Je reviendrai !Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 September 2023
- Viktoria ShalevVienna, Austria2 contributionsRongai Route With World Adventure ToursI returned to Tanzania with my brothers for my second Kilimanjaro attempt with World Adventure Tours. We had an amazing team with us captained by senior guide Maige, assisted by guide Kasim. There were ten porters and our top chef Alex making quite a big climbing party. This wonderful crew was committed to our success, and they did not spare any efforts to keep us safe from camp to camp, till our ultimate prize, the summit. I agree with Patrick that this route was more scenic than Machame and I also found it a little bit easier. Maige's experience was evident from the way he handled everything going on. He had a checklist in his mind because nothing eluded him. When to do the health checks, ensuring the porters broke/set camp and most importantly leading the trekking party. We owe a lot to the preparation done by the World Adventure Tours pre-climb. It was very thorough, and they also did our checklist at the hotel for our gear for items like gaiters, ski trousers, a rain coat, a warm jacket, sunscreen, vaseline, a headlamp and ski gloves. We were well fed and hydrated during the trek as our cook was very good. He was just amazing! We are really in love with Kilimanjaro and might just return for another go!Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 September 2023
- Marit StevensWest Flanders Province, Belgium2 contributionsTanzania Trekking Adventure with Tanzania Wildlife AdventuresMy brother and I completed our Kilimanjaro trekking with Tanzania Wildlife Adventures. We did the eight days Lemosho route for an additional day to acclimatize to Kilimanjaro's high altitude. We had an amazing crew consisting of guide Kitomari, seven porters also known as the Kili Boys and Philemon who was responsible for the food. Kitomari is the best guide that we could have wished for, very experienced, highly organized and great company. The trek was tough, luckily, we were well prepared from the information we were given prior to the climb. However, we still found the summit attempt at night extremely difficult. I dont think we could have reached the summit without Kitomari. The landscape is stunning with plenty of photo ops along the trail. I will share some of the spectacular ones after sorting. I highly appreciate being a part of this once in a lifetime journey with amazing people who put our wellbeing and success first. We made this happen together! - PStevenToronto, Canada2 contributionsFantastic Solo Trekking with Mboni AdventuresI had planned to do Kilimanjaro with my wife, unfortunately she had to break off very close to our travel date. Jackson was gracious enough to accommodate the changes and refund my wife's fee, which says a lot about Mboni Adventures. Traveling alone to Tanzania was a bit scary, however the trek turned out to be a pleasant adventure and opportunity to rejuvenate on the Lemosho trail. I was lucky to get Marto as my guide, assisted by porters Ezekiel, Kim and Zakayo. Mushi was the cook and he was an excellent cook. He prepared very delicious meals that were not only filling but balanced with vegies and fruit. Trekking up the Lemosho route brought back memories of Kilimanjaro flooding back. The weather was good all throughout the period and being a solo climber, I had more time to absorb the breathtaking scenery and know more about my crew. They brought me in as part of their family where I had little to worry about. I have to commend my crew for their patience, hardwork and excellence during the trek. They gave me the best service and support, leading to Uhuru Peak. I highly recommend Mboni Adventures as a leading operator for Kilimanjaro trekking.Visited September 2023Written 19 September 2023
- AdrianUnited States1 contributionLook no father than Tanzania Horizon Safaris, They are all you need for your KILIMANJARO Hike!!!!!Me and my friend did the Kilimanjaro hiking on the 7 Days Lemosho route with Tanzania Horizon Safaris, Our guides Jackson' and Joel were amazing. You could tell that they were very competent and experienced. They were professionell, but also funny and always friendly. We had great talks about everything and they always took their time for us. The porters was also very funny and welcomed us very friendly. It felt like we had a good connection together. The food was always delicious. They did everything, so that we could feel comfortable and focus on the hiking. The hike itself was fantastic. We walked above the clouds for most of the time. The views were stunning. Our guides answered all of our questions about the mountain and landscape. They constantly checked in with Us to see how we were doing and would bring extra snacks for us along the way. Thanks to their hard work, as well as the crew's hard work, our trip was one will never forget and one that will always have a special place in my heart. I cannot recommend Tanzania Horizon Safaris enough - amazing guides, hardworking, intelligent, thoughtful and motivating. I miss them already!!!Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 September 2023
- Tobias LManchester, United Kingdom9 contributionsBy far the best expedition company on KilimanjaroWe had the best Tanzania experience possible with the help of the local team Nafika Tours. Nafika Tours has the best team on the mountain by far! Each and every one of their staff (from the guides to the porters and admin staff) cares about their client’s wellbeing above and beyond what I expected. It is because of this care and their attention to every detail that they have such a high summit rate! I am very glad that we chose Nafika Tours . The upfront communications were proactive and thorough. All logistics including pick-up from the airport and the hotel went smoothly. The guides were friendly and very experienced. All of us summited Uhuru Peak, thanks to the guides and porters. Meals, drinks, and amenities were excellent considering we were on the mountain for seven days and everything was carried and prepared by our porters and the cook Our tents were of quality and always pitched and ready for us when we arrived at each camp with hot food, hot drinks and hot water on hand…. The Guides were incredible! Each night they checked our pulse and oxygen, and talked about the plan for the next day. We had a great experience with them. All in all Many thanks Nafika Tours for their best service and would definitely recommend to anyone looking to climb Kilimanjaro.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 September 2023
