Mefou National Park is home to Mefou Primate Sanctuary, a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Ape Action Africa. With more than 300 rare and endangered primates in its care, Ape Action Africa is now one of the largest conservation projects of its kind in Africa. Many of the animals arrive at the sanctuary as orphans of the illegal bushmeat and pet trades and are rehabilitated and provided with lifelong care.

I organised a tour to Mefou Park for a group of 20tourists and we were treated to an excellent guided tour. The guide was very knowlegeable. The sanctuary is well organised and I would advise anyone visiting Yaounde to take a tour to this park. Always call to pre book because the park could be closed. I drove to the... More

This is a top notch operation that does a spectacular job caring for animals, nursing the back to health, and educating the public on the beauty of Cameroonian wildlife. The visit last only about 1.5 hours and is a guided tour through the bush as you visit gorillas, monkeys, and chimpanzees, all in fenced areas. Just watch out for the... More

Best part of our tour was being able to to see the silver back gorillas up close! Our tour guide was knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions. Nice park!

Our visit to this sanctuary was amazing, we were met by a volunteer and taken to a visitors center where we met our guide, he explained why the sanctuary exists and how it's run, it was very cool experience, it's unfortunate that we need places like Mefou but I'm glad that the primates have found safety, care and love. I... More

Wasn't easy for my (local) driver to find, but it was worth the drive out of town. The guide was excellent, describing (primarily in good French, very limited English) the animals and their care, as well as a nice side tour of major trees and other plants in the forest. The lowland gorillas were a highlight, but the variety was... More

It took about an 1.5 hours to get there from Yaounde city center. I liked the decoration at the entrance of the park, the staff are very welcoming and professional. The most interesting part was that I saw 21 gorillas. Make sure however that you reach there before 16.30 local time as the last group for the day starts at... More

I visited Mefou five or six times over two years. I was always impressed by the staff. Knowledgeable (in varying degrees) but always willing to give additional explanations and they take their job of educating the visitors very seriously and showing the link between the habitat and the animals. It is also impressive the way they actually care for their... More

This is a sanctuary for the endagered primates, however there are other mankeys (mandrill, cercopitecus, etc). I particulary liked the gorillas. The volunteers working there offer a lot of information, explain the behavior of the apes. Tgey do a nice job and make this tour a pleasant experience, especially, but not only, for children.

I spent about 3 weeks in the primate sanctuary with a group of 4. Our tour guide spoke enough English to answer our questions and it was a great experience. We purchased some souvenirs on the way out. It was worth the long drive (almost 2 hours) from Yaounde.
