Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What is wrong with all of the people writing reviews about this being a "memorial" to John McCain???
I have been to this memorial. I assure you, it is a memorial to the capture of John McCain. It is certainly not recognizing anything positive about McCain.
Americans are both gullible and naive. Get over yourselves.

The memorial is a small structure by Truc Bach Lake, the lake where McCain came down and was captured during the Vietnam war, beginning his long ordeal. I was moved to see this and it can be done easily and doesn't take long. Although my political views did not mesh with his, I have always had a deep respect for his service to the United States and I am very glad I got to see this memorial.

We saw the Memorial to John McCain as we walked along Truc Bach Lake. An interesting memorial with a lot of symbolism such as a figure with his hands raised, part of a wing (in concrete) and the letters USAF. He was shot down there while conducting a bombing raid in Hanoi so essentially it is a memorial to an enemy. Poignant visit for U S citizens. Nearby is the oldest pagoda in Hanoi, the Tran Quoc Pagoda which offers opportunities for some beautiful pictures.

This small memorial has always been special. I first lived in Hanoi from 1991 to 1995, the American War was still a little raw and most "Westerners" on the street were Russians. I would often walk down to this memorial which was generally overlooked and unkempt, it would bring home how desperate the situation must have been for John McCain. Hoa Lo Prison ("Hanoi Hilton") was still operating as a prison in 1991 and Hanoi was a very different place to today with very few motorcycles and cars, mostly bicycles and xichlos. If you walked past at night when the street were quiet there was often shouting from inside and a friend told me that you could hear the Americans in there during the war. I now live about 100 metres from the prison in a beautiful old French era house which was probably spared from the bombing due to the fact that the American POWs where so close.
Go to visit the memorial and take a moment to think about the horror of war.
Interestingly, the text on the monument has been updated to refer to John Sidney McCain instead of the original "Tchn Sney Ma Can". This was most likely done before his visit to the site.

This memorial to Jon McCain was erected because he was shot down near here. He parachuted into Truc Bach lake where the memorial is located.

The modest stone memorial erected adjacent to Trúc Bạch Lake - in which John McCain crash landed during the Vietnam War - is not spectacular. It’s the historic moment being commemorated that is so special. Therefore, the memorial is definitely worth a visit, at least for Americans.
With an almost unnoticeably small display, motorists could easily drive by and never even see this significant marker on the roadside. But standing here, you can reflect, imagining John McCain parachuting out of his Douglas A-4E Skyhawk that was destroyed by a missile, landing in the lake on October 26, 1967.
Vietnamese propaganda states that McCain was then rescued by kind civilian Vietnamese witnesses who swam into the lake. History tells us they were actually angry and abusive. Thus began McCain’s imprisonment from 1967 to 1973, a horrendous length of time for a prisoner of war. And he was only one of many!
But McCain overcame torture and suicidal thoughts to become a well-known politician and a leading advocate for the reconciliation between the U.S. and Vietnam. McCain became a beloved personality in Vietnam, and the two countries became allies.

One of the reasons for going to Hanoi was to see the Hanoi?Hilton where Sen.John Mcain was imprisoned!
Learnt there why they call it the Hanoi Hilton. The atrocities committed by the French were horrible in these prisons.
The dingy Death row cells and the original Guillotine used to decapitate prisoners.

This is a memorial to Senator John McCain, whose plane was shot down in 1967. It is situated on a busy (aren't they all!) road, overlooking Truc Bach lake. The memorial is quite small (I walked past it once without noticing it) but is unspoiled and from there you can cross the road to watch the sunset by the pagoda.

It was an honor to have the opportunity to visit this memorial and reflect on our efforts in Vietnam. Senator John S. McCain was a dedicated Navy officer who (like others), was willing to give his last full measure of devotion to fight for global peace and security.

Located on the banks of Truc Bach Lake is a memorial to Senator McCain. It consists of a small stone sculpture of a person with arms raised with a plaque of Vietnamese inscription.