- Marc2 contributionsOnce in a lifetime family adventure with Mboni AdventuresMy family of five aged between 19 and 59 recently completed trekking Kilimanjaro on the Lemosho route with Mboni Adventures. I would like to thank the crew for their outstanding support and for giving us a trekking experience that we will remember for a long time. We had contacted Jackson the owner in April after rave recommendations from our friends who regularly used Mboni Adventures on their trips to Tanzania, and we are absolutely happy with our choice. We had three guides with us; Rama, Frank and Msangi and they are the best. Rama was the lead and his brilliance in leading the group was evident. He worked well with the other guides, porters and cooks to ensure our comfort and safety. In the beginning the daily sections were manageable for us all, however as we got higher it became more difficult and the guides support became a crucial part of our climb. I am very certain that we could not made it safely to the summit without them. I was impressed by the quality of the equipment and gear from Mboni Adventures. I also have to commend our cook for the delicious food we had along the way. I definitely recommend Mboni Adventures for coming through for my family and making it a once in a lifetime adventure.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 September 2023
- CathereenNew York City, New York3 contributionsWonderful Team Uprise Africa ExplorerI did a lot of research before booking a company for my climb and safari. Uprise Africa Explorer had nothing but good reviews and recommendations. I choose this company for a few reasons, their expertise, values, and price. The price is very reasonable for a trek climbing to that altitude. The transport to/from the mountain was in a bus – which had comfortable seats and air-conditioning. The transport to/from the airport was in a minivan, which too was very comfortable. The drivers were very professional, and I never felt unsafe driving with them. The tents that we stayed in while completing the climb were extremely spacious. They are 3-man tents but will be shared by two people. Or if you get lucky like me (or book the private package), you will get them all to yourself. The sleeping mattress they provide are very comfortable too. This will feel very luxe if you are used to sleeping in a basic hiking tent. We had 4 guides with us, all were incredibly knowledgeable and approachable. Each time a member of our group was slightly feeling the effects of altitude or happened to get sick – the guides were there straight away taking care of them. They also were very good at picking up when you weren’t doing so well, even if you thought you were. They were extremely professional, but very easy to talk to when you were walking. This really makes the long hours fly by and it’s always nice to have a bit of a laugh on the trail! Each guide had completed the summit multiple times, so they all were very experienced. The guides went even further then my expectations, by doing things like warming your hands on the summit (I was struggling with this), taking your backpack if you were struggling and helping me get my phone from my many layers at summit (I thank them for this because I was useless!). I couldn’t have asked for better guides on my trip, they really made the trek fun, informative and very safe. If you are looking for a tour company for your hike up Kilimanjaro, I couldn’t recommend Uprise Africa Explorer more. The service, experience and guides were all incredible. Choosing the right company for your hike will either make or break it, I can say you will have a great hike if you book with Uprise Africa Explorer.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 September 2023
- Neil J1 contributionThe Excellent Tearm of Fabulous Guides and Porters from Nafika toursI was able to check the summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro off of my bucket list thanks to Nafika Tours !!! I had the most amazing experience and it all started with great communication with Elias. He was always quick to respond to my emails and crazy questions. I chose the longer 8 day route to stand the best chance of acclimatizating well and therefore being able to summit, and I made it! Getting to the summit is an amazing feeling, and the view across the crater at the top is stunning! Nafika Tours took care of every detail, and it’s reassuring to know that safety is their top priority. They carry all of the safety equipment and are well trained to use it. Our guides even stopped to help clients of another company, because our guides were so knowledgeable and the other guides know it. Our cook, did a fantastic job preparing our meals each day. He accommodated our vegetarian and limited meat preferences. A variety of hot vegetable soups were served at lunch and dinner. The meals were high in carbs since you burn so many calories during the hike. Fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, pizza, fried chicken were staples. Breakfast was oatmeal, eggs, toast, crepes, and fruit. Snack was popcorn, nuts, and biscuit cookies. Coffee and tea were served in your tent each morning. Every day when we arrived at camp, They would clean our shoes and gaiters. This was a nice treat which we learned did not happen with other companies. Frank’s big personality made our arrival each day fun, Nafika has the best quality camping equipment, tents, matresses, sleeping bags, etc…. After we summitted Kili, the fantastic Nafika tours leadership continued with Joseph as they guided us through the most incredible 4 day safari finding every safari animal imaginable including lions with their cubs, a leopard stalking a Giselle and the Big 5! The safari lodges were perfect ways to spend the safari nights I also met some other great solo travelers and trekkers that I hope become long-term friends. I highly recommend you book with Nafika Tours they really local company for an absolutely unforgettable experience on Mt. Kilimanjaro.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023
- Sofia CarlsonSingapore, Singapore4 contributionsWonderful all-around Kilimanjaro experience - with Nafika ToursJust finished an 8-day Lemosho tour with Nafika Tours and I am very happy with my choice of operator for my attempt. It was clear that the guides and everyone involved were on top of their game. The attention to detail and to safety was great. One of the first things I noticed when we got onto the mountain was how much more professional and legit the guides, equipment, and services seemed than some of the other ones. Kilimanjaro doesn’t require ropes or technical climbing skills but occasionally it has some steep areas to scramble over and around. At these spots, several guides would surround that area and ensure that you stepped on the best spots to make the assent easier for yourself. How our cook Ibra was able to provide 3 excellent, tasty, plentiful and nutritious meals each day, at increasing altitude remains a mystery to the group (he catered for one Gluten in the team also). The camping equipment tents and sleeping bags were fit for purpose and provided excellent warmth on those cold nights. If you are not sure about climbing Kilimanjaro and think it may be too hard, I can assure you that with the expertise and help of the amazing guides and team, you can do it. All of us, we all made it, and I am not sure we all would have made it without the help and support of the local Nafika Tours. It was the best experience I have ever had, and I am grateful and glad I took the trip and just did it. I can honestly say, you can relax and let these guys Nafika take care of things.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023

