    Great Place to Stay
Kathmandu has a number of different areas and I would suggest you consider carefully where you want to stay and I will tell you what a few of them have to offer For Families and business Lalitpur is a relatively upmarket area quite new and mostly has pavements for American readers , sidewalks For people interested in the spiritual side of things Boudha with the Stupa etc is a lovely location. For lovely views staying around Swayambhanath ( Monkey Temple ) gives you a chance of seeing some mountains I though like most people chose Thamel because of the buzz it has the bars , the trekking shops , the restaurants . It’s busy but it’s still safe and well worth it in my mind.

Trendy Place, But Beware of Tourist Traps
Thamel is the commercial, tourist and busiest area in Kathmandu. The place is pretty popular with tourists thanks to the concentration of hotels, hostels and shops packed into narrow lanes. There was a time when Thamel was part of the lower budget end hippie trail, but the hotels now cater to a much, much wider range of budgets. I was staying here for a few days before my Everest Base Camp hike and it was a useful place to stock up on items I would need. As did other foreign hikers and mountaineers, who were very noticeable in the shops. If you are planning on hiking, but haven't yet booked with an agent, then there is no end of agencies here who can help. I’d already arranged my EBC tour online anyway, but I thought I would mention it since it’s cheaper if you were to make the arrangements here in Nepal. As Thamel is so popular with tourists, there are also international restaurants, shops selling souvenirs, woollen goods, and clothing, as well as shops selling telephones and internet SIM cards. Although I thought many of the shops had prices that were aimed at tourists i.e. overpriced.

Lots to See and Do Here!
This is the area where most tourists visiting Kathmandu stay. There are many hotels to choose from, ranging in various nightly rates. Also present in this neighborhood are restaurants, shops seeling all types of goods, and of course, the Durbar Square.

    The heart of Kathmandu
Probably the most vibrant part of Kathmandu. Shops, eateries and more shops. Durbar Square is the main attraction there in. However, it is comprised of narrow streets and alleys and is quite difficult to navigate. There are few sidewalks and you basically walk in the street praying that you will not get hit by a car or a scooter. Not a pleasant experience. Also It is dirty, noisy and almost impossible to navigate. However , It is a must see and do on any visit to Kathmandu but I would opt to stay in a much saner area such as Lazimpat.

    Thamel since 1977
A bit more expensive but service is excellent. Loud nightclubs can be a problem now that there are no closing hours. Kgh is my favorite for comfort and friendliness. Beautiful peaceful garden. Arabica bean is my coffee shop

Found the people to be very friendly most of them speaking some English which is great since I could not speak Nepali. The hotel was more than accommodating and a good value enjoyed walking the streets and visiting the shops friendly restaurants oh, just be sure to drink bottled water not from the water system.and once you did business with someone or met them they did not forget you when they saw you. This is an area of the city that you can walk-in easilyand find most things that you're looking for but it's also close to many of the temples and areas to visit. Felt very safe walking the streets.

I really like Pahsminas but the rip off artistgs who have stores in Thamel put me off. I am an expert in various countries at bargaining but new to Nepal several years ago I was ripped off and pissed off becasue the re isn't a tourist office to help you navigate the pashmina game. I did some research and found better prices the second time around but I still do not recommend thamel for tourists you can get much better prices in other cities. The rent is shown in the outrageous prices the vendors suggest which is insulting to tourists. I prefer Latin American and Central Asian and Vietnamese markets and European shoppes.

We were disappointed by the lack of selection for shopping in this area. Perhaps we didn’t venture far enough or to the best streets. The roads are very busy in this part of the city, specifically, so be very aware when walking near the streets.

This is one of the popular shopping area in Kathmandu and attracts most of the tourist for shopping. The market has local shops and sales complete range of product for all age including garments, shoes, jewellery, gifts wooden at reasonable price.

A must place to visit when you in Kathmandu and looking for good stuff without spending lot of money.

I came here on my first night of my visit to Kathmandu and it quickly became my regular thing. Whenever i wanted to absorb the vibrant life of the i walked here and spent hours looking around and buying what ever caught my eye. you can nearly anything you will need for your visit or trek. The people were friendly and not pushy to make you feel welcome. I always felt safe walking around the streets of Kathmandu and instantly felt a deep attachment to Thamel and Kathmandu. Visited in November 2016.

Without question Thamel is THE tourist hub in Kathmandu. Here one can find hotels, bars, restaurants, travel agencies, clubs, ATMs, shops selling everything from camping, hiking and mountaineering equipment to local handicrafts and winter gear. This place is bustling with life from mid morning till very late at night. Mostly Thamel is where the foreign tourists flock to, but lately local youngsters have started to visit this place in numbers - especially in the clubs and bars. LOD (Lord of the Drinks) is one such club but there are many more. There are some nice rock pubs as well. Food and drinks are not exactly cheap (by Asian standards) and a certain amount of haggling during shopping can be done. The pandemic hit this place quite hard, as it did the whole tourism industry of Nepal which is the lifeline for this Himalayan state. However everything seems to be back to normal. Hopefully it stays that way - for the Nepalese sake!

Thamel (Nepal) is a commercial neighborhood located in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. ... There are many restaurants in Thamel that serve traditional and continental cuisine, although prices are significantly higher than in non-tourist areas. Thamel also acts as the pre-base camp for mountaineers.

Unless you are going to climb Mount Everest, don't even bother going to Nepal. It's so dirty and polluted. People spit in the streets and blow their noses into their hands in the streets. the dogs are walking around with their skin hanging off and open sores from skin diseases. I have been here 3 times and every time I come I get some type of infection and end up in the hospital. Back home I NEVER get sick and I am generally very healthy.
You could go to Switzerland and see the mountains and more beautiful places and won't have to worry about pollution or health problems.

Thamel is a district located in the old city of Kathmandu. It is a tourist place, a bit noisy but not far from Dream garden and some temples. My stay at the Norbulinka Boutique hotel allowed me to easily discover Thamel

although the place is know as the hub of tourism, at the time of covid most of the shops are closed. no point in going there. a sheer waste of time. I suggest that tourists start visiting thamel once the restrictions are lifted and market opened.
