragon is considered the ancestor and also the mascot with an important position in the folk culture beliefs of Vietnamese people. The Phoenix is the mascot of Vietnamese folk beliefs, often living in pairs, the male is Phuong and the female is Loan. The dance of the ‘Loan Phuong’ couple is a symbol of fidelity in married life.

3. Buffalo riding and playing the flute
Describing the peaceful life of Vietnamese countryside, the flute's sound reminded the love of expatriate for the country.

4. Agriculture, rice planting
The daily work of Vietnamese farmers: plowing, slapping water, harvesting... That image of hardworking farmers in the field shows the spirit of ardent Vietnamese farmers.

5. Frog fishing
Telling a humorous story about a farmer's fishing trip, fishing for frogs is both a livelihood and a pastime for farmers in their leisure time.

6. Chasing the Fox
This is the story of an old farmer couple who struggle to chase away a sly fox to protect their ducks.

7. Fishing
Flock of fishes swimming flexibly in the water; A couple of fishermen sit on a small boat, a farmer is shoveling shrimp; A mischievous guy who teases a girl is a vibrant picture of the daily life of Vietnamese farmers. …

It was our first time watching the Water Puppet Show at Thang Long. We were amazed that the water puppetry was performed in a pool of water with the water surface being the stage. Apparently it is a unique art which originated i the delta of the Red river in the 10th century.

Amazingly skilled. They danced, fought, and one even looked like it was breathing fire (or maybe just sneezing? Hard to tell underwater). The musicians were rocking out, the puppeteers were soaked, and the audience was laughing and cheering. Even without knowing the stories, the craftsmanship and the sheer energy was contagious. We felt like kids again, completely drawn into the spectacle.
