- kenzaiHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam20 contributionsThank chef pickleWe had a memorable cooking lesson in Hanoi. I have participated in many classes around the world, such as Thailand, Cambodia, China... But with chef Hung, it was a memorable experience. With his professionalism and love for cuisine, he inspired me a lot. By going on a local trip with a lovely cyclo. The ingredients at the market create a new perspective on the people and cuisine here. Some street food creates beauty. The class is full of excitement, cutting ingredients, cooking. For us, it is a memorable memory. Thank you for all . chef pickleVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Ken SPittsfield, Massachusetts11 contributionsGreat cooking class. We had a private cooking class that was fantastic. We learned how to make many things, and they all came out great. Hoang was a great teacher and we really enjoyed our three hours we spent with him. We could not have asked for a better experience. He gave us all the recipes in writing as well as via email. It was an experience we will never forget. Highly recommend.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023

Hung (Pickle) is a true professional yet lighthearted. Importantly, the food we cooked tasted AMAZING. I highly recommend this class.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 November 2023

We learned how to cook some Vietnamees specialities and went to the market with chef Kung (Pico). He is really passionate about his job as a chef and can bring it very well to the tourists.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023

- Summer FChicago, Illinois12 contributionsTasty, delightful immersionThe most memorable and fun cooking class ever! We are visiting from Chicago and had a lovely host in Chef Huing. He took us on a market visit via pedi cab and showed us major ingredients and took us for snacks on the way. At our class at the restaurant we made ban xia, pho, spring rolls and banana leaf salad. He is very friendly and conversant in English and we learned about the culture as we cooked!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 November 2023
- Paul LDouglas, United Kingdom27 contributionsEnjoyable and interesting experience.A great experience. Small class (6). Reasonable amount of hands-on time, some useful tips, and recipes to take home.Chef Chris running the course clearly is passionate about what he is doing, which I'm sure is a key factor. One of the highlights was the visit to local market, where Chris got us samples to try of unfamiliar ingredients as well as explaining them. Skilled cooks in the group enjoyed it as well as those with much less cooking experience/skill.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2023
- Yh7Columbus, Ohio4 contributionsMust-do in Hanoi: An authentic and fun cooking class!A friend and I took the Hanoi local cuisine class with Chris. I booked on the Blue Butterfly website and got confirmation through email. We had a small class with another couple. Chris was passionate about cooking Vietnamese cuisine. He spoke very good English and led us through preparing the chicken soup before we went on the Market tour. Chris made sure we were all included in the preparation of the dishes and each had plenty of opportunity to participate. We made four dishes and had a great dinner afterwards. The chicken soup and grilled fish were heavenly. It was such a fun time and I highly recommend this cooking class with Chris!Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 November 2023

Highly recommended if you have time in Hanoi.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 December 2023

While both Chef Hung and Chef Chris were great, the class was poorly organized. In a nutshell, the restaurant isn’t really equipped to run a cooking class. No handwashing station, not enough chopping boards, and definitely not prepared to cater to different dietary preferences.
Our class, for some reason, was overbooked and had 15 people, so we ran out of space, chopping boards and aprons. They split the group into two and we did all the cooking and chopping on regular dining tables (makeshift station they set up). They offered a vegetarian menu but class was heavily focused on meat dishes and cooking - chopping and grilling meat for pho. That said, the market tour was great and both chefs were very good people and it was very hands-on. All the cooking and prepping were done by ourselves with little handholding which I liked. They also don’t have any spatulas so you better be a chopstick master! All in all, had this been a private class or cooking for a potluck dinner, it would’ve been a great experience. There are other restaurants who charge the same amount for a private class so Blue Butterfly isn’t cheap at all; still paid full price for the makeshift experience.

Visiting the market with Chris was already a great experience, but then the cooking class was the cherry on top. Starting from the herb's and vegetables until the broth - Chris made sure we learn everything there is to know to make a good vietnamese dish at home and what to watch out for.
He gave us many tipps and tricks that only locals know.
We highly recommend to book the morning class as it is a smaller group than in the afternoon.
Thank you Chris for the great time and your patience!