Climbing mount Kilimanjaro with a group from Tanzania Horizon was the adventure of a lifetime. We went on an 7 day expedition with people from all around the world. In our group we were 5, from USA, Canada and Norway. We were all like-minded people, seeking to have a unique experience and to discover a new side of the world and of ourselves. Organization was perfect: arrival and the days in the lodge before departure were great, the “warm-up” safari was beautiful, and reception when we came back was very warming.
During the climb we had outstanding guides, who made sure that we were always confident, safe, in good shape and eating and drinking plenty.
Thanks to care of the Tanzania Horizon team, all 5 of us made it to the summit, and I can tell you that: whatever is the greater power that you believe in, when you see the sun rising from the top of that volcano, you get to feel it.
Sharing this experience created a very strong bond in our group, and gave all of us a great story to tell our grandchildren some day I strongly recommend Tanzania Horizon !

A great experience of climbing Mt.Kilimanjaro with Goldfish Tours. The whole team were extremely helpful and professional, handling the booking online and answering all our questions. Our guide Fredy gave us a thorough briefing and checked all our equipment in the hotel in moshi. On the mountain, guides Fredy and Magnus were informative, and friendly. Our team of porters were hardworking and cheerful. Also our cook and waiter amazed us with their ability to provide hot, delicious and plentiful meals in the cold, rain, and dark. The team as a whole did a fantastic job getting us to the top and were flexible and receptive to feedback.Would highly recommend Goldfish Tours for a very competitive price, experienced and professional staff, and a youthful and energetic edge. 8 days Lemosho route is very scenic and has more days for acclimatization. My wife and I joined 4 other climbers on the trek and we have made unforgettable memories. We had Yesse, Theo and Chitanda as our main guides assisted by nineteen porters and one cook (Fanuel) as our support crew. The crew was friendly and put all their efforts to comfortably and safely helping us reach the summit and back to Moshi. In the 8 or so days we interacted closely learning about best trekking ways, Kilimanjaro’s flora and fauna, listening to their experiences on Kilimanjaro on their many guiding expeditions that we became like family. Fanuel prepared nice dishes and served hefty portions that we ate to our fill. Zara has quality tents and sleeping bags that kept us very warm even in sub-zero temperature. We had morning and evening health vitals checks, I suffered from a mild case of altitude sickness on the summit night and Yesse was alert to notice. He requested the party to stop, then gave me a mug of (herbal) tea and luckily I was able to continue with the trek to the summit.
We or I definitely would not have made it to the top without their support. 2 very important things: hire a chemical toilet, bring low denomination euros/dollars to tip crew.
Zara is definitely doing an impeccable job for climbers and I fully recommend them

