Great, but Go Slowly and Carefully!

This is a great alternative to driving through the central valley if you're heading back to the West side, but allow plenty of time and be prepared for some white-knuckle moments... read more

We started our morning off great, we loaded up the rental car and drove around the right side of the island on Hwy 30 (4 lane) and it was beautiful. Taking our time seeing the sites we continued over to a great beach at Kekaa Point. My family (wire and little boy) played in the water, picnic, relaxed had a... More

First time the wife and I visit Maui and we happen to have a rental car for daytime road trips. I told her that we should try to drive the coast of the island - I suggested this with absolutely no research and after the fact that Alamo pointed to two different points on the map that I should not... If you try to drive this road headed towards Lahaina, you will be on the ocean side lane of the road. If you drive this road headed away from Lahaina, you will be on the mountain side of the road. You don't want to be on the ocean side, its a long way down, there are no guardrails, you may... More

I personally thought this drive was better than the road to Hana. The views were spectacular! However, you definitely want a full tank of gas and you don't want to drive this at night. This road scared me a lot more than the Road to Hana...I was more concerned with rocks falling than going over the edge as we were... More

If you are leary of driving on narrow 1 lane roads, with turnouts, have someone else drive on this stretch. For those who have lived in the PNW and driven logging roads in the mountains, this drive is like that, but only paved. This road is less traveled than the well-known Hana Highway, but what it lacks in notoriety, it... More

This is a great alternative to driving through the central valley if you're heading back to the West side, but allow plenty of time and be prepared for some white-knuckle moments. The road is windy and single-lane in many places, so take it easy and sound your horn before blind corners. You may need to back up, and there are... More

Took my grandma and mother along for the ride and they were absolutely terrified and continuously voiced their fears. I was fine, but maybe that's because I was driving and in control. Beautiful scenery, just wish there were more turn off points to be able to enjoy it... I definitely regret not using a dash mount to video the drive.... More

After a trip to Haleakala my husband thought this would be a fun drive to take on the way back to our hotel. We were thinking that it would have nice views and some beaches to stop at (obviously we had never been here before). This WAS an amazing drive - wonderful views, great little stop offs to enjoy the... More

I thought it would be fun to go the other way back from Lahaina to Wailea on the Honoapiilani Highway so that we can see other parts of the the island. Scenic views were awesome and lots of places to pullover and just enjoy the scenery. All long the Kahekili Highway is basically a cliffside with a few scenic spots... More

Using a rental car is not advisable by the rental company, but we recommend a subaru or something along those lines. The bigger vehicles with a soft suspension is not recommended for this trip. Narrow roads and fun stops along the way. Get the world famous Julia's banana bread!
