Get to the mosque early on a Friday. The prayers are a relaxing way to pass the afternoon away. Followed any a lazy stroll at nearby square for some snacks

In the heart of Marrakesh, the mosque is a must. If you can only make one day then Friday prayers is a must. The acoustics of the call to prayer vertebrate within.

In Paris, you can visit la Tour Effeil among others. In London, you can enjoy Big Ben in particular, etc, etc.
In Marrakech, there is the Koutoubia, over 900 years old.
The Koutoubia, mosque and its minaret, is a religious building built in the 12th century by the Almohads. As amazing by day than by night (nicely lighted), it's our lighthouse in Marrakech.
I've been living here for almost 7 years and I still admirate it each time I drive or walk nearby. Our pride here in Marrakech. Among so many treasures ...

Greetings All..

I've visited Koutoubia Mosque once before but my second visit was extra special as I had the honour of going up inside the square minaret, all the way to the top.

I was out of breath however it was sooo worth it once I reached the top as the views of Marrakech were amazing.

The mosque itself is a huge structure and the outer brickwork is very impressive. The dim lighting inside and the vast area and pillars and lights and architecture and a separate courtyard all make this mosque beautiful and it should most definitely be on one's list of places to visit.

This beautiful rose coloured mosque was originally built in the Almoravid times but was demolished and rebuilt in the 12th century because it was not facing Mecca correctly. The name of the mosque Koutoubia hails from the Arabic word for bookseller. This is because during the Almohad times booksellers used to trade their wares at the foot of this mosque. The mosque has elegant decorations, arches and curved windows, grand ceramic inlays and a special minbar or pulpit. But the highlight of the mosque is it’s 253 feet high minaret. It’s design, which consists of spheres and spires, has inspired famous buildings like the Giralda of Seville and Hassan Tower of Rabat. No building in the surrounding area is allowed to be built higher than this minaret. The mosque is surrounded by well maintained gardens and fountains. The Muslims can visit it during the prayer times while the non Muslims are not allowed to enter it.

We visited and had a walk around the mosque area. The building dates to around the 12th century and its minaret is quite tall at about 80 or so metres high. The minaret was built by Spanish captives! The mosque is quite lovely and obviously has a lot of history behind it. Its history is literally all around it.
