Wonderful Trip
Jul. 2021
We took the ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam. Although the ferry left a few minutes late, it was a great trip. We went royal class which I highly recommend. You get a very large seat in a quiet area. Tie your hat down well if you go out on the top deck. It's incredibly windy.

Avoid VIATOR TRAVEL like the plague.
May 2021
The coastal ferry was fine but if you happen to come across an online booking site called VIATOR TRAVEL avoid it like the plague.

They work with fly by night travel agents/coordinators and we lost $200 on ferry tickets...we bought the tickets online from VIATOR TRAVEL And were never issued the tickets. We had to buy tickets AGAIN at the ferry terminal.

Azam ferry is the worst. Awful customer care, they lost my parcel and no reasonable explanation was provided.

SCAM ALERT
Jan. 2021
I decided to take a solo day trip from Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar using Azam Ferries.

Upon reaching the location where the ticket offices are situated, a number of guys trying to solicit their companies followed me I am sure they receive some commission for finding customers. I was ushered to the Azam offices where a man called Balak showed me the available tours in Zanzibar assuring me that they organise and I settled on 2. I asked the cost of each, which he kept brushing off. They asked me how I would be paying and decided to use my bank card instead of cash.
This man then wrote down 3 numbers on paper that indicated the cost of the tour and ferry trip depending on which class I wanted to go onto VIP/Business/Economy. I chose the lowest one - but kept asking what the actual rates were - but he alwasy gave half answers. He assured me that the cost was all-inclusive of the ferry costs and tours
A quote was handwritten to me and I was asked to pay for the amount before the boarding pass was issued. Which I did.
I realise now that, everyone in that office was "in" on it. I was overcharged for tours, my boarding pass for the ferry was printed indicating a price of 30 dollars, yet I was charged much more. The exchange rate used between dollars and shiliing was not at all market related. I was not issued with a TRA invoice/receipt.

This experience was sickening to say the least and I am sure I am not the first victim to be taken advantage of. Insist on seeing the costs of tours. Request a TRA receipt as this indicates a legitimate transaction.
They are scammers working very hard to get your hard earned cash by any means necessary.

Awful customer service!
Jan. 2021 • Solo
This is an awful service where their staff do not know how to treat their customers. Ismail who is supposed to be greeting people at the door is rather arrogant and unhelpful.
Not a good experience eventhough I paid for a VIP seat there the seats were full as an economy class passenger had been occupying a seat that was meant for VIP.

Navigating the Ferry crowd
Aug. 2020
Very efficient, well run operation to get from DAR to Zanzibar in less than 2 hours. Economy was $35 US and cash and cards were accepted at the window - great view of the ocean but we upgraded to VIP for the ride back and it was much more comfortable, and pricey for foreigners. The tip for luggage handlers (guys wearing vests) was 40,000TZs ($16) to get all of our bags through the travelers, hawkers and security. Reserve online the day before, try to get the 9:30a or 12noon slots and go ONLY to the Azam building to pick up your tickets. The dock guys will try hard to compete for your tip but say a firm, polite no and look for a handler if you need help. Very good service.

Great Service
Jul. 2019
Fast and reliable shuttle service between mainland and the spice island. Ferries are clean and well kept, especially the VIP sections. Ride back from Zanzibar was a little choppy. Not ideal if you just ate.

Most of the time when I travel from Zanzibar to Dar es salaam or Dar es salaam to Zanzibar I use Azam marine boats which is of great quality and outstanding customer Service' today I board on Azam from Dar es salaam' one of the important thing I noticed at the entrance every travelers had to wash there hands with ranning water and soap also were given Surgical masks to wear which is very important in this time of Covid -19 (SARS-2) pandemic' we also walk along a tunnel with spray antiseptic' THIS IS OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE Which I can say Azam marine has got into a next level of customer care.

Clear and Easy to Use
Jan. 2020
I decided to make a day trip to Zanzibar from Dar and then return the same day. I went to the ferry and bought a roundtrip ticket for the same day with a departure at 7am, and a return from Zanzibar at 4. The total trip cost me around $60 in economy plus. The ride itself was fine with no problems, and it is nice being able to travel with a lot of the locals.

Overall, a very easy day trip with very little hassle from porters (I didn't have any luggage with me though).
