If you want to experience Northern Thai food served in a traditional Khantoke way and setting, this is probably one of the best ways of doing so in Chiang Mai.
Located at the edge of the city, the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center is only 5 mins. from the center of Chiang Mai. A very popular attraction to foreigners, this center offers dinner with cultural (hill tribe dances) show. "Khantoke Dinner" as more popularly known is a way of serving food using a red pedestal tray and has various Northern Thai food in it. You can eat either using spoon and fork or the traditional way of just using your bare hands.
Book early (as told by our booking agent) if you prefer seats on the floor (open area and closer to the show). We decided to take the floor seating and I must say it is quite an experience. Table seating are also available. Suggest to arrive between 7-7:15 pm to take pictures and have enough time to eat before the start of the show.
First part of the show (approx 1 hr) starts at 8pm and the second part of the show is done in an enclosed amphitheater.
Good value for money. Good night out for everyone or family with children 4yrs and older. Advance reservation, highly recommended.

Having just watched the show last night, all i can say is its fantastic value for money(370 baht),we were picked up by our booking agent, and taken to the ouskirt of chiang mai town, where the dinner is held, the complex is covered in red carpet, and they ask you to leave your shoes at reception, with no more than 5 minutes of us sitting down, we were brought out a huge spread of food, as well as our drinks(these cost extra) Then the first show starts, lots of traditional thai dance and knife dancers etc, during the show , your desert of fresh frruit and rice cakes with coffee is served, after this show ends your ushered to another dance hall to watch another show ,set of traditional tribal dances etc , all in all a very good evening, fantastic photo oppotunitys, as well as a great ambiance 10/10

We heard great things about the khantoke dinner and show at the Old Chiangmai Cultural Centre so we were looking forward to this experience since we arrived in Chiang Mai...
The dinner service was great. Our servers were prompt and very pleasant. The performances were also quite beautiful...Sure, some of the performers looked bored and disenchanted, but this seemed to reflect the attitude of the audience - many of which kept on talking when the announcer was at the centre of the stage trying to explain the dances. We had hoped that this night would be an educating (as well as an entertaining) experience, so it was disappointing that we could not understand the content of each performance. We realized (too late) that there was a program for the show, but none of the staff had pointed it out at the beginning of the show (to us or to many of the other guests)....
The selection of food was also average...about a third of the food was deep-fried and did not seem representative of the variety of food in Northern Thailand. We had much better food and more colourful flavours during our 3-day homestay experience with one of the villages. Also, drinks were not included and the price for a small bottle of water was 30B...
But the most disappointing part was our seating...We had arrived at the cultural centre 5 hours earlier to check ticket prices and make reservations. We really wanted good seats and since we were staying in Chiang Mai for a longer period of time, we could be more flexible. Unfortunately, the person who made our reservations did not tell us that we would be getting seats way at the back and right behind the path that all the servers would take in order to get food to the guests... This meant that our view of the performances was obstructed every 30 seconds.
So if you're only looking for a fancy dining experience and you're willing to pay at least 500B, then you're set...But I would not recommend this activity if you're looking to learn more about the different cultures in northern Thailand, or if you want to experience a khantoke dinner that the villagers would normally eat.

