About
Soi Dog Foundation is S.E. Asia’s largest rescue organisation for vulnerable stray dogs and cats. For 20 years, supported by generous donations and global volunteers, SDF has worked tirelessly to reduce animal suffering through CNVR (Catch; Neuter; Vaccinate; Return) programmes. For animals unable to be returned safely to the streets, SDF provides sanctuary, as well as local and international adoption services. SDF is a haven where sick and vulnerable dogs and cats receive world-class medical care, and love. SDF is working in several countries to help end the inhumane and barbaric dog meat trade. Guided tours available Monday-Friday at 10:00am and 1:30pm. Following the 40-minute tour, visitors are encouraged to socialise with our lovely cats and dogs. Impromtu tours are not available between 11:30am and 1:00pm, although between these times, visitors are invited to socialise in the cattery or spend time in the visitor centre. Volunteers are welcome Monday to Friday from 9am.

- sarahgtjSilkeborg, Denmark7 contributionsFantastic experience! We were given a guided tour of the area, after which we were allowed to visit the puppies and the cats. It's clear that the animals are well and taken care of (the dogs have their own pool!⭐️). If you are in Phuket, it is a definite recommendation to take a trip here, and hear everything they do for the street dogs and cats in Thailand🫶🏼Dear sarahgtj, Thank you for visiting Soi Dog Foundation, and leaving a review. The swimming pool was gifted to Soi Dog by one very kind donor. It is the perfect space for the dogs to cool down, play and exercise with our volunteers on hot days! Thank you for encouraging others to visit, so we can educate more people about the many ways Soi Dog are reducing the suffering of dogs and cats in Thailand, and other parts of Asia. - Georgina HOttawa, Canada11 contributionsExcellent Tour of Sou Dog FoundationThe tour is great! Perfect for families and adults. There is a chance to spend time petting both cats and dogs. It is Heartening to see how both dogs and cats are rescued. Operations, sterilization, adoption save lives of these abandoned animals. It has reduced stray dogs in Phuket tenfold. In Bangkok dogs are rescued and neutered. Please consider donating to this wonderful organization. In addition, they work with advocates in Thailand and South Korea to ban dog meat trade. Vietnam tortures then butchers dogs they raise in their homes.Dear georginah14, Thank you for visiting us at Soi Dog Foundation, and the excellent feedback. Our resident dogs and cats love to welcome our visitors! We are pleased to hear that you learnt about the many ways Soi Dog are helping dogs and cats in Thailand, as well as other parts of Asia. Currently Soi Dog are working towards putting an end to the dog and cat meat trade in Vietnam and the Philippines, and may expand to other countries in the future. Thank you for encouraging others to visit and support Soi Dog, so we can continue to help more dogs and cats in need. - Sarah PChesterfield, United Kingdom53 contributionsAn absolute must when visiting Phuket!!!A must see when visiting Phuket, witness the incredible work all these people do to save the dogs of Thailand. I would have stayed longer to volunteer and walk the dogs if I could. They have over 1900 dogs in their care, 20 vets, 400 staff and all the dogs look comfortable and so well looked after. Incredible testiment to the work John Dalley and his team have done since 2003. You get a walk around the sanctuary and the best part you get to play with the puppies. Spread the word and help raise their profile!!Dear Sarah, Thank you for visiting Soi Dog Foundation and the excellent review. As well as over 20 vets working here at the shelter in Phuket, we have teams of vets who do mobile clinics in other parts of Thailand, to reduce overpopulation and suffering in other areas. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed spending time with the puppies, they love to give our visitors a warm welcome! As well as over 1,400 dogs being cared for by Soi Dog, there are also over 400 cats here at the shelter. All of them are safe and well looked after, while waiting for potential adoptions into loving homes. We hope to welcome you back as a volunteer one day! - CDConseconConsecon, Canada2 contributionsMy experience at Soi Dog Sanctuary in Thailand.I have supported Soi Dog for 20 yrs. I was able to visit Soi Dog yesterday. Even though I've seen many photos of the dogs, cats, staff and facilities I was was surprised when I got there. The facility was so clean, organized and well run. The cats and dogs were healthy with many opportunities to enrich there lives. I was surprised to learn that their animal hospital is the biggest in S.E. Asia. I enjoyed my visit very much.Dear CDConsecon, Thank you for visiting Soi Dog Foundation, and the excellent feedback. We are so pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your visit, and had a positive experience. Thank you so much for kindly supporting Soi Dog since the beginning. We could not continue to help so many dogs and cats in need without kind people like you. We booked a full day tour and this was the first stop, arriving over an hour early we were greeted by Silvia who advised us that the tours happen 3 times a day and that it was not uncommon for tour operators to drop visitors off way too early, we were welcome to grab a coffee and wait though for the tour to start.
There were constant streams of volunteers and visitors arriving but in this chaos was structured organisation.
Silvia gave us a tour at the allotted time and Imparted her knowledge of how the foundations started, where the dog’s came from, how they were treated, assessed and what happened to them afterwards.
The dogs and cats welfare are evidently paramount at all times. They do not indulge people’s curiosity to see animals where they fear it may cause the animals distress which was so refreshing to hear.
It was heartwarming to see the amount of volunteers who help walk and socialise with the dogs. The kennels and runs were well designed and spacious and dogs are chosen carefully before being placed in a run to ensure the safety for all dogs in the same run.
Elderly dogs are given peace and quiet away from visitors to live out their last days in comfort and with dignity.
The tour ended in the puppy pen and what a treat that was. Make sure you don’t wear anything smart on this trip, I thought the puppies were going to rip my dress to shreds as they grabbed anything they could, as puppies do, my hair, my bracelet and one was chewing my watch strap while another distracted me with cuddles! I found one I could gladly have adopted but can’t due to NZ restrictions so we are going to check out the animals that we can sponsor instead.
This is an incredible foundation and I can’t stress enough how worthy of a donation it is.
They return to areas to check on unsterilised animals that may have been missed last time and have succeeded in reducing the dog population down by a staggering figure of thousands.
It’s a great idea to allow the public to visit and see the great work being done and results in people returning to volunteer, donate or fundraiser in their home country.
I forgot to ask what the walk of love was but a tear jerking idea non the less.
I think this part of our day trip eclipsed James Bond Island that we did later!

