It’s a street full of clothing shops and restaurants. Nothing too survey in my opinion.
I learned that each street in the area is named after a certain item sold like silk, fish sauce, goat meat, flowers, etc.
That round have been helpful for me to know ahead of time side I only had short window of time to find pure silk. Most stores sold silk blend- whatever that means.

Hang Gai is a long strip dotted with shops where you can buy (obviously) souvenirs and as its name implies, "Street of Hemp", silk. A silk dress or robe averages to USD50.00 where USD1.00 = 20,000 VND. Sometimes, much, much more which is the very reason, tempted as I was, why I didn't buy one but instead splurged on souvenirs.
My favorite souvenir shop, Mai Trang, is run by an old lady who doesn't force you to buy anything. In fact, she just sits on her place reading while you browse and will only look up if you need to ask something. This interactions suits me perfectly because I don't fancy being needled into buying. I bought around 40 pieces of bookmarks from her. These are made out of hand-painted bamboo. It's price is 20,000 VND apiece but she gave me a generous discount by giving me four out of 40 for free. :)
I was also able to buy refrigerator magnets which bear landmarks of "Hanoi", "Ha Long Bay", and "Vietnam" for the same price as the bookmarks each. Since I purchased around 20, she gave me two out of 20 for free. I really like her. If you're planning to hoard on souvenirs, Mai Trang is the place to do it. I'm attaching three photos so you can see the address and the silhouette of the lady seller. :)

West of the Hoan Kiem Lake a few blocks you will find Hang Gai Street. This street and a few others around are great for shopping for silk and other clothes, souvenirs and other Vietnamese goods - like ceramics, sewn and painted Vietnamese scenes, wall pieces and other things you might want to buy cheaply and take back home. There were a few gallery like shops as well selling paintings by local artists but we didn't find anything we liked that much.
We shopped around several of the clothing shops and ended up buying a few items to take back home. Most shops were selling personally designed and retailed clothing, stuff we can't find in Hong Kong (home), obviously the prices were much lower than we are used to paying, as well. The souvenir shops on the other hand were selling mostly the same items, shop after shop. So there was little reason to shop around other than to secure the lowest prices for your souvenir purchases.
If you are in Old Hanoi and want to do a bit of street shopping, Hang Gai, is a great area. Its just a few minutes from the lake in the old city and there are restaurants and bars not far so its a very nice place to visit.

This was our second visit to Hanoi in a period of seven years and we have had garments tailored for us around the World and based on our previous experience, we hoped to find a good tailor to have a few items of clothing made - a Casual Linen Jacket for my husband and some pants for me. I had brought along a pair of my own pants which I wanted copied but made slightly larger. My husband found a Tailor (Hien Silk - 100 Hang Gai St) that stocked the kind of linen in the colour he wanted and was measured up for his jacket and a date was set for the jacket to be ready (we allowed 3 days for making). The same shop did not have the colours in linen that I wanted, so we found another shop across the road (Thao Boutique 69 & 73 Hang Gai St) who had the fabric I wanted. Again we allowed 3 days for completion of my pants and I left with them the original pair I had brought with me. Both shops took our measurements and both asked for any special details that we wanted on our garments. Hien Silk had arranged to have the Jacket delivered by hand to our hotel on the Thursday. Upon delivery my husband found that the jacket sleeves were too short and the side seams of the jacket needed letting out, so off the jacket went again to be altered and for us to pick up from the tailor on the Friday morning, one day later than the arranged delivery time. In the meantime I had called into Thao Boutique to pick up my pants. Again they were not ready and when I tried the first pair on, they were way too tight even though they had taken my measurements at time of ordering. So we had to arrange to come back the next day (Friday) to pick up our goods. Friday came and we went to Hien Silk for the jacket which had been faultlessly altered and when I had a really good look at garment found it to be really well made and it looked great on. We were very happy with Hien Silk! Thao Boutique across the road was another thing altogether. My pants were not at the shop and a runner had to go and fetch them. When they appeared, I tried the first pair on and they still were not right, still scrimped on fabric and measurements. One of the other pairs (I had 3 pairs made) was fine, but 2 were not! So I asked that they make the required alterations to put this right and that they deliver the pants to our hotel as we were leaving Hanoi the next day (we always allow extra days when giving a delivery date for making). The sales person was not happy and although I had already paid half the cost of the pants upfront as a deposit, she asked for the rest of the money then and there. Of course I said no. No pants, no money! To cut the story short, my pants were delivered to our hotel that night and were finished and I was happy with them. The moral of this tale: Never tell the tailor your date of departure. Always allow at least 2 days extra for making, but do not reveal this as tailors will drag out the making time. Ask for a fitting additional to the first measuring to allow for any added adjustments. Don't assume anything such as seam finishing or lining, you have to specify all of this if you want big seams to allow for future adjustments and lining if this is something you require. Never give more than half of the total cost of the garment as a deposit and make sure everything is noted in writing. We would recommend Hien Silk, but I would not go back to Thao Boutique.

Check out Silk Like (Hand Made Silk) at 11 Hang Gai (right in front of Cafe Pho Co). She also sells cool note books and t-shirts. Buy from her! She's awesome.

This is one of the most busy streets in Hanoi and the Old quarter. Tons of shops, especially silk products, from scarfs to ties, embroideries, ready made clothes, bags..... A very good place for shopping in Hanoi. It is very easy accessible to other shopping section like Hang Trong street, Ly Quoc Su street, Nha Tho street... where more shops are available.

Great little shops selling exquisite fabrics. Scarves, wraps, ties, dresses .. in fact if silk floats your boat, this is heaven.
NB, respect the skill and position of these people and don't become an offensive bore by stupid Western haggling. Ditch the 15 year old Lonely Planet advice. You diminish yourselves and these great people by trying to screw down already exceptionally good prices and great value products. Give them a leg up and acknowledge that they have been doing this for centuries and maybe we should just value them for that. This street is an international treasure.. enjoy it.

It can be very hectic navigating this street. However, it was where we found the best value for shirts and blouses. KhaiSilk is just way too expensive now but quite a few independent designers have shops competing now. Elsewhere we found it was mostly junk!

Bought 2 nice good quality silk men's pyjama's for 55 US dollar each. Normally I pay 95 euro each. Bargaining was not successful, only 5 dollar reduction..

I stumbled on this street and was really surprised at the variety of shops. My best experience was at Tammy Design which offered 4 floors of well curated Vietnamese goods, from linens, lacquerware, horn jewelry, silks, it was all there. Less touristy and more designer in its vibe, I found many things I loved to bring home with me from this store. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. If you want something different from regular touristy offerings, make a bee line here.
Hang Kai Street also has other famous Vietnamese brands like Ipanema bags and Khai Silk near by.
It was a pleasantly surprising area to wonder through - I stumbled on a church, several nice cafes and even a mochi shop in the environs. A final treasure was threetrees diamonds and fine jewelry located at 15 Nha Tho Street, for designer Vietnamese fine jewelry. Pricey but unique.
Hang Kai Street also has other famous Vietnamese brands like Ipanema bags and Khai Silk near by.

Definitely get VND if you're in Hanoi or any other city in Vietnam. That's what the prices for items are usually listed as and you won't have to worry about the exchange rate on the street.

If I had to choose between the two, I would take USD. However, using your ATM at the many banks around Hanoi is your best option. Organize this option with your bank before you leave. Carrying around lots of cash is always risky, so if you use an ATM, you can withdraw the amounts you need for that day.
