About
This natural wonder on the island of Oahu was formed due to past volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Halona Blowhole now occasionally shoots seawater up to 30 feet in the air because of waves coursing through the underwater lava tubes. The viewing point provides a breathtaking view of Halona Cove, a beautiful beach that has been featured in many movies and music videos. If you visit during winter, you may be lucky enough to witness whales in the nearby waters.
You might also want to take a tour to nearby attractions like Hanauma Bay and Koko Crater for an all-rounded experience. – Tripadvisor

- GAN LKuala Lumpur, Malaysia10,656 contributionsGreat sceneryThe blowhole is most active when the tide is high and the winds are strong. Unfortunately when we were there, these conditions were absent and we could not see any waves being caused to shoot high up. Nevertheless, the scenery in the surrounding areas is gorgeous. Many cars stopped here to view the beautiful sceneryVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2023
- Maya L2 contributionsGreat spot!Great stop to cliff jump and swim! We loved this beach as it had great views. Me and my boyfriend also cliffed jumped off the left side. Be careful the current was strong so I would not recommend if you are not a strong swimmer. This is the first place we saw turtles and it was amazing!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 January 2024
- Lisa JPlant City, Florida960 contributionsHalona BlowholeIts a beautiful overlook with plenty of parking. It is paved and wheelchair accessible, with railing for safety. The blow hole is not consistent because of the winds and tides so you have to watch for it. Great views of the coastline even if you do not get to see the blowhole.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2024

We stopped at this popular site and luckily found available parking. It was still crowded in the early afternoon, despite the cloudy weather drizzle. The blow hole varies, depending on tides and surf conditions. Meh, it was way more active on a previous visit. The improved viewing area is large, with a colorful storyboard. Steps and a ramp to the notch for the closest viewing, also has ample railings for safety. Adjacent is “eternity beach” made famous by the 1953 movie. Actually, known as Halona Beach Cove, it has some cool lava tube features. But we passed on the steep trail down. Worth a stop if you can find parking.

Small parking lot. At low tide the blowhole is inactive. It may send up a small spray but little else. It is such a beautiful spot that it is worth a stop no matter what the water level is.

The blowhole itself is not big deal. However if you are on the SE coast (we were on our way to Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail - recommend), definitely pull into the scenic overlook parking lot. The beach down on the right looked like a great place to climb down and explore (reviews for it are under Eternity Beach).

There were a lot of people in the parking lot and at the edge of the overlook but the blowhole activity was off and on. The surf wasn't running hard so there was minimal surges while we were there. Better one at Poipu on Kauai or in Maui near Wailua. After we left and were at a overlook that had a view of the blowhole I did get a shot of the blast.

On a good day you can see the blowhole within a minute. I’m sure if you wAit a while you can see it go very high.
Go to far E side of the parking lot for the best for view. Several people were walking down to the beach below or even down the blowhole. While not permitted, it looked fairly easy to do. Still be careful in days where tide could come up and soak you or worse. Worth the stop but doesn’t have to be long if you have other things to do.

We stopped at the blowhole when it was high tide so we were able to see several jets of water and mist coming out of it. It is a quick stop, but well worth it. The parking lot is decent size and cars are always coming and going, so parking is not usually an issue. The view is amazing and it is relaxing to watch the waves as they come into the shore. The beach below the blowhole looks nice as well, but we did not venture down there.

When we got here, the tide was only starting to turn from low tide to high tide, and therefore the blow hole was weak, as if someone was only smoking. When we left and went to Sandy Beach, we could see the blow hole all the way from there, and this time much stronger. What a difference a few hours make. On the left side, we can see the blowhole. On the right side, there is a makeshift wave pool. We didn't go down to this beach and the makeshift wave pool, although there were a lot of people enjoying it. The access to the blowhole is also via this beach.
Parking is very sufficient, and if full, the wait is not that long.

It was cool to see even though it was unusually tame the day we were there, so I think it would be spectacular on a good day. However, when we tried to check back later in the day, the parking lot was full with 3 cars ahead of us waiting for a space, so we gave up. Might have been worth it to wait for a space, but we were tired after a long day.

Is the beach accessed by the tunnel in these photos by the Halona Blow Hole? Same parking access?
Written 31 January 2020
That's a good question. If you mean the lava tube, I don't know where to access that tunnel other than from the beach cove. I don't recall seeing any signs for a tunnel entry point, nor for any parking access. I think the only parking would be the lot for the blowhole lookout.

When taking the trolley, how long do I have to stay there before it picks me up again?
Written 26 June 2019
You should be able to get on the next one coming, maybe 5 minutes tops. We walked up and down. Very steep, but paved road, good exercise.

Where can you park at so you can enjoy the hike and go to the beach?
Written 1 February 2016
You park at the lookout to get down to Eternity Beach.
