Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In a country with so many religious sites, this place falls short. A place you should visit but there are more interesting places to see here.

Like with all visits to the Orthodox churches in Addis Ababa, this one is also rich in history and even more fascinating is the beauty of its architecture and getting to learn about the Orthodox religion and way of life. You get to see where Empress Zewditu was crowned as well as Emperor Haile Selassie and learn more about this church's linkage to the famous "Battle of Adwa" which is very central to the history of Ethiopia. A few relics have been preserved in their little museum, weaponry used in the battle as well as the garments the royals wore in those years. My one regret is not paying the extra charge to take a video as they get to demonstrate how a typical Orthodox service takes place in song, beating of the drums, the prayers and all....well, that is if delving into different religious practices is your thing.

Interesting art display in a church (at least from my perspective) - art is quite similar to Catholic scenes, which I've not seen before. There's an entrance fee, and then we tipped the guide.

We had an excellent tour guide who showed us round - the entry fee may seem expensive, but remember it's only about £3.50 per person. Also, as we found on a later tour of another church, it's regulated by the diocese, so it's not the priests or the elders' fault if you think it's too much. There were many beautiful artefacts that we were shown, and then we went into the small museum. Unfortunately there had been a power cut so we could only see by torchlight, and photographs were forbidden in the museum - strange, when they had been allowed (and no mention of turning off flash) in the church itself.

Behind the round about lies St George (St Giyorgis) church, a culture place to visit. As a woman it is recommended to shield your shoulders but is not a must (we did not havet to and it was ok). The entrance fee to St George (100 burr/person) includes guide into the church (very interessting) and also guiding through the little museum/exibition which will give you a brief overview of the Ethiopian history as well as about Addis. It was not easy to find the counter but people are very helpfull. The guide spoke english well. Outside the gates people are selling all sorts of cheep things.

The Cathedral has an interesting architecture seen in a number of Ethiopian churches. My timing was not right to see the inside, but the place is obviously holy to the locals as I saw o number of people prostrate themselves by the (closed) doorway. Menelik II square nearby is in an interesting neighborhood to walk around.

Once again the church charges some of the highest prices in town to tour a religious site. Their overpriced fee includes a tiny underwhelming museum of religious costumes and artifacts and entry by a rather rude and controlling priest of the otherwise impressive building. Some interesting artwork in the building. Despite their high entrance fees for foreigners, the building is not in the best of shape.

The church is a typical Ethiopian Orthodox church. Men and women enter from separate doors and inside are three areas, with the innermost only accessible by the priests themselves. Its a much more modern version of what you can see in places like Bahir Dar. There is a small museum also. If you are in the area it is worth a short visit, but it wasn't a must see IMO.

We came here for the start of Timket and the atmosphere was astonishing as the crowds of largely local people mostly in their colourful robes and costumes were gathering. The only downside was entering the cathedral was difficult as there was too much happening but it looked very much like an Orthodox Ethiopian Cathedral .

When we came to the cathedral (at around 9:30 on Thursday) there were too many people and we could not even go inside, because local people occupied all doors. Maybe it was a praying time...
