The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Check the weather before going. The views are spectacular on a clear day, but the wind can be very strong and make viewing difficult.

The Pali Lookout provides amazing views of the windward side of Oahu. That is the less congested part of Oahu although the development appears to be coming. Taking the Pali Highway from Honolulu to the windward side saves driving around the traffic-congested North and South Shores. The North Shore drive is worse. The South Shore drive provides beautiful, dramatic views... More

It's worth a stop as you're driving the Pali. You can see the Windward side of the island (Kaneohe and Kailua) very well.

Very unusual not windy like it normally is, when you pay for parking pass the ticket on the next person that comes that part is a rip off, but views are phenomenal

We have friends who live on Oahu and were driving us around the island. They took us to this beautiful overlook. It was something! First of all, be prepared for the wind! We were told it was not as windy as usual, so I can only imagine how it gets when the winds are at full force! The winds did... More

What a great view from this lookout. We were on a round Oahu island bus trip and called in here. It was a clear, still day and the view was spectacular. There were chickens everywhere - as usual out of the cities in Hawaii. Well worth the drive.

This is a must see. It costs $3 to park but you can stay as long as you would like. One of the best views on Oahu!