This class was so so good.
We decided to do the class after enjoying a wonderful meal in the Blue Butterfly restaurant. We chose the morning tour and joined a small class of 8 learning so much about Vietnamese cooking and the science and chemistry behind the techniques. Chef Chris was the best teacher and so friendly and knowledgeable. He was quietly assisted by the lovely Sno as we spent over 5 hours learning, preparing, shopping and cooking some fabulous food.
The trip to the market was great. The extra exhilaration of a cyclo ride made it all the more special.
We got to experience food shopping as a local.
The meals we prepared were shared with our new found friends. So much food too.
Excellent value.
Thoroughly recommend.

Had such a great time at this cooking class!! Hung has a great energy and is an extremely talented chef, we learnt so much and ate truly incredible food all day. I could not fault the experience, everything was extremely professional and we had loads of fun. So much is included for the price and you get a real taste of Hanoi, definitely recommend booking.

5 members of my family attended the Cooking Class with Chef Hung Pickle. It was the best cooking course we had ever done.
In fact, it was the highlight of my 6 day tour in Hanoi.
Chef Hung is excellent with both seniors and my 6 year old grandson declared it was also the best thing he has done.
Very patient, kind and expert in his field, Chef Hung picked us from our hotel, and then took us on a very informative market tour to buy the ingredients to cook our selected recipes.
Very experienced, Chef was skilful in time management as we completed all the deishee we planned to cook.
If I ever re-visit Hanoi, it will surely be to do more cooking with Chef!

I attended the cooking class with Chef Chris and I had the best time. He was very accomodating for my allergies and dietary restrictions and even made special food just for me to eat. Chef Chris was very kind, educational and made the experience so much fun. I loved every minute of the class, including the market tour, and the food was delicious!

Hưng-pickle provided us with a really exciting experience! Starting with a friendly welcome in the morning, then visit of the markets with a lot of information on products, possibility to sample some, buying the necessary for the cooking (and for self if desired), then return to the restaurant to prepare the meal. A lot learnt in terms of ingredients and techniques, with recipes conveniently available in printed and electronic format. All in all, a very professional experience, fun and interactive. With the cherry on the cake being enjoying the 4 different dishes prepared at the end!

I did the afternoon class with my parents and partner in April 2024.
This was a really great experience! After spending some time in Vietnam eating all the food, it was great to understand how it was all made. Chef Hung got all of us involved really effectively and was very responsive to our needs and requests.
The trip to the market was a highlight - it was amazing to see a local market and enjoy snacks from street vendors.
Overall this was a fantastic class and we made more than enough food to fill us all up (a banana leaf salad, pork spring rolls, bun cha, and pho).
Thank you to Chef Hung & the team!

We cook a lot back at home, so we had high expectations in local cooking classes in Hanoi, not just something touristy. Chef Hung Pickle chatted with us to understand our preferences and swapped banh xeo for spring rolls. We started the beef stock, and while the stock was simmering, we went out to the market. The short ride to the market was another small sightseeing experience for us! The market tour was interesting and we bought a few things there for our future use as well. We learned a lot of tips from Chef Hung (beyond foreign cookbooks), and we feel confident to remake the dishes back home. In fact, we plan to cook the dishes this coming weekend while our memory is fresh! 😹

Hello,
I am planning to take a cooking class for 6 people. Just wondering if you do classes on Sundays? and if possible, would you be able to give an approximate price per head? Thank you!

HI you would need to contact the cooking school directly, Im afraid. I attended the course, and thoroughly enjoyed it too

Hi does anyone know whether they also give vegetarian cooking classes?
Written 10 June 2016
Hi there,
Yes, I am vegetarian so I just made vegetarian versions of the meat dishes. It was all delicious and they were very careful not to have meat touch any of my food.
Hope that helps 😊

Hi! Where is this countryside location? How far is it from the central Old Quarters area? Do people cab back?

Hi when do you have classes, how long and what cost please. Looking for 2 people on 18 March

Cooking classes are held everyday as long as people are booking them. There's a morning class 9am - 1pm (4hours) and an afternoon class, can't remember the start time. Morning class is recommended because the market tour is more lively earlier in the day. Class is $35/person. Don't let them to try and charge you more money.

I would like to do a cookery class but my husband doesn't want to - can he watch?
Written 6 February 2016
I think they may ask for a small fee. I'm pretty sure they would want money for the market tour part of the class. Basically the highlight of the experience.
