After reading Steve Hughson's review (as well as some forum feedback on AA and its other company, Nepal Vision Treks), I wonder what the odds are of so many people being helicoptered out due to AMS? In cases of HACE or HAPE, helicopter is certainly warranted but AMS symptoms at their onset simply require descent on foot. What is the reason for the immediate helicopter call? Are other descent options explored? Are AA's clients advised to simply stay put (and give their bodies an extra day or two to acclimatize) or if needed, simply descend on foot with the help of the porter and/or a guide? Are there kickbacks received by Nepali trekking agencies from the helicopter companies and private hospitals that treat the AMS (which of course goes away on its own upon descent)? Travel insurance companies like World Nomads, which provide coverage for high altitude, have now doubled their insurance premiums for Nepal, any specific reason for this?