Dear travelavecmonamie,
Wow, where do we begin to thank you for such a thorough and wonderful review?
You covered everything with such warmth - thank you so much.
We pride ourselves on the many subjects you have mentioned but we never neglect the fact that this is all only possible thanks to donations from caring members of the public and supporters of the foundation. Without them, and you, none if it would be possible.
You made it out of the puppy run alive - that's no mean feat! Such little monsters but so much fun.
Very pleased to hear that we eclipsed James Bond Island! Not many can outshine 007 !
Such a shame we cannot adopt to NZ but we would be so grateful of your sponsorship, should you decide to do so - a great way to be involved and continue to support the work we do.
Thank you.

On arrival you are given a very informative talk about the couple who started the rescue centre, the structure and aim of the rescue centre and also on the situations faced by many of the unfortunate animals who are there and the backgrounds of how they have ended up there. This place is a must if you are a dog / cat lover. The main thing that stuck out to me about this rescue is how immaculately clean it is. Seriously, this place is kept spotless by the staff and the animals are given water regularly which is required in the heat. Each pen has its own dedicated staff member throughout the day apart from lunch time to keep the pen clean, watered and calm. When you walk the dogs you see that the staff have many existing relationships with the animals who bound over to them with nothing but love in their eyes. This place is a credit to Thailand along with its people. The fact that they see the bigger picture of the problem and castrate strays and people’s pets at no charge is another great factor. In the current time you may not be able to visit this place due to coronavirus but please if you do one thing take my word for how amazing it is and make a donation. Give them a follow on social media if not as this doesn’t cost a penny.

