We took a drive around the walls in the early evening when there was less traffic. The amazing thing is how long they have lasted and the length of the walls. I know that there is constant repair work going on all the time. The walls in some parts are much better than in others. Try it yourself it will... More

The walls are an impressive feature of Marrakech. There is a lot of history surrounding them and it's really nice to get one of the horse drawn carriages around the outside

Ancient history, I read a bit about them before going, which made them more interesting when we got there. Good as a fleeting glimpse!

The walls were later extended. Even nowadays the old city wall encircles the whole medina and is about 10 miles long.

Just arrived in Jemaa el Fna Square, we bought a ride on a calash ("calèche" in French) to get our first idea about what Marrakech was like. It was a very funny experience which brought us to the main ramparts of the city wall. Particularly pay attention to the main door, on whose two pillars beautiful storks put their nests.

Marrakech and the very special color of its walls is so chic and authentic. Walking around the wall was quite interesting.

There are 19 gates into the medina, Bab Agnou gate was built in the 12th century and is worth looking at. You can view the ramparts and gates on foot or hop in to 1 of the 200 horse drawn carriages ( caleches ) within the old town.

Very different part of the city, because it is the Royal palace there are long boulevards with lots of security, like the roads around Buckingham palace, be warned don't photograph the any gate with guards in front you will be approached or you might find security driving up to you from a distance and question you.
