Well worth the short detour to see this, especially coming from country with massive white beaches. Great spot, great bay, enjoyed it and the sand really is black.

We spotted several turtles in the water close to the rocks we were standing on, then one of the large turtles swam right in to the tide pool next to us and started feeding in the shallows for at least 30-40mins (all the other beach...More

We visited this beach because we heard that sea turtles are often seen here and we were very lucky: twelve turtles! It was also quite busy but the turtles did not seem to mind, the area they were resting had been marked with stones so...More

We stumbled upon this gem as we made our way from the Hilo side of Hawaii from the Volcano National Park to the Kona side where we were staying. The main beach area seemed small; but, stunning. I mean really stunning. The sand is quite...More

This is a very small but beautiful beach and the sand is truly black. The contrast with the water and vegetation was beautiful, but don't trip because it is formed from volcanic glass shards and even a slight impact will cut through your skin. As...More

What a great place to visit. The sand was a bit hot but we saw turtles in the water and on the beach. It was a great drive down the coast to the beach and we stopped at the Shaka Restaurant for lunch. Very nice.

It's a strange experience seeing black sand, but this beach is lovely. We walked along the rocky area and looked in the tide pools. There were lots of crabs and fish to see. We also enjoyed watching the turtles swimming in the surf. This would...More

We went swimming for sure. It definitely is a little rough though so not great for real little ones or for those that are not good swimmers. Both of my children, 13 and 11, had no problem but they're both very good... More

We were there mid day and saw 2 large turtles resting right on shore for awhile and we saw quite a few turtles swimming very close to the shallow shore. I think people would be able to see turtles morning or afternoon.
