Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really loved going around the citadel and military parts. Recommended by people we met, was well worth the visit. Plenty of shade and cool parts to go to on a hot day too. Really interesting artifacts from 9th century to modern day and can see bits that have been excavated. Lots of information from how it was built and rebuilt, French occupation and the Vietnam war. Thoroughly good few hours spent going around it and well worth a visit.
Only issue was taxi charging extortionate rates to go back to town - so we walked!

Very fortunate to have some friends in Hanoi take us round the city on their scooters. One of the stops was the citadel.
July in Hanoi is not cool but getting to visit this place with a local is.
Always interesting to learn a little history but the addition of a local perspective added a lot. Vietnam's history is full of other nations trying to impose their will on this beautiful country. Staring at the empty space where ancient buildings were removed by the French. Climbing down into the underground bunker where leaders sheltered from Us bombardment. So many reminders here of a peace and independence achieved at great cost.

Some folks need co start stimulation. This is not for you. It’s an ancient citadel coupled to a military museum steeped with history. If history is your thing then the citadel is an amazing option. You must Understand that VN does not have the funds to have a smithsonian grade museum but this is a genuine citadel dating almost as old as Hanoi. If you have a guide you’ll enjoy it that much more. Both the citadel and military museum you can eat Mark a day for these two venues in my humble opinion

Although the pictures make it seem that this place is very beautiful you can tell only the main gate usually appears. Even though it is a place with great historic value, it is poorly maintained and the descriptions are very poor. You can see electric cables everywhere, junkyard and construction debris alongside the buildings... The archaeological site across the street has nothing to see. No explanations anywhere and no one that speaks english.
We wasted our time.

After paying a small admission fee a visitor walks to the distant Citadel entrance. Inside are lanes with old shade trees and different buildings of importance. There are changing exhibits and as vocal point.... a huge carved precious stone turtle. I am not sure about a restaurant, but there is a toilet at the Citadel.

I've read some luke warm reviews about the citadel and I must say I can't really agree with them. It is what it is, not much is left but the large main gate and the flag tower, but there are still lots to discover here and especially the excavations are very interesting. Don't miss the D67 building that was built during the American War where the Communist leadership managed the war effort from. A very good visit in Hanoi. Also pass the war museum on your way back in to town.

This is identified as world heritage site by UNESCO and it is a palace built in the 19th century and despite it being damaged it is worth seeing. Even after so many years it gives you an idea of how rulers in those days were living and had planned lot of things we plan for today
