- Daniel S2 contributionsBoudhanath stupaI have always wanted to visit a Buddhist Stupa. And when I finally had the opportunity to fulfill my wish, I was not disappointed. From the moment I stepped forward to the spread-out vastness of whitewashed stupas, the place's grandeur took me aback. Many other travelers around me paused to take in the beauty of this immense representation of spiritual devotion. Many locals milling around the stupa were devoutly bowing down to pay their respects.Visited October 2022Travelled soloWritten 31 March 2023
- katherine153Lancaster, United Kingdom276 contributionsMust-see World Heritage SiteA huge temple complex with Tibetan influence. Possibly the largest stupa (hemispherical mound built as burial mound or receptacle for religious objects/relics). The piercing blue eyes on each of the 4 faces seem to follow you wherever you go in the site! Do visit the onsite monastery - permissible even when monks are praying/meditating. The statues and artwork inside are simply breathtaking - sadly no photographs allowed but understandable. Visited with an excellent, very knowledgeable local guide - the facts and information were hard to take in, in one session but utterly fascinating.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 May 2023
- Ravindra VHyderabad, India1,210 contributionsLively placeThis stupa is very attractive and is inspired by Mahabodhi in Bodh Gaya, India. There are a lot of pigeons and it is a good play area for kids and Instagram reel makers. You can go to the top and get an amazing view of the stupa.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 June 2023
- Taranath BoharaKathmandu, Nepal129 contributionsTreasure of NepalBoudhanath Stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage, Nepal's biggest stupa, known as Jhyarung Khashyor, Khasa Chaitya, at Boudha-Jorpati Road, 4.5 km north of Kathmandu airport. The stupa covers 6756 sq km of land, 141 ft tall, 100 ft in diameter, and 3-tiered plinths in yantra form raised over 12 crossed rectangles. Five Dhyani Buddhas set Vairochana at the centre, Ratnasambhava in the south, Amitabha in the west, Amoghasiddhi in the north, and Aksobhya in the east direction. The dom tied 108 small niches with icons of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and female deities of conjoint figures in erotic poses. The floor base has countless praying wheels with carving mantras, Om Mani Padme Hum.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 October 2023

It contains the relics and remains of Buddha. There is a large spherical stupa and the place is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The place is usually crowded with tourists from all over the world and there are a number of cafes and shops in the periphery, where visitors can spend time.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 October 2023
- msa23_2000Chino Hills, California1,479 contributionsSurprisingly sereneThis stupa is surprising in that from the street it seems like a regular street, but once you walk in the area is quite charming. It is large and essentially you may just walk around and take pictures. It is surprisingly peaceful and serene compared to what is happening around it.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 October 2023
- Peter RDartford, United Kingdom1,239 contributionsMust be visitedA beautiful Stupa with hundreds of colourful pray flags hanging in lines from its peak. All around the base are hundreds of pray wheels which are continuously being spun by visitors walking clockwise around the Stupa. The colours are so vibrant and the carving so intricate. All around the Stupa are shops selling a huge variety of items and rooftop restaurants from where you can get some amazing views of the Stupa.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 October 2023
- mwhamburgerSeattle, Washington843 contributionsif you visit - go inside and don't miss itsaw it only from the outside. Our group wasn't offered a visit to the inside (unfortunately) as I can see from photos posted by others. the stupa is immense and walked pretty much around it. Lots of little shops surround it that are quite interesting. the eyes make it look almost kind of spooky.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 4 November 2023

We took a guide to take us around as we had limited time here. The guide did a good job explaining and showing us around in about 2 hours.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 November 2023
- singhasamWeymouth, United Kingdom3,725 contributionsAmazing stupaCOLOURFUL fluttering flags arcing down from the top of Boudhanath Stupa only added to the dominant impression that visitors got of this landmark site. I spent a large chunk of time exploring the area, first walking round the entire stupa in the required clockwise direction and then going inside to follow a circular route round which had numerous floral displays. This is one of the largest circular stupas in the world, a World Heritage site and a hugely popular destination for visitors to Kathmandu. It is also a useful chance to browse for souvenirs notably handicrafts and also to climb up into a little monastery and look out from a first floor balcony over this huge monument if you can see it through flocks of pigeons. I also got to push a giant prayer wheel taller than myself round three times while considering the place I was visiting. The Boudhanath Stupa is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Kathmandu and it attracted crowds of people to see it while I was there. Definitely a "must see" site on anyone's visit to Kathmandu.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 November 2023

I went there on a sunny day. The place was full of people. Inside there are some spots where some Buddhists pray. There were some beautiful flowers inside a metal bowl on the wall. It was a wonderful experience.