Dear Rachbbbb,
Thank you so much for leaving such a lovely review.
We're so pleased you had a great time and went away with a great impression of how we run the sanctuary here.
Hygiene is vital and we're also pleased that you share with us the knowledge of the bigger picture and the importance of spay and neuter!
Hope to see you again at Soi Dog one day!
Thank you and take care.

We heard about this place on social media and Phuket Airport the tv show. It took us an hour to get here from Phuket and we arrived for the 11am tour from Yaa who was a lovely lady. She showed us around the fantastic facilities and explained the history of the foundation and Gill and John’s story - what fantastic people they are. I did shed a tear seeing some of the 3 legged dogs and hearing about the dog meat trade but still, there is hope! We also got to play with the gorgeous puppies after! There is no fee to get in but we made a donation and bought a drink which goes towards the funding. Thank you to everyone working here you are fantastic ❤️

Went during the rainy period of 30th of Sept 2022. One of the best part of my whole trip in Phuket.
A very calm and tranquil location for animals whom are in need of recuperation and relaxation. My wonderful guide Ms Jenny who is just 7 months into her job was able to explain in detail of every single animal’s story and remember their names to tell me. Even with 3 clinics/ hospitals, they are still brimming with patients and would very much require assistance from those who can provide.
The animals are housed very safely as their temperaments are well understood by their volunteers and staff making it easy for them to mingle and relax in their habitat.
I recommend that you contact Soi Dog either through or social media before going as they will be able to provide you with contacts of people who can bring you from the airport to Soi Dog Foundation. As this was my first part of the trip, I had engaged help this way.
One thing I hope is that they can have more variety in their merchandises and crafts, so that I can spend more in this way to support them too.
In whole, I feel that every human being that has a thought to help and support animals worldwide, should visit the Soi Dog Foundation during their trip in Phuket.

Dear Bloodroses,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and the wonderful review.
Every resident cat and dog here has a unique story of their own, and Jenny loves to share some of these with our visitors.
Although we currently have about 1,700 animals at the shelter, each one is treated as an individual to ensure their needs are met every day.
We appreciate your feedback regarding the merchandise. If you look online there is even more choice available, as some of the stock is easier to source and supply in other countries.
We hope you can visit again one day!
Best wishes.

Joined the 9:30 am tour taken by Silvia who is dedicated to providing the best care to the rescued dogs and cats. She was super informative and gave us a history and run down of current care for the dogs and cats. The site is spotless and the animals very well cared for. İt was good to see so many willing, enthusiastic volunteers in our tour. We entered the puppy enclosure where the puppies were unbelievably excited and very cute and the spent time with the cats, which to be honest, are my first love and I would have loved to have taken them all home. All too soon our taxi came to collect us and after a quick chat with Silvia, the purchase of a souvenir t-shirt and donation given, we came away very impressed by what we had seen. We will continue to support Soi Dog via the website and encourage everyone to visit and help this amazing good cause however they can. Grateful thanks to Silvia and the team at Soi Dog.

Hi tazzat7,
Thanks You so much for this lovely review,
Sounds like you had a fab time indeed. Will let Silvia know how much you enjoyed the tour.
The rest of the staff as well as our weekly/monthly volunteers are dedicated to making sure the dogs and cats are looked after to the best of our ability with not just food, water and veterinary support but, also emotionally with lots of love and behaviour support if needed because some of them come from horrific backgrounds.
It is also great, you had time to spend with the pups and kitties who are always welcoming attention from visitors and volunteers. Please continue to follow their journey via our social media channels too.
Thank you for spreading word about Soi Dog.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

We took part in a guided tour at SoiDog and we sadly had not the possibility for volunteering. At the end of the tour we all were allowed to go to the puppies and this feeling standing between 20 puppies all wanna cuddle you is totally amazing. When you are there in Phuket you need to take this experience; it‘s unique.
The atmosphere is fullfilled with the passion of all the people working there and you immediately slip into this passion. Within a few minutes you feel part of this big family and you can help with even very small things; they will thank you a lot!

