This square is popularity known as Arat Kilo and commemorates the victorious return of Emperor Haile Selassie to Ethiopia on Meyazia 27 or 5 May, 1941, five years to the day he left after Mussolini's fascist forces invaded his country.

Meyazia 27 Square is the official name of what is popularly known as Arat Kilo, a name that applies both to the square and the surrounding district of the city of Addis Ababa. The monument at the heart of the Square commemorates the victory over the fascist Italian invaders, and the struggle that preceded it (Meyazia 27 on the Ethiopian Calendar, May 5th on the Gregorian Calendar, is both the day that Addis Ababa was occupied by the Fascists, as well as the day that Emperor Haile Selassie returned to his capital in triumph exactly 5 years later).
The original monument included a relief of the Emperor Haile Selassie holding the flag of Ethiopia, which was altered during the rule of Mengistu Haile Mariam into a representation of a guerrilla fighter holding flag.
Due to its proximity to the Menelik Palace, residence of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian Parliament Building, Arat Kilo is often used as a metonym for the Ethiopian government.
King George VI is the road on which the National Museum is situated, so one can have a quick stop at this Monument.

I gave up on the Ethiopian calendar (meyazia 27). Everybody in Addis knows this square as Arat Killo also used as a metanym for Government, as government buildings are nearby. A rather unassuming monument to commemorate victory over Italian fascism. Given the brutal and cruel nature of the five-year occupation I wonder why so many things in the present remind Ethiopians of Italy (coffee machines, spagetti, white bread, architecture).
Access is problematic as the monument is on a roundabout in the middle of an ocean of traffic.

You know those things you pass with the taxi and you ask the driver, say what was that? This was one of those things. Not impressive to be honest, and very small too. My appreciation goes out for it, however, because of the original way it was formed, and I wonder if you can really walk under it.

Meyazia 27 Square in Addis Ababa is among the public also known as Arat Kilo and it is a square in, which its center is the epoch making monument, commemorating Ethiopia's liberation from Fascist Italy.
Much of interest maybe the fact that in the Ethiopian calendar 'Meyazia 27' (May 5), is both the day when Addis Ababa fell to Italy and the day when Emperor Haile Selassie triumphantly returned to the city after its liberation. Also remarkable is that the original monument included a relief of the Emperor Haile Selassie holding the flag of Ethiopia, which was altered during the rule of the Derg into an image of a guerrilla fighter holding the flag.

Arat Kilo is the round about where the monument stands. There isn't much around and we came here trying to find a van to Bole airport. After some haggling we got a blue cab from here to the airport for 80 birr. Addis is really not a friendly city to tourists and if you are traveling on your own it can be downright frustrating as the locals are extremely aggressive and rude.