I am right now staying in Kathmandu for a few days. And Bouddhanath was my top list. BEST PLACE to find the surreal experience inside you. There's crowd, like a big big big crowd but don't care it at all when you feel your inner experience. I just kove Bouddhanath. I love you Kathmandu. You are giving me goosebumps.

Boudhanath Stupa has never failed to consistently inspire wonder in me. The magnificent stupa stands tall and transcends time, enveloping the air with tranquillity. This sacred site is not just a visual delight but also an enduring spiritual legacy of Buddhism. However, it would have been wonderful if the sacredness of the place is preserved without the intrusion of various shops. This might also make the place less crowded.

Is it better to visit this place in the evening or morning time?
Also, which one is better - boudhanath stupa or swayambhunath? If I had to do only one (and in the early morning time) which one should it be? I am short of time.
Or can I visit boudhnath in the evening and swayambhunath the next day in the morning?

Both are special place in terms of being considered as World Heritage sites.
Your easy accessibility matters as per your place of accommodation. As most of tourist if you stay in Hotel, Guest house as general tourist then that could be Thamel (tourist area) and in different case as pilgrimage and cultural heritage package tourist would most of the time stay near boudnath or near swoyambhunath stupa. However, thamel is in the distance or 20 - 30 minutes walk from Thamel. Since your stay is short I could like to give you a quick knowledge that evening 5 to 7 in general route to boudhnath is mostly awful regarding traffic and time could be consumed an hour in road trip only and distance from Thamel to Boudnath is 6.5 - 7 km from Thamel.
Now let's talk about timing...
Morning is beautiful both places since it is pilgrimage site. Pilgrims pay homage to hevenly and feed birds and monkey in swoyambhunath and mostly these days morning time is covered with health conscious people too doing stretches and exercise there, that is common. Here Newari, Nepali and Tibetan community are seen present for pilgrimage and also one can see couple of tourists in the temple complex. Here you can not have easy access to the restaurant so if you are hungry then you have to run down the swoyambhunath hill. Rest room service is just two places in northern sides of the main stupa but one may have to walk down there.
In boudnath most of the pilgrims are Tibetan and few Nepali and Newari. Here you can have easy access to breakfast in every blocks around more than 50 houses which makes the site a courtyard of circle. You will have good service of view of Boudnath stupa from any one of the restaurant from roof top to ground floor restaurant. Since hospitality services are in every steps here you have easy access to restrooms in any of those.
I would recommend one to go to swoyambhunath stupa by evening if one wants to see sparking twilights in city which is benefit of being high place than the valley but This city has no such high end of special lighting in any where in valley which could compete western cities.
The benefits of height makes me say is any time is good for swoyambhunath stupa and from hoapitality service point of view Boudnath is special any time a day.
If one would be happy to know then I would say you can rent a room just around the boudnath stupa and enjoy its view but for in swoyambhunath in the temple complex there are no hotels or guest houses, one has to walk down to the bottom of the hill for such hospitality services.
Now concluding here with information that both is World Heritage site so for preservation Nepali Government charges foreigners as entry fees and it could be around $10 per person westerners and Asian $40 approx.
Last but not least, near boudnath, you can visit Chabahil where you can see Charumati Vihar, Ganeshthan and another small stupa there. Hospitals are found in this area. This is around 2km west from boudha and 5.5 km east from Thamel. Another site near here is Pashupatinath and Guheshowri temple both sacrosanct temple for hindu religion community.
Around swoyambhunath is Kathmandu Durbar Square which is 20 mins foot steps away from swoyambunath stupa and 15 mins footsteps away from Thamel.
And very last you can have all kinds of hospitality services, high end to low end gift shops, art training centers or s hooks for Thangkas and one and only Free training on Traditional Newari Wood Carving Place in the City, WOODCRAFT GALLERY where one can spend their time for learning and spending free time in the gallery space.
I hope you must have got some relevant answer and if needed one can call me 9849501525, 982334339 for freelance Cultural and Traditional heritage Imformation plus Iconographic information.

Since, I didn't take any helicopter trip, it is suggested you personally enquire about it at Thamel.
There are plenty of private businesses out there conducting adventure trips and rides.
Visit a few of them and I am sure you would fetch the best price. All the best.

Emer... the Stupa is in a hug round square accessible from several points, which are narrow alleys, but you can reach each alley by car and walk just a few meters to the roundabout where the Stupa is.

You may have already left or visited Kathmandu, but yes, you can cover quite a bit in one hour. May be a little rushed, and there are lots of very interesting features around the Stupa that you will probably not get to see.
Hope this helps.