There are about five of six places in Chiang Mai you can choose to experience a Khantoke Dinner and traditional dancing. I chose the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre (OCMCC) based on reviews I had read and the fact that it was not organised at a hotel – so it was pot luck. Only later did I discover that OCMCC had been in the business for at least 40 years, so they must be doing something right.
Khantoke dinner is a chance to savour authentic Northern Thai food served in small round bowls (khans) from low tables (tokes). You also get to sit on the floor against triangular cushions, but I felt a little more comfortable eating at a table. The food is delicious, and will keep coming until you can’t eat any more. The sticky rice was to die for!
While satisfying my appetite, a show on a stage in the centre of the large restaurant area commenced. Musicians sat behind a thin curtain from which the graceful dancers appeared. It was wonderful to watch their dainty yet precise movements as the glided across the stage. I was particularly impressed with a young man performing a sword dance – a bit dangerous I thought, but very cleverly and professionally delivered. Prior to the beginning of each performance, a description of the dance and its meaning was provided by one of the young dancers which certainly helped to put it into context. At the end of the dance routines, diners were encouraged to join the dancers on stage.
Most of us moved from the restaurant to a small outside night market where some of the hill tribes were displaying their wares, then across to a small open theatre where we were entertained with dancing by the hill tribes from young children upwards in some elaborate costumes. It was great to see the families involved, and they were obviously enjoying themselves.
And I enjoyed myself too. The whole evening was relatively inexpensive (if you moderated your drinking) and was just about the right length of time – around 2.5 hours. If you’d like to taste some tradition in food and music and dance, this evening at the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre is well worth adding to your itinerary.

The dances were stiff and tired. The food was edible, but with so much great food out there it was a disappointment. While it was fun to sit on the floor in a more traditional Thai dinner manner, it was disappointing that throughout the show there was a constant traffic of people coming in, ordering more food, and generally standing in front of our seats. The theater was loud with chatter and clatter making it difficult to hear the music as well. If you are looking for a traditional dance show, I would recommend finding a place that puts that first, as opposed to attempting to be too many things.

My husband and I wanted to do something different on our last day in Chiang Mai. We had a phenomenal time at the khantoke dinner show at the Old Chiangmai Cultural Center. One thing I would recommend is that before you do this dinner show, you should visit the Lanna Folk Museum, where you can get a preview of some of the stuff you're going to eat, see, and watch.
When you go inside, you sit down on the floor where you have a "table set" set up; you eat on the floor, in traditional Lanna style. The entertainment dining hall is air conditioned now (I take it that it wasn't before), and was very comfortable to sit in. While you sit and eat, they play live music in the background, providing a great atmosphere.
The food was good - there was a pumpkin curry thing, some beef thing, fried chicken, stir-fry vegetables, something that resembled pork rinds, and pumpkin fries. The staff refilled each dish as we ate, so it was basically a buffet. My husband and I were stuffed afterwards, and the food was fresh and delicious! The only gripe that I had is that we HAD to buy a drink, and weren't permitted to drink the water that we had brought. They said it would cost 100 THB for us to drink the water we brought as "outside food and drink," so we just sucked it up and paid 60 THB for two water bottles. Small price to pay, but given that you get this gigantic dinner and a show for the equivalent of $23/person, that's not too bad at all.
Dancing show was wonderful. I learned a lot, and it was fascinating to watch. The only thing is that make sure you get one of the paper pamphlets before you walk in - the A/V system isn't that clear, so it's kind of hard to understand the lady (i.e. impossible) when she is announcing which dance is going to take place next. If you can pick up a few words and find the dance on the paper, you're good.

My husband and I are both sitting here shocked that this venue has such great reviews.
There were many things about this show that were very nice. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was pretty good and the service was excellent. It was also really nice that they sent a bus to pick us up and drop us off.
That being said, I'm not sure if we just came on an off night, but all of the dances seemed very repetitive and were all very slow. We kept waiting for it to pick up, or get more interesting, but it really never did. Once they moved us out of the dance arena and into the main courtyard for the second half of the show, it continued with the same slow beat and different dancers pretty much just walking around in a circle wearing different costumes. The majority of the guests got up and went to their buses early.
This is by no means a reflection on our opinion of Thai culture, as we have been having a fantastic trip and love Thailand. But this was not money or time well spent.

Booked thru our hotel, The Rim Resort at 4pm on 9th February 2015. Was told to be in the lobby from 6.45-7pm.
However. at 7.15pm, their pick up was no where to be seen. Asked our Reception to call and the Cultural Centre lady said they would be here in another 10mins or so.
Suspected that they had forgotten all about our booking, and feeling famished, we cancelled the booking.
This had spoilt an otherwise lovely evening. As a Tripadvisor Top Contributor, this was our first encounter with a no show - definitely not recommended !!!

