One of Bangkok’s best-kept secrets is Khlong Toey, a chaotic, sprawling food market not far from the city’s centre. It’s a travel photographer’s dream, packed with shouting market vendors offering live produce, fresh fruit and vegetables and cooked local dishes. Eye-opening and enthralling, it’s a great insight into how locals live – and to where your moo manow really comes from.

Khlong Toei was the real deal, clearly a place locals go for food, not where tourists go for useless knick-knacks. We even saw some local chefs we recognized. There's nothing glamorous about the market, but if you want to see where the locals buy their ingredients, go here. Oh and get the phad Thai from the old lady by Rama... More

My friends and I wound up here on accident. We were walking by and decided to pop in. It was really interesting to see what a true Thai market looks like. They had plenty of foods and fish for sale that I had never seen before. If you want to go off the beaten path and see something authentic, I'd... More

Arrive via Khlong Toei MRT station. Take exit, 1 turn right out of station and walk around 600 metres. Alternatively take either exit 1 or 2 out of Queen Sirikit convention centre MRT station and walk around 300 metres straight out of the station in the opposite direction to Asoke. Not for the faint hearted ferang who is unused to... More

Talat (Market) Khlong Toei is right in city centre minutes away from Terminal 21 Asoke Junction. This is vibrant market with all varieties of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables available 24/7. The market is open round the clock but the best time to go there for shopping is early morning or late night. One gets the luxury of lean traffic and... More

This is a busy working market - used by hotels, restaurants, shops and smaller market stall holders to buy everything from meat and fish to fruit and vegetables. Tourists are tolerated as long as they don't get in the way! If you buy something the price you see will be per kilo unless otherwise stated. Don't haggle - these are... More

This place is huge with anything locals need for everyday life. Meat, fish, fruit, veg, clothes, utensils. Not touristy at all and good if you want to get a flavour of local life or are looking to get produce for cooking lunch or dinner.

This is the most real market I have seen in my 3 weeks in Asia. Huge number of all sorts of vendors and smells so fresh and good. In addition there are so many fruits, vegetables and live animals. Only wish I had a kitchen.
