I loved Waikiki Beach in general but strolling along Kalalaua Avenue didn't add a lot to the experience. I was expecting a livelier and more vibrant scene, but it was rather tame and sleepy. We only walked the portion from the Royal Hawaiian Center to the Moana Surfrider Hotel so maybe we missed the good part.

We liked our hotel (Outrigger Beach Resort) a lot, and we enjoyed the wide variety of shopping and restaurants. BUT, we fell for a slick sales pitch at Oceane. We feel we were misled by a salesman there who did not inform us at all that there could not be any refund if we changed our minds about the purchase. Subsequently, we discovered this is common practice with this store and its affiliates. We learned this on the Better Business Bureau’s website. BEWARE of OCEANE and TRÉSOR RARE in Honolulu and anywhere else they operate.

This is the main shopping street in Honolulu, directly opposite the main part of Waikiki Beach. There are arcades, malls, specialty shops, outlet stores, and all the high end designer label stores. You can't come to Honolulu without having a look at Kalakaua Ave.

If you think of a designer brand then they probably have a store on or in a mall just off Kalakaua Ave. It's not until you get down to the Moana Surfrider do you manage to get to sea the beach, ocean and the impressive Diamond Head. If your love is shopping you could spend hours, days even weeks and not get to all the stores. If you like tranquillity and scenic views. Stay as far away as you can. Road crossing timers, Jay walking patrols. Homeless people, street traders all add to the intensity. Best walking in my opinion is from the Moana Surfrider towards Diamond Head in the evening.

It’s been over 2 and a half years since I was in Waikiki and coming back now the amount of homeless people has drastically increased. All along the foreshore in the seated shelters are filled with the homeless and in bus shelters and on street corners. The smell of urinate is overpowering and from time to time, council workers will come and hose the area down while attempting to clean it. Many have obvious mental health issues talking to themselves or shouting at empty space, others can be intimidating.
One guy tried to sell me a surf board and when I refused berated an older couple from Austria for several minutes waiting at at crossing. “Just give me $5 man” he kept repeating.
This has spoiled the vibe of Waikiki for me to the point I probably won’t return.

This is the main strip that runs through Waikiki. This is where everything happens. All the restaurants whether they are chain or local are located here kind of shopping with local in name brand stores. This is where you can catch all the information on tours and all the other stuff that goes on around the island as well. The great place with a lot of high-energy a lot of bars and stuff that are open at night and nice crowds of tourist.

Located at 2250 Kalakaua Ave #103 tourists must beware. The owner over charged us for an item...it was just dumb luck we say the same item wirh a much lower sticker price as we were on the the way out the store.

If you are staying on Waikiki you will eventually end up on Kalākaua. Walk it and you will become familiar with shopping and dining options. I prefer Kuhio st one block over.

Kalakaua Ave was disappointing at best, especially as you get closer to Waikiki Beach, because any semblance of Hawaiian culture or uniqueness gets wiped out by the same national brand stores that you can find in any other upscale-mall in any other city in the United States. I also find it incredibly ironic since the street is bookended by Hawaii's "largest" outdoor mall on the northland and the International Marketplace (think a number of former independent shopkeepers/souvenir carts who got replaced by a mall) on the southend. Don't get me wrong, the street and walk look nice, but you could drop it down anywhere else and wouldn't know the difference.

I'm not a big shopper, but this was a pretty good place to walk. The sidewalks were only moderately crowded, and there were some nice cafes and restaurants along the way.

We always stay at Hilton Hawaiian Village which is about half a mile north of the shopping area. There's lots of good hotels right alongside the main shopping area too, depending on how much you want to spend, such as Sheraton and Halekulani; and there's also another Hilton that's one block back from the beach.

Am staying at a hotel on Kalakaua avenue and have one day to find a few souvenirs to bring home. I am otherwise busy from start to finish, but wonder if (a) is there a Walmart close by to pick up a few last minute things and (b) any recommendations for restaurants, or is there a grocery store that might keep my budget in check.
