Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This small temple is in the heart of the Old Quarter. Its mainly used by locals and seemed to be pretty quiet I.e. no Crowds. A nice place for a quick visit in Old Quarter.

Nestled among modern buildings in the old/historic area of Hanoi, the temple provides a quiet spot away from the busy streets.
The building is beautifully constructed and well maintained. It offers a great glimpse to the areas history and religion.

Glad it was free to enter. The honorific white horse definitely remains in the center but it is so crowded out by everything else it feels cluttered. My apologies if my lack of detailed Confucian knowledge shows here, but I'm not used to seeing a tower of unopened beer cans as a religious offering. It is very dark and includes a small running fire burning symbolic stacks of various foreign currencies. Could have easily walked right past the entire thing.

In the heart of the Old Quarter, the small Bach Ma Temple is said to be the oldest temple in the city, though much of the current structure dates from the 18th century and a shrine to Confucius was added in 1839. It was originally built by Emperor Ly Thai To in the 11th century to honour a white horse that guided him to this site, where he chose to construct his city walls. Passing through the wonderful old wooden doors of the pagoda one can see a statue of the legendary white horse, as well as a beautiful red-lacquered funeral palanquin.

The temple is under serious renovation - a building site!! No information as to any completion date. It’s covered in so only possible to see vague resemblances of its possible glory.

We tried to visit this temple at the start of October, but unfortunately it seems to have turned into a building site and we couldn’t access it. Please be aware, to avoid disappointment.

Bach Ma temple is located right in the heart of Old Quater so you can easily access by walk if you stay in the old quater. But it cannot be compared to other bigger temples such as Tran Quoc pagoda (in west lake) or Temple of Literature. They usually held small festivals during 1st day or 15th day of lunnar calender each month

This is supposed to be the oldest temple in Hanoi. While it isn’t large, it impressed us with live traditional dancers.

The ambiance is great and really informative. I was told that it was one of the oldest temple in the Old Quarter. Worth the stop!

When visiting this Temple and I assume you have visited the other pagodas and sites in the city, did you need to hire a tour guide to help explain the history? Or is it fairly simple that could be done without a tour guide?
