This site of the April 1994 massacre has been declared a genocide memorial. It remains a solemn tribute to those who were slain, the bones and belongings of the dead still lying among the aisles and the altar.

According to our driver this site is visited less frequently than other memorials. For me, it was the highlight of our trip. Our guide, who was raised in exile after his family fled in 1962 and returned after the genocide, explained not only what happened...More

The Ntamara Church is another very powerful memorial t the cruelty and inhumanity of the genocide. This is much better organized and preserved than the. Nyamata memorial, but both are worth the visit. The cruelty on display, like how they dealt with the children in...More

The countless skulls and femurs are proof that the genocide really happened. It takes courage and bravery to visit this memorial.

This is another Church here where thousands were killed for their ethnicity. UN was in Ruwanda. No one bothered to intervene.

Not far from Nyamata but several kilometres off the main road, is the Church of Ntarama. Here as well a major massacre took place. Inside the Church are some of the bones and coffins of the victims, though most have now been respectfully buried at...More

This is not for the feint of heart but it is worth the visit. What happened at this church to the families and children of the region needs to be remembered to protect us against committing similar things in the future.

The church is quite a way out of town and not that easy for a stranger without a guide to find. However, it is well worth the visit. My wife and I felt that this was emotionally the most significant place in Rwanda that we...More

Going there after visiting the genocide memorial is eye-opening. the way there is also nice and gives a glimpse of rural Rwanda (only 40 min away from Kigali). However, note that some of the pictures do not reflect how the church currently looks like as...More

This is one of many churches in Rwanda where the slaughter of tens of thousands of Rwandans (mostly Tutsi) was committed in 1994. About 5,000 innocent people were slaughtered at Ntarama Church. The tour of the church is an intellectually and emotionally gripping example of...More
