Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We actually saw all 5 gates by foot and by a tuk tuk tour of the city. They are all positioned by the river for extra protection and some gates have part of the brick wall still standing. They are worth a visit and photograph

Not sure why, but this is listed as Pratu Chiang Mai on Google Maps.

Part of the Old City Wall, this is one of four main gates which guarded the old city along with a moat which runs all the way around.

Great that it’s still mostly intact as it means one can get a good look at some of the cities ancient history. Whilst I wouldn’t recommend booking a special trip to see it, if your walking around the local area, it’s good to stop off and have a quick look.

Pratu Chiang Mai is located in the centre of the south side if the city wall. It was constructed on the moat by King Mangrai in 1296 when he established the city of Chiang Mai here. The gate was reconstructed twice first time in 1800’s and second time in 1900’s. Currently there is a food market here with fresh food, cooked dishes and snack, drinks and packaged food stalls. The most famous ones are Mrs. Pa’s Smoothies, Jeeup’s Coffee Build, Sticky Rice with Mango, Kanome Kroke. Every Saturday this area magically transforms into a Walking Street Market which attracts both locals and foreigners.

The Chiang Mai Gate is on the south end of the Old Town, next to the moat. Like with all the other gates, there is not much to see here. There are the brick ruins of Fort Ka-Tham, nearby on the south-east corner of the Old Town.

A better reason to visit this part of town is “Bumrung Buri Market” It opens late afternoon until late and offers all the Thai food you are looking for. Buak Hard Public Park is located at the other end of the southern moat.

Combine these little things and you have enough destinations for a nice little afternoon/evening stroll.

Although worth stopping by on a walk of the old city perimeter, it isn't worth going out of your way for. Historically noteworthy. A product of a few reconstructions over time.

This is the Southern gate of the ancient walled city. There isn’t much to see here.

The surroundings has a small park, a market and interesting shops and cafes.

Nice old wall with neat flower arrangement on the south side. It's on the south side of the city in the middle of the moat. It's best to view it from the south side as then you can see the flower beds and trimmed trees in animal shapes
