Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was interesting to see the old cannons and walk around inside but it would have been better if there were a guided tour on giving some more facts and history. The exhibits inside were also good.

The site of the old Portugese fort was the scene of rivalry between different European powers during the 1600 to 1800s. The Portugese, Dutch, English and French all fought for hegenomy in the area. The structure that can be observed today was built by the Portugese and served to underscore their claim on the land. From around the 1850s a town started to develop around the fort. It was called Lourenço Marques, now Maputo.

The fort itself looks like a rather low profile military build-up with low but strong walls with guns on top surrounding a courtyard. The premises now house an interesting history museum also attractive to youngsters as figurines are used to illustrate major events in Mozambique's history (for some reason avoiding the civil war and the alliance with the Soviet Union).

This is a interesting place to visit. It’s very nice for families, our kids 10-14 enjoyed it. You pay 100 MT per person to enter. There is a lot of history, statues, and interesting information. It would be good for anyone local, or visiting family, or friends. Some signs are only in Portuguese, but many were translated in English as well.

Learned about the history of Mozambique and the Portuguese conquest of the king. Saw his coffin and other relics and paintings that brought that history to life. Should take a guide, all writing is in Portuguese!

I visit Fortaleza of Maputo as a Tourist and as an Event Producer. As a tourist i can say that is a must go spot in Maputo. You learn a lot of Mozambican History during the tribes era and mostly you have the tomb of the king of kings of the tribes. Also you can see how was built one of the most important forts of the colonial times among other amazing things and details.
As a producer, I worked in several events inside and from the team to the overall final look, everything was amazing and possible.
To repeat again.

Small little old Portuguese fort with some statues and canons. Not a must see place by any means but a quick visit is all it takes

A lot of cannons of different sizes, ship anchors, and historical photos. A pleasant surprise in downtown Maputo.