I can strongly recommend Climbkili as the ultimate guided experience on Mt. Kilimanjaro.
First and foremost, I am grateful we had Herment Mosha as our guide. He has all the qualities of the best guides-extremely knowledgeable, superb athleticism, safety-minded, kindness, friendliness, and empathy. He also has tremendous management skills as I noted with his interactions with the other Climbkili guides and staff. I have had over forty mountain guides in various locations and I can say that Herment stands with the best. In the U.S., the best mountain guides are called the “guide’s guide” as other guides aspire to be as good as them. Herment is a “guide’s guide.” This man has over 174 summits on Kilimanjaro and the respect that guide’s from other groups give him is noticeable. The assistant guides, Goodlove and Florian, were extremely strong and dedicated to the groups success also.
The entire staff of porters was amazing. Not only did they perform the superhuman feat of moving and setting camp each day, they saw to it that it was as comfortable as possible. The meals were plentiful, hot, and helped us maintain our energy. Even more extraordinary was the staff’s friendliness and palpable joy in their work despite how challenging it is. These men are world class athletes and they also had great song/dance routines in the morning to motivate us upwards.
Climb Kili is also one of the few groups that has a permit for the Kosovo camp. The benefit of the Kosovo camp for the final high camp cannot be underestimated and I think it is an advantage for Climbkili that distinguishes it from others companies. Gaining the extra distance and altitude above the standard Barack camp the day before the summit attempt is key to a higher success rate.
On behalf of my son, girlfriend , and her daughter, and myself, I feel gratitude towards the entire staff and Herment, and fortunate that we went with Climbkili for our successful summits on Kilimanjaro. I will always recommend Climbkili and Herment.

We found Ungitours when we were searching for companies to climb Kilimanjaro and Safari in Tanzania . Ungitours were cheaper compared to other companies from the start of the booking Faiza was always helpful to the trip the whole team were helpful mountain to safari we were treated with respect we were group of 3 male, 2 women and 1kid of 13years they did their best to ensure we had a memorable trip. This experience was soo much more rewarding than I expected. The rainforest and mountain top views are just the beginning, because the comradery & support of the whole Climbkili group make for everlasting memories. Our Head Guide Herment led with authority and confidence, but knew just when to stop to provide history on flowers & landmarks along the way. I felt completely at ease with Herment and his Assistant Guides Goodlove and Florian watching over us on the hikes. They were very patient and supportive when we stopped to take pictures, eat snacks, drink water, and partake in daily banter. After several short conversations, it felt like everyone in the group (including guides) had been friends forever. It was also very evident that our Guides were friends with everyone else working on the mountain, which also gave me great comfort that they were experienced and respected by others. We had a large variety of soups, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and even pizzas one night. Several nights, we called for Chef Justin to visit us, so that we praise his cooking in person.
Everyone treated us with genuine kindness, love, and endless positive support. Their singing & dancing, infectious positive attitude, and amazing work ethic & physical strength powered us through each day.
I wholeheartedly recommend ClimbKili if you are planning to climb Kilimanjaro. Sia Moshi and her staff at the Summit Lodge take of everything and does a great job being very personable and organizing the hotel.