Hi Jogofortravel,
Thank You for leaving us this review and sharing your experience with everyone out there.
It is lovely to hear that you enjoyed your time at our shelter in Phuket and you felt part of the bigger cause that Soi Dog Foundation stands for.
It is a shame you were not here for longer to to volunteer but, to ensure that both the dogs and the volunteers get the most out of a volunteer, we need volunteers to stay with us for at least 2 full days.
But, hopefully you will be back next time for longer you can sign up to be a volunteer.
Thank YOU for taking the time to visit us. It means so much to all of us.

My partner and I found this a really fulfilling and eye-opening experience.
Soi Dog Foundation is doing incredible work to improve the lives of stray and unwanted dogs (and also cats) in Phuket. The staff seemed very devoted to their work and were incredibly comprehensive in explaining the scale of the issue of stray animals and the awful associated activities that they strive to protect them from (dog meat trade, mutilation, cultural killing), as well as all aspects of the animals’ lives before and in their care.
The tour was great and it was lovely to play with puppies and cats but the most important thing was that the facility was never presented as a “paradise” for animals, rather a crucial place of refuge for animals in need.
Despite the urgent need for financial support, we were never hassled for money. However, we left a cash donation and my partner is going to sponsor a dog. Would happily recommend to others visiting Phuket to swing by and support their work

Dear 25moriartyK,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and leaving such great feedback.
It is important that people see for themselves that the shelter is not a play park for the animals, and that we can only accommodate those who are too vulnerable to survive in the community. We hope to find loving homes for as many of the animals as possible, so we can continue to help even more.
We really appreciate your generous donation, and sponsoring one of our dogs. Soi Dog would not be able to continue to do such important work without kind people like yourselves!
Best wishes.

Finally got to visit this wonderful place today. Had followed on social media for last couple of years and to meet the wonderful people who care so much for these animals was great. Went on tour around centre and learnt about the origins of it, interacted with puppies and cats and got to meet some of the dogs we had followed the progress off. Highly recommend visiting and will definitely be going back and volunteering my time to help this worthy cause.

Hi katrinac944,
We are so happy to hear that you finally got the chance to visit us, especially if you have been following our work for a while online. Nothing beats a visit and seeing it for yourself.
It is great you met some of our staff and volunteers AND met some of the animals too. We are sure the kitties and the puppies all enjoyed your company as much you did theirs.
We hope you come back and maybe even volunteer, one day?
Thanks so much for continuing to be amazing supporters from far.
Safe travels.

Landed up at 2.20 PM today, and met with a young Gentleman, named, Owen, tour times I believe are once in the morning and once at 1.30 PM, but Owen was kind enough to show me around, we walked different sections of the facility for over an hour. Its beautiful to see the founders vision and their ability to raise funding privately to shelter between 600-900 dogs. Its amazing, seeing the Vet clinic from the outside and the different areas for these stray/abandoned dogs to have some R&R. Owen said due to the Pandemic they were short handed and between 4 volunteers they rotated walking the dogs one at a time, which I found astounding. Their commitment and ability to be empathetic and work with these unspoken for little beings. Highly recommend going for a visit, to see a state of the art facility for the sick and homeless dogs. It was spotless clean and so many people working there, for dogs and cats of all forms shapes and sizes. I was tempted at adopting one of the puppies, however cause I live in a condo, the place doesn't allow pets, so unable to. Would just like to say, what a great job these volunteers are doing, you could see the passion, kindness and generosity in Owens eyes. He's been working there for 2 years plus and seems to be doing a great job, The only minus being, I went all the way from Chalong, so it was a good 50-60 KM to get there and if you follow the main road, due to overgrown bushes, you might actually miss the sign for the turn off from the highway. I got a little lost but found my way at the end. Would like to commend the work the Likes of Owen does and wish Soi Dog an ability to help and reach out more. There were so many fun facts I didn't know about, so was highly educational, good for kids to journey through. Once again, great job guys ! Keep up the good work !

