Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very impressive house of worship. The stained glass is fantastic. Worthwhile to visit, even if not going for services.

Visit the Basilica of the Virgin of Suyapa in the daytime. Every Latin American country has a place of pilgrimage, usually in honor of the Virgin Mary that appeared there. Honduras is no exception.

The small village of Suyapa used to be outside of Tegucigalpa. Now it feels like an extension of the capital. On your way, you will pass the National Autonomous University of Honduras.

A replica of the tiny Virgin of Suyapa is displayed in a beautiful crystal case. After you see her, look at the restored Basilica and its paintings. You may wish to light a candle in the special area set aside for that purpose. Also, the view from the Basilica towards Tegucigalpa is lovely.

Then, go to the old church just down the road a bit and behind the Basilica to see the actual, tiny Virgin of Suyapa. She is usually there. This church is much smaller and darker. Let your eyes adjust to the light to appreciate it. Both the Basilica and the small church, originally erected in honor of the Virgin of Suyapa, inspire prayer and/or quiet contemplation.

There is a status or Archangel Michael in front of the Basilica. The Basilica is also visible from Cristo del Picacho. During my visit, I was surprised how sparsely populated, peaceful and tranquil it was.

Had a nice visit. This basilica was constructed about 20yrs ago. It is probably the most beautiful church in the city. That being said, if you have visited Catholic cathedrals elsewhere (for instance) Europe, this will be somewhat underwhelming for you. If you're in the area it is worth a visit; however, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit.

Every Ash Wednesday, I go to the Basilica of our Lady of Suyapa for mass. This is one of the most impressive churches in Tegucigalpa. The statuette of the Virgin of Suyapa is housed there. There is also a replica of "La Pieta" by Michelangelo. I also went there for a workshop on the Shroud of Turin, in August. It's an amazing church.

It seems to me that they are missing the truth when they say that the entire country celebrates the encounter of the Virgin of Suapa when in reality it is only the Catholic followers. In Honduras there is a high percentage of non-Catholic Christian followers who are not interested in this event.