We must apologize for taking so long to respond to your review. We have only just figured out how to use our page here on trip advisor, being said we would like to use this opportunity to explain what had happened the night you had made reservations to come have the khantoke dinner with us. During the month of February, we had experienced an overload of tourists due to the upcoming Chinese New year.
Your reservation had been made and seating arragements as well, our driver was in fact on route to go pick you up but with the tremendous traffic that night we had arranged for another driver to go pick you up instead in hopes that it would be faster but it had failed.
The Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center would like to apologize for the misunderstanding once again and hope that next time if you are ever in Chiang Mai, you are willing to give us the opportunity to show you true northern Thai hospitality. We are always welcome to serve you.

Made (late) reservations thru the hotel. The lady at the main entrance did not have the reservation but this was promptly resolved when at the payment counter.
Dinner is paid for in advance before being seated. Drinks are not included in the cost, and have to be separately purchased. They did not ask for drinks order, so no drinks for quite a while at the beginning. Food was pretty basic - not exceptionally tasty. It was replenishable but it was the same 6 or 7 varieties (of which I was keen on only 3).
Dance show was performed halfway thru the dinner. Was seated quite far away, so didn't pay too much attention. Wasn't too exciting a show, except perhaps for the guy who performed with swords.
Girls in hill tribe costumes would come around to take pictures with you, and thereafter sell the pics.
After dinner in the enclosed hall, they would invite you to an outdoor (roofed) area for some more cultural performances by hill tribes people. These are not professionals, but are ordinary people (young and old) who perform folk dances and on traditional musical instruments. Gives a glimpse into 'real' indigenous Thai (lanna) enjoyment.
A number of stalls sell handicraft, which are pretty nice and affordable.

Hi, was wondering if anyone knows any good tours for this attraction we could use to book online? (Ie: Provides transportation to the centre and if possible, has an English speaking guide but its not a necessity) Also a bit confused about the pricing for the khantoke dinner as I've seen the price being quoted from 300 Baht to 1000 Baht. Is there an approximate time as to what time it ends and if there are any transportation services there? (Assuming that I do not choose to have a transportation-included tour)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

i travel to Thailand often and without any doubt the best prices for all sorts of tours with or without transport are to be found on Hotels2Thailand - they are fantastic - i booked this show/dinner through them Nov '17 with transport as well as other entrance tickets etc. if you need to change a date they change it no fee involved and all done quickly and efficiently and driver arrives on time to collect you - very professional and best ticket prices

Hello!
The Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center can easily accommodate to your needs as they actually have a vegetarian option that is also completely vegan. It is called the "Jae" option, although because in Thailand "Jae" food is also linked with religion the tastes are not very strong or extremely fragrant unlike normal Thai food and vegan/vegetarian food in the west.
As for our shows, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the Khon dance? If it is the traditional Thai dance with the masks, that is not one we have at our dinner and show service as our main focus is the Lanna tradition.
Hope this helps!

Is this what they call a Khantoke dinner? I'm curious if there were Karen Hill tribe women who participated in the show. I want to see a long neck woman from the tribe. There is a Baan Tong Luang Eco-agricultural village 30 miles from Chiang Mai where we can see different tribes short of going all the way to where the Karen Hill Tribe are concentrated. I can skip Baan Tong Luang (save me time) if I see at least one Karen Hill tribe woman as I'm curious about how they got their neck so long with the necklace holding it in place. Thank you.

I agree with the other people that have made comments. If you want to see the long neck, you won't see them at the Old Cultural Centre show. I have been to the eco village, North of Chiang Mai, and you can even talk to the different tribes people, including the long neck, in what I found to be a relaxed way. There is also a school and a church there, which are also interesting to see too. They speak English there, and you can also see and put on the actual necklace too.