A team of dedicated folk and a tonne of volunteers doing a tremendous job to give quality of life to our beautiful friends. It's a tough place to visit for I didn't want to leave all the lovely kitties and pups. But I guess you can do so knowing these lovely animals are safe here. Hats off to the Soi Dog Foundation may you get the recognition you truly deserve.

Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to leave this lovely review.
The dogs and cats are in safe hands and also looking for homes - we share your feeling of not wanting to leave without one!
Please come if you're ever in Phuket again!
Kind regards

Hi there - we want to pop in and see the work you do but we will likely only have 1.5 hours before we fly as you don’t open until 9 - you are not far from the airport and we are staying on the other side of Phuket. Will that be long enough?

Hi, is it possible to visit Soi Dogs to see all the dogs and see how it all works?
I am a strong supporter of Soi Dogs and would be delighted to be able to visit someday.

I've no idea.
Soi dog foundation is very well run.
If dogs need rabies shots I'm sure they would give them

Hello, does anyone know anything about a group called 'Dog Meat Survivor' or 'Dog Meat Savior?' (They have used both names, and they called themselves the 'Humane Society' for a short time. They don't reply to my queries, and I find their customer service phone contact number rather odd. I worry some groups are preying on people who want to help save these dogs and simply scamming people out of their donations. I've contacted other animal welfare groups with this question. No one has responded. Can anyone shed any light on any of these groups?

Thanks so much for your amazing work. Just wondering if you need things like dog collars or leads?

Hi Sebastian,
And sorry for the late reply!
We are always in need of a variety of items. We have over 1,000 dogs and 350 cats, so things like leads, toys and poo bags are always very much appreciated!
You can find a full wish list of items on the Soi Dog website under 'How You Can Help > Donate Supplies'.
Thanks so much!

I am wondering, when one US dollar is worth 30 baht why 29 us dollars only cares for one dog for one month? Seem like the exchange rate would go further to care for the animals.
Written 4 January 2021
Dear Robin,
$29 is the amount to sponsor a dog here at Soi Dog Foundation. For this, you receive regular updates throughout the year from your sponsor dog, including photos and updates. The information on the sponsor page on our website also states that your monthly subscription fee also goes not only towards your sponsor dog but also towards helping other animals under the care of Soi Dog.
We hope this helps!
Many thanks.

I am wondering who pays the air fares (& a volunteer escorting animal?) for the many (dogs) that are adopted by Canadians & USA people. I know they are fantastic animal parents! But this ads alot to the costs of adoption. Have been doing alot of reading re your rescue and considering a bequest in my will when I rewrite it shortly. Keep up your great work. You obviously do an amazing job - with lots .... & lots .... of free spay/neutering. The only way we are going to make any dent in the unwanted/homeless/stray animal problem the world over. Not enough (PRIVATE VETS) perform enough of these services - FOR FREE (or just a few $$$ to cover medications/equipment used.) Best wishes to you all. Victoria Pinkerton.

Dear Victoria,
Firstly, thank you so much for considering Soi Dog in your legacy plans. This is a truly wonderful gesture.
And, to answer your question about flight volunteers and adopted animals - The travel costs of animals from Soi Dog and travelling overseas are covered by the adopter. This includes the excess baggage fee that the animals travel under, the travel crate, and any administrative fees ( dictated by the airline and import/export authorities). The costs associated with the flight volunteer (airline tickets etc) are covered by the flight volunteer themselves. We hope this helps! Many thanks.

Who pays for all the flights for animals and does a volunteer escort each animal? I understand an animal could not be sent on such a long flight (typically Thailand to USA or Canada) alone - particularly an animal who has known ill-treatment and has 'issues' with people - poor little things. It is wonderful you have so many international odopters & seem to place so many dogs to Canada etc. Bless you all for the work you do in saving & loving so many animals. I am certainly seriously considering a bequest in my will to Soi Dog foundation.

I think you would get a more informed response if you were to address the question directly to the foundation. And wonderful thought re: your Will!
