At the very far end of the plateau over looking the bay with view to the lighthouse stands an imposing statue of Diogo Gomes a Portuguese navigator, explorer and writer. He was a servant and explorer of the more famous Henry the Navigator. He discovered some of the Cape Verde islands.

Be sure to see this colossal bronze up in the city center on the Plateau. It's near a quiet park with a pleasant cafe overlooking the port area.

You wouldn't know from the statue itself, which stands looking down over Gamboa Beach from the Plateau next to the President's Palace - there's no signage or information. The sextant is a clue and you can make an educated guess, but still... The statue is epic enough that it deserves better signage (and care).
