Though not quite the same since a devastating fire in 1994, this famous market is nevertheless a landmark trading post.

- pigletbuddySingapore, Singapore16 contributionsNuts are worth buying thereQuite messy with many workers carrying big loads on their shoulders. Lanes are very narrow and hence difficult to navigate when it gets crowded. Apparels are not yup to fashion. One thing that is worth visiting is the ground floor shops selling nuts. Their prices for the cashew nuts there is the cheapest as compared to other shops else where and supermarkets.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 November 2023
- ShannonSuva, Fiji1,177 contributionsNot Just WholesaleMost traveller videos label this Market as a bulk wholesale market, when it's just as regular as other markets. Prices are much cheaper than Ben Tanh in Ho Chi Minh and the variety is also better. The negatives are that alleys are very narrow and congested and that vendors sell at particular times so even if they're seated there and you're wanting to buy they won't sell which was extremely odd.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 January 2024
- arpitamGurugram (Gurgaon), India962 contributionsLargest wholesale clothes hub in HanoiHanoi's largest clothes hub. If you are upto shopping hard, this is the place for you. This is a whole sale market also catering to retail purchase. The ground floor is where the tourists throng about which has all sorts of souvenirs. Bargaining skills will help you get 10-20% less price.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 April 2024
- Your Travel Buddy SGSingapore, Singapore32,240 contributionsA local marketVisited this local market at night but it was closed. However, there was a number of vendors selling items outside the market in the night too. Do take note of the time to visit. The architecture looked very old school as well. The street right outside the market was very busy and bustling with activities.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 June 2024
- nzwestieHamilton & Waikato Region, New Zealand488 contributionsGive it a miss!Did not like this market at all. Nothing we could not get elsewhere without the hassle and the rubbish to go along with it. Gave it a Poor rather than a Terrible as you might find something? But would not recommend it at all.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 June 2024
- LewisManchester, United Kingdom30 contributionsNot fantastic, worth a walk around, kill an hour.Visited in the daytime, mid-afternoon. Was not too impressed with the selection here, many low quality goods and slightly inflated prices also to boot. Layout was also a bit hard to digest and enjoy. Difficult when you come from MBK in Bangkok, chalk and cheese. If strapped for time, would not hesitate to skip. My advise, go during the early hours, midday it is smeltering hot- due to lack of air conditioning.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2024
- LingKuala Lumpur, Malaysia804 contributionsCheaper than in the shopsUnfortunately the night market in the old quarter was not open the weekend after Typhoon Yagi so we ended coming here to shop for food souvenir. We were not disappointed as there were so many vendors selling a wide variety of products from fresh fruits, dry food to clothing. The cashew and macadamia nuts we purchased here is a lot cheaper than in the shops. Remember to bargain to get the best price and if you’re paying with big notes, be sure to check your change as one of the fruit vendor outside the market tried to shortchanged me.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 21 September 2024

Dong Xuan Market is housed within a four-storey Soviet-style building on the northern edge of Hanoi Old Quarter. The market has a bustling wet market section on the ground floor, where locals shop for seafood, meat, and vegetables while the back section sells an array of pets (cats, dogs, and fish) and fresh flowers from all across Vietnam. If you’re looking to shop for souvenirs, head to the upper levels, where you can find numerous stalls selling tee shirts, fabrics, school uniforms, handbags, handicrafts, all of which are sold at wholesale prices. There’s also a massive dining area within Dong Xuan Market, with food vendors selling Vietnamese coffee and exotic local dishes for as low as VND 15,000. Highly recommended dishes include tiet canh (duck blood soup), fried frog, bun cha (marinated grilled pork served with noodles), and banh cuon (rolled cake). Dong Xuan Market is Hanoi’s largest indoor market, offering a wide range of goods such as fresh produce, souvenirs, accessories and clothing, as well as electronic and household appliances. This is an exciting day trip , go early in the morning have brunch and spend at least 4 hours exploring.

I love this place. A must visit place for any tourist. Very colourful and vibrant. Crowded and noisy but that is no reason to avoid this place. I was in Hanoi for ten days as a tourist and I made it a point to visit this place almost every day. Plenty of articles for foreighners to purchase. Bargaining is fun. The traders give you a good discount if you are a genuine buyer/It is always crowded with locals and tourists. Everything under one roof.Whole sale and retail. If one has not been to this market he is missing half of the fun of visiting the Old Quarter. There are retail shops at the entrance inside the market selling all kinds of nuts and other dry fruits at a reasonable price. I always purchased my food items from one of there shops. This place is at walking distance from most of the hotels in the Old Quarter.

I read a few bad reviews before going but end up going anyway. And I totally regretted my decision. The double story market was very packed, hot and smelly. The sellers were keen so sell and bargain though. But unfortunately, I found out that a lot of shops selling the same souvenirs outside are selling the same items at lower prices.