What an unbelievable experience!!! My 60th birthday was looming and at the last minute, I decided not to let Covid prevent me from celebrating in a unique and different way. My husband and I booked through Zara Tours and we had the good fortune of being assigned our guide, Living Maleo, and his team. We ended up being the first trek for this group since Covid began, and the comradery and joy emanating from their tents was infectious. Living's been guiding for 17 years and he's professional, experienced, knowledgeable and flexible. Not only is he highly respected by his porters and crew, but he also understands the unique goals and motivations of his individual clients. By a bizarre accident, I'd had a lobe of my lung removed 7 months prior and, despite being acclimated and fit, my chances of summiting were unclear. When I explained my situation to Living in our pre-climb meeting, I made it clear that my goal was the overall experience, not the summit, and if either he or I noticed my condition deteriorating, I wanted him to not hesitate in turning me around. At 17,000 feet, that's exactly what happened. Despite not summiting, Kili was the trip of a lifetime. And the guest service at Zara Tours was exceptional. They were able to book us from start to finish in less than a month, even making very last minute changes without complaint. In addition to the rushed booking, my husband and I are vegan, but Zara was more than accommodating in providing fresh and delicious food throughout the trek. We also found Zara's rate to be surprisingly reasonable..., just be prepared to adequately tip. The porters and guides definitely earn it!
If you're thinking of Kili, but concerned that you won't summit, go anyway! We were amazed at the high summit rate, especially on the Lemoshu route. If you're one of the few who don't summit, it may be the experience of a lifetime anyway. And it could be the perfect time to get it off your bucket list. We were the only two in our group and the mountain was much less crowded than normal. (If you're concerned with travel restrictions during Covid, we found the pre-flight PCR testing to not be an issue and many places will do it for free. In addition, several African airlines have folded, but if you're coming from the U.S. or Europe, we flew on KLM from Washington D.C. to Amsterdam and from there, KLM has a direct flight to Kilimanjaro (Moshi.) The cost was extremely affordable and KLM takes Covid protocol very seriously.

Great company with amazing staff and experiences, before we had even booked our trip we sent an email to a range of companies and Silver Expedition was the only one that replied promptly and with the most information.
Mt. Kilimanjaro, we opted 7 day Rongai Route as it truly is the most beautiful and scenic route. Our support crew of guides, cook, and porters were just outstanding and it is because of those guys that we really had a great time, which helped us a lot to made the summit so easy. All the crew were friendly, fantastic and amazing. Many thanks to them.
3 days safari camping
We had the pleasure to be guided by Baraka during our safari trip. He was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, whilst providing lots of helpful insights/fun facts into secret lives of all sorts of wildlife that we encountered. The animals we observed remain our memory and overtake every negativity.
I would not hesitate to recommend Silver Expedition to anyone who wants to trek Kilimanjaro Mountain or safari. They will give you a memory of a lifetime. I have recommended them to my friends and are already booked to use them on April. I would do this again with the same person in a heartbeat.
Thanks Silver Expedition for the memorable trek and safari I had in Tanzania.

I did the Kilimanjaro trek last month with my co-workers.It had been on my bucket list for years. I am so happy I was able to finally do it.It was very challenging physically & mentally, but the journey was worth every step. Altitude sickness can be a real problem, so you need to ascend slowly, drink plenty of water and be guided by a professional company. The CEO at Goldenice helped us choose a good route with magnificent scenery all along the way (the Lemosho route).During the trek everything went as planned,Our local guide Werema was PHENOMENAL! Werema’s English was good enough and he was a really reliable guide that we always felt 100% safe with him. He is very experienced about the mountain including all aspects of local culture and history and told us many stories along the way.Our Porters were amazing, carried all our gears, very hard working and always smiling. The food from our chef peter was fabulous, he kept us health for all eight days of our trek.Standing on the rooftop of Africa at 5,895m is simply the best thing I have ever done in my entire life.what an achievement. Goldenice exceeded every expectation that we had,I would recommend them to anyone planning a visit to Kilimanjaro.

