Disappointing
Jan. 2019 • Couples
A few masks, a few stories, nice building. We came with natural hunger to learn about the various tribes in the country, and met a small, rundown, neglected set of masks and a bit more. So disappointing ,

We walked in and found an excellent guide that took us around the museum. Fascinating collection and great overview of Benin, the history and culture. Definitely the best musuem in Porto Novo and on my top 5 for Benin.

A place to learn about the people of Benin republic
Oct. 2017 • Friends
This is a good idea and when I bring people on a trip with Anago Osho Adventures, the first thing I do is to make the tourists learn about the different culture and way of life of the environment people.

The museum is rich with information but the management need to promote the place more for everyone to benefit from the rare collections.

Interesting history and museum
Apr. 2018 • Friends
This museum is simple but provides an interesting history of Benin. Our guide spoke English and was helpful, but there was another person who walked around with us to turn the lights on and off which seemed unnecessary. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area as it's a small space but provides a good amount of history.

Stopped there with a friend after a moto tour of the town. The history is revealed again but it is strictly forbidden to take photos

This is a MUST to understand the religious/cultural history and customs of Benin

It is small museum; we were only allowed to visit the downstairs of an old house converted for this purpose. So it won´t take you long. But you see masks and disguises used in traditional dances and ceremonies. Unfortunately, photos are not allowed.

Overview of local culture and history
Dec. 2016
Although it is only a small exhibit in French, the guide did an excellent job of explaining each piece in clear English. We got a very good overview of the history and culture of the country. As always, the more you ask, the more you learn and get out of the tour.

The Benin's history and the museum where understands a tradition

At a 2-story museum, a contracted guide guides me.
Photography is prohibited in the inside.
I arrive by car from Cotonou for approximately one hour.

One hour is enough!

A poorly maintained collections of dubious quality. The guide did her best to make it sound interesting. There are old Voodou masks, some relics from the Dan-Abomey kingdom. But pretty disappointing for the national museum in the capital city. In the basement there is an exhibition of callabash (excuse the yawn).
And photos inside the museum are not allowed!!!