This is not a market for tourists at all. It’s in a building it’s cramped, messy and smelly but worst I’d all there nothing to buy from a tourist point of view.
Most stall holders speak very little English, only good think I did see was cashews nuts, dried fruit was nice.
I would most certainly give it a miss.

A huge local market selling almost everything. This market can be confusing with its narrow path and loads of goods displaying back-to-back. It is not a place to browse around. Go there with a mind of what you want to buy and get out! We bought various types of nuts, tea and nail clippers. Prices are cheaper depending on our negotiation skill. Well, it was a good bargain! WAIT! Only when we returned home, we felt so cheated by the weight. We were shocked that the 1.5kg of cashew nuts actually weighs only 1.25kg. 500gm of lotus nuts weighs 390kg, etc. From our experience, we were short changed between 10-20% in weight! Dont ever trust their weighing scale. It is sad that they cheated the tourists in this manner thereby creating a bad impression of the market.

Hanoi's largest market is located in the old quarter on the north side of Hoan Kiem Lake. It's a bit far from the lake to the market, but there are a lot of retail stores and restaurants along the road and in the surrounding old town, so it's a good distance to walk while sightseeing. Some shops in the market were closed in the morning, but they close before the night market, so I recommend going early. The interior is spacious, but the aisles are narrow enough that you can't pass each other, and there are small shops on both sides. There are many shops that cater to tourists, but you can also find many wholesale shops. The products are miscellaneous, including standard souvenirs, precious metals, clothing, miscellaneous goods, dried goods, and sweets. This is the case with other stores in Hanoi, but compared to Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, there is less pressure and there are fewer forced reverse searches, so you can carefully select items while comparing several stores. If you are looking for a suspicious item, please consult the store staff at your own risk. They will show you various items. Overall it seemed cheaper than Ben Thanh. Especially on weekends, it is crowded with locals and tourists, so please be careful with your valuables and luggage. Although it is not as bad as Ben Thanh, please be careful of the old men who call out to you in Japanese or English. Also, for hygiene reasons, it is best to avoid drinking fresh fruit juices inside and outside the venue. In Vietnam and other Asian countries, public toilets are often of poor quality, and there are few large commercial facilities or clean hotels around the market, so please make sure to stay at a hotel before heading out.

Get ready for some bargains . The things I would buy are dried mangoes , party / holiday/ Hawaiian shirts , cashew nuts , slippers , budget kids toys , souvenirs ... Get there before 4pm as after that the shut down process in the inside of market begins . Equally good bargains to be had outside the market such as belts / shirts / bags etc outside the market even at 10 to 11pm. Get ready to bargain down. Only pay for something that it's worth for you and not the suggested price and then bargain them down . Use a currency converter app such as XE. Bargain well and they will respect you for doing it but stay respectful.

Do not waste your time coming here or your money. There is nothing to see, it’s just a big filthy market. The vendors are rude. They are miserable people that hate tourists. They mostly sell things wholesale they do not sell to tourists. One lady shoved a sign in our face saying “no retail.” Atleast if you come here, you wont be hassled. They will just ignore you even if you ask a question. I don’t even know why this is recommended as a tourist attraction.

Great fun exploring this market although pick a cooler day to go, if you can. We went on a particularly humid day and by the time we emerged from the building we were drenched in sweat! The market is an intricate criss cross of aisles displaying clothing, underwear, fashion accessories, spices, dried fish, stationery and fabric. Very interesting and a great place to pick up cheap mass produced items

Hi any one know best place to buy football shirts in Hanoi premier league
Written 19 June 2019
You can buy a lot of items in malls there like vincom mega mall and Lotte centre and you will pay for for what you get here. Regaring this market which is Dong Xuan I had a really bad experience, I asked for a pair of shoes and the lady owner directly asked me not to touch any. She could have told me that it was for whole sale and not individual purchase. That was rude . Anyway If you are looking for any street shopping option then there are many but you gotta negotiate.

Hi guys, any idea do they sell fresh water pearls in this market? Thanks!
Written 5 February 2018
Hi Mandy,
Dong Xuan market only sells the below items.
The ground floor: seafood, meat, vegetables, pets (cats, dogs, and fish), fresh flowers from all across Vietnam
The upper levels: tee shirts, fabrics, school uniforms, handbags, handicrafts
Dining area within Dong Xuan Market, with food vendors selling Vietnamese coffee and exotic local dishes.
If you want to buy pearls, you can get it during your Halong Bay tour, i am sure many anxious sellers or tour operators will be out to get your money, but a word of caution, there are many fake pearl sellers out there too (fake pearls are mostly from China), so beware.