Hi
I’m planning to do Kili summit with bunch of my friends in august and we were looking to book flights.
Return flight to Nairobi is lot cheaper than kili. Can anyone please suggest decent transport options from Nairobi to moshi?
Thank you in advance

Hi there, my friend and I are doing Kili solstice summit next year and I have a practical question about clothing. Would a parka be practical to wear higher up the climb? I seem to only see climbers wearing short jackets. I live in the Nordics and always use this length in the wintertime to warm my bum too ☺️ Appreciate your advice, thank you! Brgds, Ami

Hello there, I hope this message finds you well. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that works well with the right organizer, such as Serengeti Mamba Adventure. We trekked with this company and we all made it to the top. Proper clothing is an important factor in successfully summiting Kilimanjaro, and answers to what to bring can be found when trekking with Serengeti Mamba Adventure. They will send you a complete climbing gear list, the best time to climb, the best crew, excellent and adequate food, and the best root. Thank you for your excellent question, and I hope I can assist you.

Hi people, myself & a few friends are planning Kilimanjaro early 2021. We’re all of decent fitness. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or advice on the best route to take? We expect 7/8 days on the mountain. I’m doing my own research however a lot of the information on the best route is very conflicting depending on the tour operators. Thanks in advance guys x

Hello, Emabeck.
I think by "best" route, most climbers refer to the route by which they are most likely to summit, but which will also allow them to experience as much as possible of the beauty of Kilimanjaro.
With this in mind, we would suggest that you scrutinise recommendations for Machame, Umbwe, and the standard Lemosho Routes very carefully indeed, as while Machame and standard Lemosho have very good acclimatisation if timings and movements are configured optimally by your operator, nonetheless, they all suffer from the same pitfall which can significantly impact your summit chances.
The issue is that after all three of these routes converge at Barranco, they follow a course that requires traversing three spurs and tributaries in succession, to the east of The Breakfast Wall. The highly undesirable consequence of this is that the trekker is therefore required to waste some 401 metres of hard-earned vertical height gain on the day immediately preceding what for many people will be the hardest day of their lives.
Having organised a number of world record attempts on which candidates are always seeking to push the boundaries with respect to what can be achieved at high altitude, and having overseen more than 10,000 successful summits on Kilimanjaro what has become very, very clear is that success at high altitude is a matter of balancing what are effectively two opposing variables:
Variable A. On the one hand, climbers need to input the additional effort required to ensure that they acclimatise adequately. This usually entails evening excursions to a higher altitude than where one sleeps at night, and of course necessitates a little extra calorific expenditure. However…
Variable B. On the other hand, prolonged exposure to high altitude has a physiologically deleterious effect, meaning that when we remain at above 3,000 metres for several days, the body doesn’t adequately recover from expended effort and suffers from accumulated fatigue that can only be relieved by descent to much lower altitude.
Our criticism of Machame, for instance, and the reason that fewer than 5% of the expeditions that I organise use that route, (whereas some 38.5% of trekkers across the board use Machame) is that while Machame (and standard Lemosho and Umbwe for that matter) satisfy the criterion of Variable A, the route performs appallingly with respect to Variable B, and climbers typically arrive into high camp (Barafu) with substantially depleted physical reserves available to be expended on the arduous summit bid.
To counter this failing, we recommend two alternative routes, “TK Lemosho” and “TK Rongai”. You can find these routes on Google Maps by search for “T K Lemosho Trail” and “T K Rongai Trail”.
In a nutshell, TK Lemosho begins with standard Lemosho from the gate to Shira I, but then instead of continuing to Shira I, it diverts to Moir Camp, above which you are able to exploit the topography of the Lent Group of outcrops that afford around 300 metres of climb-high sleep-low differential, which is an excellent balance between on the one hand expending a little extra effort to achieve adequate acclimatisation, while on the other not over-exerting oneself to the detriment of maintaining those precious physical reserves required for the summit assault.
Beyond Moir, we use what is also known as the “Northern Circuit” to attain 3rd Cave Camp. The route to 3rd Caves from Moir is superb in terms of maintaining balance between the aforementioned variables, in the sense that there is virtually no wasted height gain, the body is able to adapt well to 4,000 metres over a 17km stretch of extremely mild topographical undulations - and all at an altitude slightly lower than was already visited on Day 4’s evening acclimatisation excursion!
What absolutely consolidates TK Lemosho as the ultimate route in terms of acclimatisation, maintenance of reserves, and crowd avoidance is the final pertinent fact of the assault being launched from School Hut, as opposed to Kibo or Barafu.
The issues with launching the summit bid from Kibo Hut or Barafu Camp are twofold:
1. The going is relatively inefficient from Barafu and extremely inefficient from Kibo Huts, with significant traction being lost in each stride while ascending, further depleting summit reserves.
2. Crowding on these assault routes makes it difficult to maintain an efficient cadence. On the summit bid it is impossible for most climbers to maintain continual vertical progress with regular stops being necessitated to allow the heart rate to remain within an acceptable range - bearing in mind that at around 5,000 metres we have only around 60% of the oxygen in each breath that we are used to at sea level. When on a narrow, crowded trail, it therefore becomes a stressful and enervating exercise in diplomacy when having constantly to stand aside while resting for other climbers on the move, and vice versa.
Conversely, assaulting from School Hut means that we a) bypass the loose scree above Kibo and - to a lesser extent - Barafu, by making use of a firm, diagonal slope with excellent going, until we reach Hand Meyer Cave, from where the ground is thereafter firm, and b) avoid all crowding, as from Hans Meyer Cave the initially dense distribution of groups now becomes spaced far apart.
I realise I’ve only briefly touched on the subject, but please feel free to enquire further and I’ll be very happy to elaborate on my recommendation.
And by the way, while TK Lemosho has the best summit prospects in my view, the descent (via Mweka) is not suitable for those carrying old knee and ankle injuries. For those with such injuries we recommend TK Rongai, which diverges very radically from standard Rongai and enjoys many of the benefits of TK Lemosho, though sadly not a beautifully dense, populous rain forest section as TK Lemosho does.

