Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The path to Pele's chair comes right off the path to Makapuu lighthouse. You go down into a trail within the grass and follow it all the way to a beach clearing. There were only a couple other people there so it's a pretty nice beach if you wanna get away from crowded areas. If you walk into the ocean, it gets rocky so wear some water shoes. To the left you can get to Pele's chair. There is a 5ft long log that sticks out of the rocks where you can jump in the water.

Since my wife and I were there for snorkeling, we opted to jump climb down the rocks close to where you'd jump in. There is a sandy bottom section and as you swim further out, you can see the rocks and coral. The coral here is beautiful with green and purple hues that I frankly didn't see while I was in Hanauma Bay (see my post). You can see a variety of different fish just like Hanauma Bay but not in the same volume. The inlet is protected by a line of rocks which makes for very calm waters while snorkeling. It's a wonderful spot that not many people know which is pretty nice.

Pele's chair is a rock formation on the coast that looks like a huge chair from certain angles. Most of the hike is flat and in the open (bring a hat, sunscreen, and water), but the last bit is a bit of a scramble over rocks up to Pele's Chair. Once there, you find beautiful views of the ocean and coast. You can even see the water spout out of the Halona Blow Hole.

The trail is in POOR condition from the parking at Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trailhead to the area noted to view the 'chair'. People were abandoning their strollers and just carrying children as the rock trail was strewn with fist size rocks that made them virtually unusable. You pent the entire time watching your step on 50% of the trsil so as not to break an ankle. NOTE: if you take the well maintained/paved trail to the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse you can see the chair from a distance, which frankly is enough in my mind. Parking is....well....horrible! Come early to avoid the heat and get kinda close.

It is an easy hike, mostly flat. Not many people there either so you do not have to wait that long to get to the 'chair'.

Pele’s Chair is a rock that harkens back to Hawaiian lore. The hike to the rock can be done while visiting Makapu’u Point, which gives you more bang for your free parking.

We're intrigued by ancient Hawaiian sites and read about Pele's Chair.
Pele was the Goddess of the volcano and Hawaiian legends are rich with references to her. As you drive toward Diamond Head from the Windward shore, look to your left, you'll see Pele's Chair - a large rock formation that looks like a chair. If you reach the entrance to the golf course, you've missed it. We pulled off (probably not the safest place to do so) and shot a telephoto shot.

Love swimming at Pele's Chair in the mornings. The water is crystal clear and it's best before the tide comes in. Bring reefwalkers and snorkels for best experience. Leave valuables in car. Place belongings on a rock high enough so when tide comes in you don't lose them. Best to jump in unless you have reefwalkers. The Hawaiian Reef fish are beautiful to see. Don't go alone here if you are not a good swimmer or familiar with Hawaiian waters.
