The Katse dam, in the Lesotho Highlands, is one of the most spectacular water features in the country. Located on the Malibamatso River, this dam was completed in 1997 and is central to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The dam is second in size in Africa to Ghana’s Lake Volta and Akosombo Dam. The impressive dam wall is 185m high, 700m long and contains 92 000 cubic metres of concrete.

The drive doing on it's own but the dam at the end is a great fest of engineering. The dam wall which only costs 10R per person is a must. Highly informative guide, you get to go on the top of the dam wall and inside the structure. Highly recommended.

Staying at the Katse Dam hotel allows you to experience the majestic dam at its entirety, well almost. Nestled between mountains and winding round and round you can never quite see where it ends. However, the sluice gates tour is a must when visiting Katse Dam. It has the history and shows places where the dam flows. Hiking up those... More

Although a tricky drive up switchbacks and climbs, totally worth the drive so arrange accommodation in advance for a weekend of great scenery, photo ops across from the top of the dam at a tourist center, and if enough time, a dam tour close up. Horseback riding is accessible, but be forewarned that a hike from the road level to... More

Be sure to hire an experienced driver and use a 4 x 4 as road is yricky and can have dangerous black ice and snowstorms during the snow season.

Nice place to visit and see the inside of the dam wall. Just get your timing right as the last tour of the wall is early in the afternoon. Don't get car sick with all the turns in the road to get there.

Engineering masterpiece. Definitely worth the time to do the damwall tour. Our guide was great! She is very presentable and know her facts. It was just WOW being inside the wall. Would recommend this visit highly.

This has been on my bucket list for many years, and finally had the opportunity to go today. And it was well worth the wait. The drive there is quite long, but the views of the dam and the dam wall was spectacular. The tour through the dam wall was informative and we'll presented. But, just standing at the base... More

Katse Dam is definitely worth visit (provided you are keen on engineering masterpieces and highland landscapes) but you MUST consider your route when driving - it took us more than 6 hours to get from Sani Pass to Bokong. Also be careful when relying on your GPS even with downloaded set of the most fresh maps unless you are skilled... More
