this little quarter is very charming, it has the advantage that once you get in you forget yourself, and for a passionate of photography like me you can spend there more that hours taking exceptionnal pictures. The sun makes the clay bricks very gorgeous, and shaded walkways are even more charming.
At the sunset the bricks turn to gold, and you can live that same magical moment that marrakech is known for ... An unforgettable show for photographers !!!
The day we was there, the Museum of Tozeur was closed, so we can say nothing about it.
We liked the "Tozart" art gallery, it has a very interesting items of traditionnal tunisian handicraft.
We really recommand also to visit M. Mondher Abbas in his amazing cafe called "Hoch el Abbas" laying 30 meters after Tozart. It is like a traditionnal musuem and lounge, you can drink a perfumed mint tea and see the huge item collection he has in his garden. The guestbook of that cafe is awesome, many worldwide known people came there !!!
You can finish your tour by going to the "Alef shop" which is a beautiful shop that buy also very interesting tunisian handicraft and leather but in a more modern and conceptual design than those in Tozart. In fact, Alef shop in tozeur is the supplier of many luxury boutiques in Paris.

I walked thru mid afternoon so was pretty deserted in the heat. It is mostly a residential area With few shops that I could find. There is some beautiful sandstone brick work along the narrow streets that we only saw in the south of Tunisia.

Tozeur intrigued me when I listened to the song of Franco Battiato - Train for Touzer ( Treno per Tozeur ).Tozeur was historically an important stop for caravans crossing the Sahara, a place to rest and refuel before heading deep into the dessert. This charming city is based around a large Oasis known for its palm trees and the production of dates.The Berber tribes have important outpost for much of Tozeur history, which have perhaps the most influence on the city's historic architecture. The Medina, the old town of Tozeur, is where possible to find the most historic and beautiful buildings, and where life takes place with the spirit that Battiato describes in his wonderful song.

The medina of Tozeur is unique because of it's use of the white-brick construction original to Iraq. It's breathtakingly beautiful. If you haven't been around the Arab world much and medinas are new to you- this is a MUST see. If you have experienced a number of Medinas, though, this is worth seeing for the unique architecture but probably not for the souvenir and rug shops. Those are a lot like others in the region. We particularly enjoyed "La Grande Boutique De La Medina (also called Maison Ben Achour)," both for the souvenirs and local artisans on the bottom floors and the strong coffee, panoramic views, clean bathroom and cool shade of the coffee shop upstairs.

Interesting medina with old narrow streets and tunnels. It is special becouse of bricks they use for making houses. They make attractive decor on the wals, Nice to stop in a galery, shop or a tea house. Specialy in one with a view over rooftops.

I just finished wandering around this area with my local Couch surfing host Marwan and he pointed out a lot of really awesome stuff. Little games kids play with stones or coins in holes of the brick work and how a lot of the brick work on the walls has symbolic meanings most people would miss. Plus it really is an enchanting part of town to visit. Visit close to the end of the day so you get to see it transition from a busy medina to a quiet almost ghost town as people rush to mosques to pray. One of my favor experiences here.

I think this is the best medina in Tunisia. There are many interesting buildings, beautiful doors and more to explore.

I can't really add much more about the beauty of this area than has already been written, but if you can do visit the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions which is in a small traditional house in the heart of the medina (I notice on google that there is another museum by this name but in a much more magnificent building). It is run by a most beautiful Berber woman, who gave us a tour of each room explaining how the artefacts were used and singing traditional songs in her lovely voice. She speaks Arabic and French but her English is quite good and she is always seeking to improve it. Seeing the tradition couscous cookers and the kitchen was fascinating, and in the marriage bedroom she showed us the traditional wedding costumes. Unmissable.

This was enjoyed by all our group. We had a tunisian guide who pointed out the history and architecture of the medina. The bricks were particularly interesting as houses constructed in small bricks made in the area and arranged in interesting patterns. Went to a cafe "Bock al Ablees" cafe culturel, run by a musician. We had mint tea with almonds there, delicious! Medina square had antique shop and building of interest, not pestered by sellers. Able to wander around and enjoy. Good view of town from top of one of the shops there. Then wandered around interesting covered fruit and veg. market, Good dates there! Well worth the visit!