Hi Chetan,
Hoping it is possible to do Kilimanjaro and safari for 13 - 14 days.
At the end of February me and my friend finished a 6 day trek via machame route and 2 day Amazing safari. But, when we were at the hotel we found a group of 5 people from Canada who did the 8 day lemosho route and 4 day safari with the same company we used (Mgalaa Expeditions) for 13 days because they flew on the same day they came from the safari. Therefore, it is possible.
Check with Edgar at Mgalaa Expeditions, they are very professional company to deal with.
Cheers,Nova.

Hi Sian,
We did 7 day machame route this January and I would highly recommend Jiwe adventures; They organized our climb and provided excellent service and was very flexible with special requests. Our guides, Jackson and Mohamed, were attentive, friendly, shared stories of their life and taught us songs in Swahili. I realized that by day 3, listening to the guides is extremely important: eat when they say to eat, drink when they tell you to drink and generally listen to their advice on clothing, walking pace, sleep, etc. After 7 days with our guides, chef, porters and other members of our tour, we did feel like family.
Cheers!!

Did you shower in the 8 days? How many clothes you bring? How to pack so it is not too heavy?
Anything that's a must? we'll be trekking with the same AWC company this July. I want to be properly equipped but I don't want to buy something I will only use once. Trekking pole, I will rent from the company. Would you recommend bringing your own sleeping bag or extra mat for comfort?
Written 6 January 2020
No showers but we had hot water in small containers to wash. In the Intrepid Travel website there is a list of clothes. I brought very minimum clothes and invested in thermals. You layer clothes. I only brought 2 shirts and 2 pants. But fresh underwear everyday ! Headlights is very important. Good worn in trek boots. One tip id to have a full set of clothing back in the hotel so you have a fresh set to wear after a long hot shower. Also bring a large seal plastic bag to put your undies and socks to keep them dry. There is a store to hire stuff so you may think of hiring instead of use clothing once. BUT it is important to get something to be warm. You will not enjoy it if you get wet or cold. Btw my shirts were light bushwalking shirts and hiking pants. So they were very light and rolled up. Quick to dry. No jeans. I did not bring own sleeping bag or extra mat. So tired each day that I crashed. But I saw a guide bring their own inflatable mattress!
