- xx y35 contributionsSmaller size ChawengIt’s similar as Chaweng beach but shorter . Sand and wave and color of the water are decent . You could think it’s a smaller size Chaweng beach but with also a smaller size shopping area along the main street.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 December 2023

There were neither sunbeds nor any water sports. The shacks serving drinks and food were little far. The only good thing about this beach was, it was very quite unlike Chewang.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 February 2024
- Regina FGalway, Ireland48 contributionsLong beach with lots of places to stopA lovely beach walk, with plenty of restaurants dotted up and down it. It was very windy while we were there so we didn't go swimming in the water but wandering up the beach was pleasant. I will say that the hackers that walk up and down the beach can be a bit pushy though, we had the same person pass us a few times & each time they tried to sell us something we didn't want or need.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2024
- BKKMike01Bangkok, Thailand3 contributionsMy favorite beach on Koh SamuiLamai Beach is one of my favorites on the island. I stayed at an older resort down by the rocks. (Near the grandmother and grandfather rocks.) The oil previously reported at the beach is now gone. The first few days I didn't notice any garbage at the beach at all, but this morning I did notice quite a few plastic bottles. I don't blame the resorts. I blame the carelessness of humans in general. I like Lamai Beach because it's not as loud as Chaweng, but there are still lots of restaurants and things to do. The beach is very beautiful and not overcrowded. I'll return again next year for sure.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 April 2024

Quite, long and reach of sand beach, in the south part of the island! Little of coconut trees shade around.Plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes. Deep water, waves from middle day... Visit afternoon for the best sunset views...

The beach has very soft beautiful sand with lovely trees as a backdrop for excellent pictures and shade. There are plenty off bars and restaurants to use with free sun-beds as long as you have drinks etc. There was a little litter where the rough sea had washed it up but the local restaurant cleans it up as fast as they can so the beach is soon perfect. I would recommend to all. Oh and you can have massages for very reasonable prices as you chill . What’s not to like....

If you are looking for the idyllic beach and palm trees, don't go here. The amount of rubbish on the beach ruins any pleasure that you might find. I don't know if this is just because it is the rainy season, but none of the hoteliers or café owners care what you have to look at. Sit in a café or restaurant on the beach front and you will have 10ft of rubbish in front of you before you get to the sand and sea. Lovely people and food, but someone really needs to get a grip on cleaning their sections of beach.

Lamai Beach stretches for several km on Koh Samui's east coat. Lots of hotels and restaurants face up on the beach which is made of very course large sand grains. Very painful to walk on for great distances. You can walk almost the full length - there is the occasional small outlet you need to cross. The water can be rough - but in lost of places there is a sand bar just off shore so you can walk out a far way.

A good long beach for walking or a run, undulating for the most part, the northern area and southern parts are quieter than the central town section which has the bars clubs and music.
Waves aren't as high on the northern part of the beach making swimming easier.
Jet skis for hire.

We have been in Lamai many times.
Always enjoyed the beach and pretty clear water.
Ok the weather was windy and big waves but the amount of rubbish, wood, plastics on the beach are not very attractive..... I hope that now Thailand is reopening the resorts on Lamai beach take their responsibility and organize clean ups otherwise the pool villa’s will be the big winners instead of the beach resorts......

This is the second time we have visited lamai beach. Last time we came was in June 2019. I noticed this time that in February the seas are rougher and that caused lots of debris on the beach. I went round myself picking up 3 bags of plastic and glass bottles plus other horrid things like babies nappies. I feel like every bar/hotel should clean their area of beach as it is very off putting. I even saw someone burying debris in the sand instead of removing it! Unbelievable. The beach would be beautiful with a little care and attention. You have to bear in mind that it has been closed down for 2 years so should be cleaner than it is.

Gorgeous beaches. But, Samui and Phuket feel like an abandoned waste site right now. They are an astonishing sight. TAT talks about the bustling Lamai and Chaweng areas? They look like post Apocalypse bomb zones, due to a stunningly inept lack of government action. One step away from Chernobyl. Come and see a booked down, abandoned, trashy, burnt out wasteland.

I first went to Koh Samui 40 years ago and have been going back now and again ever since, usually staying on Lamai. It was with huge sadness to see the state of this beach that was once so lovely. In all my travels, it is without compare, as the dirtiest beach I've ever set foot on. My wife and I arrived and decided to walk up the beach and I couldn't believe what I saw, in a 1 km stretch, there must have been the best part of a dozen discarded fishing nets and literally thousands of pieces of plastic, you couldn't go a meter without another piece of plastic, bottles and bags and other rubbish. We were in Krabi two weeks ago and the difference is absolutely staggering, the beach at Krabi is clean, people swimming all the time and lying on the beach. For the life of me I can't understand why they don't just clean the beach, it wouldn't take that long you could run a tractor up the beach and get the vast majority of the trash in a day. As for the other aspects of the area, there are a lot of places closed but still plenty of places to eat good food and shop.

At this time in March 20121 are the large long grainy patches on the water along the Lamai beach shore stemming from sewerage? Unhealthy to swim.

I was informed that heavy seas at this time churn up the bottom layer of the sea and make the littorals water very cloudy. On the other hand the masseuse said this kind of water damages the skin

Which is the best smooth sand beach where kids can play and the adults can lounge around ?
Written 24 October 2019
Lamai Bech near ”sexy stones” There is also Exelent restaurant with French owner. Not the cheapest but good, free sun lounges right on the beach. Search for Baopab restaurant in Lamai Beach area. Great beach not so much glass because I dive and collect one week in July 2019.

Many thanks

I am currently sitting on lamai beach and i fail to see the beauty described in some reviews. Where you drunk when you wrote this? All i can see on lami beach is rubbish, dirt and washed up plastic

Kerry - you obviously have a knack of attracting negative experiences in life. I take exception to the ridiculous question. Perhaps you need to stay in Glasgow and leave Thailand to people who can see the positives in life. "Books in the running brooks, sermons in stones and good in everything"!

Are there vendors where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas
Written 14 September 2018
Hi, our resort was on the beach and there was plenty of umbrellas and loungers avail.(no cost)
All the resorts had similar along the beach. There are acess points from the road to the hotels and It didn't seem To matter where anyone was sitting for the day.

I'm thinking of going to Thailand in July with my kids, aged 12 and 13 (female). I'm a sole parent and wanted a female perspective on personal safety while you were there.
Many thanks,

Hi,
I am a single parent too and have booked to go in August with my 14 year old daughter. We will have a few days in Bangkok and then fly to Koh Samui for 12 days. I am hoping to use airbnb's, and I am really looking forward to the trip. I have been to Bali and Singapore and never felt threatened or vulnerable.
