About
Chiangmai Elephant Home is an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project, located in a village surrounded by mountains and a national park nearby. We have talked with the elephant carers (Mahout) and invited them to join our project. Our special project purpose to take the chain and saddle off of the elephants, like some projects of Elephants nature park. They are our inspiration. All elephants care takers and owner agree to take a saddle off which is a good sign and good start for the elephant welfare here. No more being ridden and treat them with respect. We try to do all the best we can for the elephants, elephants care takers, elephants owner and community here. Therefore we do not agree in ELEPHANT RIDING and ELEPHANT PERFORMANCES. In contrast visitors can observe the elephants in nature. We aim to provide a better life for the elephants, secure environment for them to roam free.

I had an incredible experience at the elephant sanctuary. Feeding the elephants and then giving them a bath was an absolute delight. Watching these gentle giants up close was truly breathtaking. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves animals and wants to spend time with them ethically. Our tour guide, Te, was fantastic. He provided us with all the information about the elephants and their behavior, making the experience even more enriching. Overall, it was a memorable and wonderful experience.

It was mindblowing, still getting my head around that afternoon. Te was our guide, he was more then helpfull and knowledgeable. We had the luxury off spending our afternoon there with just a group off 4, so we got all the attention and guidance we needed from the sweetest tourguide ever:)
It also ment we got all the attention from the elephants...
It was so intense, we fed them, scrubbed them down with a mud bath, had a swim all togheter after that. Full hands on experience, and i have to say the trainers were so good with the critters, we never felt onsafe or anything, they know what there doing and it showed in our experience. The elephants where really easy going.
Eternally gratefull for that wonderfull day

This was the best tour ever. Our guide Sammy was very knowledgeable and funny. There were only 4 of us on the tour and although other groups were there, they left before us and we had a lot of time to watch the elephants in there natural environment ,we also went in the river and gave them a mud bath then rinsed them off. It was an absolutely magical experience.10 out of 10 would 100% recommend. Thank you Sammy you were great 😃👍

We had the funniest guide: Sammy. Would definitely recommend this elephant sanctuary. There were an 8 month old baby elephant. She was playing and running around which means she isn’t afraid of the people taking care of her. That’s when I knew it was a great place. Also I forgot some expensive headphones and it was no problem for them to send it back to the city the same day. 5/5 ⭐️

After being recommended this tour by a local near the temple and reading some reviews we went and purchased our tickets at the office in the city. From further research and speaking to other people on the trip we figured out they too had been advised by people near the temple leading us to conclude that this was in fact a set up and done multiple times. Upon later research, we actually found reviews stating that this elephant home had changed names from Chang. We cannot be sure of how accurate this is but it would make sense based on photos within reviews.

When we arrived after an hour and a half journey with a stop off we entered Chiang Mai elephant home. They gave us clothes to wear which preferably we would have rather not worn as we had to get changed into them on the muddy floor. The surroundings were nice once we had got to the table. When purchasing the tickets we were assured that there would be an English speaking tour guide - this was not the case. We couldn’t find anything out about the elephants and our questions were left unanswered. However we did see other tours taking place and their tour guides had great English so I do think we got unlucky with that aspect.

We made a vitamin snack for the elephant and took a basket of sugar canes, bananas etc. Prior to the trip, I did research that these snacks are sugary treats and shouldn’t be given in large quantities. Elephants eat a huge amount but these are the equivalent of sweets and all groups were giving them this throughout which can’t be good for them. It was amazing to see the elephants picking bamboo off the floor themselves and just watching them eat so this could be something for future tours rather than humans feeding them. They did have a baby elephant which was very cute to watch as it was running under the other elephants legs. This was a highlight for me and the others within my group and we were more than happy to just watch. The people working there and stood with the elephants were smoking.

During the feeding section, I did notice the mahouts were pulling on an elephants ear to make it move which saddened me. The same elephant had rope around one ear also which it kept hitting with its trunk showing signs of discomfort. When we asked someone with better English they said this elephant was “naughty”.

Following on from this we went to the “mud spa” - it was a puddle of their urine and poo which I feel if the elephants optionally chose to go in would be fine however they were lured in with food. Followed by the mahouts leading some elephants into the river. The elephants were being made to do these things.

I wouldn’t be going back to Chiang Mai Elephant Home or probably any others as I’m not sure elephant sanctuary’s can be wholly ethical. More research must definitely be done by the team.

The experience with Chiangmai Mai elephant home was the best thing about our trip to Thailand so far. We got to feed and bath the elephant which was very fun. It was worth the money and can strongly recommend it to others.

Probably my favorite activity i’ve ever done. A special shoutout to Sami for taking care of us. From making the elephants’ food to later feeding them and then showering them. It was just an out of this world experience for me. The hike to the waterfall was breathtaking too. If you’re in Chiang Mai this should be number 1 on your list.

Claims to be an ethical sanctuary but it is NOT. the staff were hitting them, shouting at them and dragging them by their rope around the neck. Very disappointed because the one thing I wanted to do was make sure I went to an ethical place. The website provides a happy description of the place however when we visited the staff hit the elephants and shouted at them. It was extremely upsetting and we didn’t participate in the washing the elephants as we felt too bad. The elephants seemed to be “free to roam” but they had ropes around their necks and the staff were pulling them and grabbing their skin. Very very disgusting and horrific behaviour. We paid a lot for this experience and would not recommend to anyone.!!!!! 1000% should have checked trip advisor review before because It was horrible. Please if you care about elephants do not go here. They do not enjoy human contact and the staff were slapping them just to get a picture. They seemed scared of all the human interaction. THIS IS NOT ETHICAL!!!!!!

Such a great experience to see such beautiful beings up close. The shuttle service picks you up and drops you off, and takes you through the stunning country side. The day was filled with fun activities that were all optional, no elephants or people were forced to take part. You got to prepare food for the elephants, feed them, and bathe in the river/have a water fight with them. It was a highlight of our trip. The guide, Sammie, was very upbeat, fun, and knowledgeable and provided such a unique experience. We even got to visit a nearby waterfall before heading back to town. The lunch was also 10/10 delicious!
