Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This monument in the capital of Ethiopia is interesting after listening from my tour Guide: has a very impressive sculpture in the center of the city.

I got stranded in addis due to a cancelled flight. I was given a hotel and meal voucher and my driver drove past on the way to the airport and we stopped for a photo

Another short visit in the capital of Ethiopia to see the statue of Lion of Judah opposite the old railway station between Ethiopia and Djibouti. One minute is enough for a photo and to get rid of annoying kids running after you for money.

The Lion of Judah monument is located within the square in front of the old railway station at the end of the Winston Churchill Avenue, and yet it can easily be overlooked in this busy area full of traffic. The memorial was created by the French sculptor Georges Gardet in 1930 on the occasion of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie l. on November 2, 1930, and it is made in gilded bronze, placed on a black granite pedestal decorated with relief portraits of Menelik II., Haile Selassie I., Empress Zewditu, and Ras Makonnen (1852-1906, General and Governor, and the father of Haile Selassie l.). The statue is symbol of Ethiopian Emperors and Ethiopia; and particularly well known in Ethiopia, because in the 1930s, when the sculpture had been taken to Rome, it was the cause of a protest against Italian colonialism by Eritrean patriot Zerai Deres, who wounded several people with a scimitar. For his gesture, Zerai Deres is celebrated by Eritrean and Ethiopian historiography as a patriot and national hero. The Lion of Judah statue remained in Rome until the 1960s, when it was returned to Ethiopia after the negotiations in Addis Ababa. Emperor Haile Selassie took part in the new inauguration ceremony in military uniform. After the 1974 revolution, the Derg regime thought of removing the monument, symbol of the monarchy, but an association of Arbegnuoc veterans (Ethiopian ex-combatants) claimed that it was a memory of Ethiopian antifascist resistance and a symbol of Ethiopia and thus, the regime agreed to leave the monument. It is indeed an important place to visit and access is free, although the monument itself, the walk way and the surrounding garden area is in a real need of maintenance.

The statue is interesting you have to put up with a lot begging, etc. Include it in a day trip not really worth seeing on its own.

It's an interesting statue but you can't get very close as of late August 2018 because it is blocked off with lines for construction.

The Lion of Judah statue was high on my list of places to see in Addis Ababa! It has been the symbol of Ethiopia for a very long time and truly embodies the spirit of it’s people. I can’t wait to return to this amazing city!
